The castle Hrádek, also known as Bělčice, is a extinct medieval fortress near the village Bělčice in Strakonice district. Established in the 14th century as the seat of the local nobility, today represents a significant part of its preserved fortress with walls and moats, protected as a cultural monument.

Bašek z Bělčic (1316-1360) is considered a builder. Although historical sources suggest the existence of a seat as early as the 13th century, as nobles with a home from Belčice have been mentioned since 1242.

The original building design of the fortress comes from the Middle Ages. This building preserved mainly a fortress surrounded by double walls and moats. In the 19th century they were damaged, when the remains of the masonry were dismantled.

The fortress passed through a number of owners: after Baska it was owned by Markéta ze Šternberka (until 1375), followed by brothers Zbyněk a Bohuněk z Lochovic (1389-1405), Markvart z Těchařovic (1412) and brothers Petr, Přech a Jan z Konratic (1418). Before 1422 it was purchased by Jiřík Běšín z Běšin, whose family he owned until October 1623. It was then sold by Smil of Běšin to Jaroslav Volf of Sternberg and followed by Maxmiliana Veronika ze Švihova. In 1663, Johanka, the daughter of previous owners, bought it for Ales Ferdinand Vratislav of Mitrovic, whose estate was later seized for debts. In 1675, Count Humprecht Jan Černín bought the fort.

The key moment for the fate of the construction was 1692 when it burned down and was not restored. In addition, the fortress was damaged in the 1970s due to the operation of off-road motorcycles. In 2005, the wall was towed by a bulldozer, which also damaged the bottom of the ditch.

Today, the site is represented by its topographical form of valleys and ditches on the southwest side of Chicken Mountain. This cultural monument documents the medieval settlement of the area. Visiting offers insight into the history of noble settlements and is an interesting goal for those interested in traces of medieval architecture in the landscape.

Welcome to the historical heart of Bělčice. You're standing in a place that may not be monumental at first glance, but if you stop and listen to the silence of this space, you start to feel the presence of centuries. Before you, there is a fortress that is no longer the seat of living people, but rather a monumental monument to what had already died. Notice the shape of the earth under your feet and around you. What you see is not just random hills or a deeper landscape, but remains of former power. These moats and ditches, which now form a unique trail in the field, are the last to witness the existence of the medieval fortress of Hrádek. Even if you no longer see the high walls or the fixed gates here today, the atmosphere of this place can still consume you.

Let's go back deep into the past together to understand why this place is so important. Although the actual construction of the fortress, which we see today as a medieval whole, dates back to the 14th century, the roots of the noble families associated with this region go much further. Already in 1242, the first mention of the nobles of Belčice appears in the historical records, which suggests that there was already a significant residence here, which laid the foundations for the future fortress. In the fourteenth century, the castle of Hrádek was definitively established as a fixed seat of local nobility. It was not just an ordinary building, but a strategic point that controlled the surroundings and served as a symbol of status and security for its inhabitants.

Now pay attention to what's right in front of you. Since the fort no longer exists as a building, you must imagine it through its remains in the landscape. Look at these walls. Even though the earth and vegetation are now covered, their shape still tells us how the operation of this place has resisted in the past. The trenches surrounding the fortress once served as the first line of defense. Notice how the earth's lines wave and how deep these depths were. It is fascinating to realize that what we see today as part of the natural landscape was once carefully dug out and laid out by the human hand with a clear purpose of protection. Unfortunately, time and human behavior have left traces of these structures that are visible today. In the nineteenth century, these walls were damaged and the remains of the masonry were not stolen from to build their own buildings. This material loss was the first great loss from the original face of this place.

But when you look at this space, you can't see more than just ground and moat. You must see the people who lived here, made decisions and ruled. The history of this place is accompanied by the names of powerful personalities who left their mark. We can talk about the builder himself, which was Bašek z Bělčic, the man who gave this fort its initial form. For centuries, there were various nobles who took turns in the hands of the power. We can remember Margaret of Sternberg, the brothers Zbynek and Bohunek of Lochovice, or Markvarta of Těchařovice. Every name that has sounded here in history, like Petr, Přech a Jan z Konratic, Jiřík Běšín z Běšin, or Jaroslav Wolf ze Šternberka, represents a chapter in the history of this place. There were women like Maximiliana Veronica of Svihov, and powerful men like Aleš Ferdinand Vratislav z Mitrovic or Humprecht Jan Černín. Each of them perceived this fortress as his home, his fortress and his symbol.

But there is one moment that has changed everything and which is the key to understanding why you are looking at a ruin today, not a living castle. There was a tragedy in 1692 that changed this fort forever. A huge fire consumed buildings and destroyed what people have been building for centuries. After this devastating phenomenon, the fort was never restored. Instead of lifting up the walls again, there was only this fortress that became part of the country over time. This event is both fascinating and sad - it shows how fragile human creation can be before the forces of the element.

And if it seems to you that the history of this place ended in the seventeenth century, you are mistaken. The fortress has been through difficult times even in modern times. In the 1970s, this historic space was damaged by the operation of off-road motorcycles, which disrupted the peace and integrity of these monuments. It is a reminder of how, even in our time, we need to be careful not to discredit what is left of our past. Another blow came in 2005, when one of the wallows was towed by a bulldozer, which again left a visible mark in this fragile monument.

But there is also something mysterious. Although we know of many names and events, the question remains as to exactly what each room and every corridor that was once here looked like. What sounds were made through these corridors in the 14th century? What looks did the nobles of Belčice have when they looked from these places to the surroundings? This invisible history is part of every step you take here.

Now I want to invite you to continue your walk. Let the atmosphere of this place drift. Take a look at the walls from different angles, try to imagine in your mind how there were solid masonry walls that don't exist anymore. Feel this space as a living textbook of history, which is not read from books, but which is experienced directly in the field. This cultural monument is there for you to remind you of the continuity of time and the value of roots that were rooted here over 700 years ago. Thank you for choosing to visit this place and pay attention to his story. Prabrig takes another journey along the historical paths of this region.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring brings to Belčice the awakening of nature and fresh green, which gently covers the stone remains of the fortress. The atmosphere is full of hope and light is soft, which is ideal for observing details of ruins. We recommend moisture-resistant footwear, because the surrounding roads can be muddy after thawing. The best place to visit is in the morning when the air is the cleanest.

In the summer months, rich green trees and sharp sun-heated air dominate the memory. The contrast between hot day and cold in the shadow of old walls creates a unique feeling. Due to the high season and the high attendance, come early in the morning to enjoy the ruin in peace. Don't forget the hat, enough water and light, airy clothes.

Autumn paints the surroundings of Hrádek into golden and brown tones, underlining the melancholy character of this historic place. The frequent morning mist gives the ruins a mysterious and mystical form. At this time it is advisable to choose layered clothes and waterproof shoes. The ideal time for visiting is late afternoon, when the low sun will highlight the texture of the old stone beautifully.

Zimą acts strictly and minimistically in Belčice, especially if the walls are covered with a layer of snow or freeze. The landscape around it is quiet and only the basic outlines of the building are removed from it. It is necessary to wear warm clothes and a firm sole to prevent slipping. Due to the short days, plan to travel in the morning to use daylight.
