Jesuit College in Klatovy is a historical monument located at Denisova 148, in the city area Klatovy I. This building, together with the adjacent Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary and Saint Ignatius, forms a complex of Baroque buildings from the 17th century. Klatovy catacombs under the buildings of the tracks are a key attraction, where mummified remains of the Jesuit members are stored. Today, the building serves as the headquarters of the City Library of Klatovy and the City Office, with some of the premises available to the public.

The formation of the tracks is linked to the antireform in the Czech Republic of the 17th century, where the goal was to restore Catholic faith and establish institutions like these. In 1635 the lords of the nobility, Albrecht Chanovský z Dlouhé Vsi and his allies, turned to Emperor Ferdinand III to ask for the presence of Jesuits in Klatovy. Martin Stredonius, Jan Molitor and Jiří Aquitan were the first members of the Order who settled in the city on 11 March 1636. Jiří Adam Bořita z Martinic and his sister Lucie Otilie married to Count Oldřich František Libstejnský of Kolovrat provided significant support.

The architecture of the tracks is an example of baroque art that has evolved in two stages. The first stage in the early Baroque style was completed in 1671 under the direction of Giovanni Domenico Orsi. After the fire caused by the French in 1689, the Baroque style was restored between 1692 and 1703, affecting not only the building itself, but also the entire urban environment. Architects Carlo Lurago and Theodor Moretus played a key role in shaping this baroque character.

The ownership of the tracks has undergone several changes. From 1635 until the abolition of the order in 1773, the tracks were held by the Tovarysch of Jesus. After the abolition of the Jesuits, the object went under the administration of the army, where it served as a garnison for various military units until 1992. Since then, the campus has belonged to Klatovy.

Among the key events in the track history are their founding in 1636, the fire in 1689 and the subsequent restoration. In 1692-1693 a seminar was also built in the garden of the college. The order was abolished in 1773, leaving the tracks which subsequently served military purposes until the early 1990s.

Today the tracks are accessible to the public, especially through the Klatovy City Library and the City Office. The premises as a former monastery refectory were converted into a representative hall, allowing visitors to explore the historical significance and architecture of this building. Klatovy catacombs remain one of the most striking attractions that attract visitors.

The Jesuit college in Klatovy is an important monument that shows the rich history and cultural heritage of the city. Its architecture and historical context offer visitors an opportunity to explore the past within the modern urban environment. For those interested in history and architecture, a visit to this building is not only a learning experience, but also an opportunity to appreciate the important stages of Czech history.

Welcome to the historical monument in Klatovy, where you are now in front of the Jesuit cradle building, which tells the story of the past full of adventure and spiritual search. This complex of Baroque buildings opens its roofs and decorated facades, which are like a book with chapters full of historical events.

Let's dive into the past. In 1636, the Jesuits settled in Klatovy and started building this building for the following decade. In 1655 they laid the foundations for a new college, which was completed in the first phase already in 1671. This object was built to spread education and religious ideals of the order of Jesuits who sought to strengthen Catholic faith in Central Europe during the counter-reformation.

Look up at the facade and notice the elegant baroque style that is characteristic of the works of architects Carlo Luraga, Giovanni Domenico Orsi and Theodore Moretus. These artists left their mark in shaping and decorating the building, making it a unique example of baroque architecture.

There were important events in this building. There were significant personalities such as Bohuslav Balbín, Sebastian Labe and Albrecht Chanovský z Dlouhé Vsi. These figures contributed to the rich cultural and spiritual life of the college.

Now look at one of the most interesting mysteries associated with this monument. Under the buildings there are Klatovy catacombs where mummified remains of the Jesuit members are stored. These rooms welcome you through the silence and spirit of the past, offering a view of the lives and deaths of those who once studied and taught here.

I invite you to explore other parts of this historical complex. Take a look at the Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary and Saint Ignatius, which is part of the whole and offers more views into Baroque architecture.

Thank you for your visit to the Jesuit cradle in Klatovy. I hope this tour was fun and inspiring for you. May you enjoy another discovery of historical monuments!

Seasonal recommendations

Spring: In the spring period, the Klatovy college cave is fertilized by a new life, where flowering gardens and trees form an attractive background for visitors. Sun rays penetrating through the rail windows create moving patterns on the floor, which gives space to freshness and softness. It is advisable to visit the dorm during the day when the sun is above your head because evening cold can cause discomfort. The good idea is to wear clothes with the possibility of putting off layers to adjust to the variable temperature. Visitors should also be prepared for a slight increase in crowds, because spring is a popular time for trips and hiking.

Summer: In the summer months, the Klatovy college offers a cool comfort compared to the zeal of the outdoor environment. Comfortable interiors and shading spaces are ideal places to relax when it is unbearably hot outside. The sunlight enters the track under the curtains, creating mild and welcoming lighting. Visitors should be dressed in light, free clothes suitable for warm nature, with a buffer for cool air inside the building. In addition, it is recommended to visit the dorm in the early morning or late evening hours to avoid the hottest times of the day while enjoying the beautiful end of the day.

Autumn: In the autumn months, the Klatovy college offers a unique atmosphere where leaves on trees go into colours from gold to red. This painting is highlighted by a darker light that penetrates through the windows of the track and creates a romantic effect. Visitors should be dressed with a view to cooler temperatures, while wearing layered clothes for convenience. It is also an ideal time to visit the college in a quieter environment, as the crowds begin to decline with the end of the summer season. In addition, you can relax and look at the natural changes around the track, which creates a calm atmosphere.

Winter: During winter, the Klatovy hostel offers refuge from the freezing outdoor environment. The warm interior and the light that penetrates through the windows create a welcoming atmosphere. Visitors should be well dressed with warm clothes such as fur coats and blankets to protect themselves from the cold outside. Winter is also a time when fewer people attend the dorm, which allows a more peaceful tour. In addition, it can be fascinating to observe winter scenes around the track, such as covered by snow terrain or ice patterns on the windows, which adds an adventurous atmosphere of visitors.
