Lékárna U bílého jednorožce is a baroque monument in Klatovy in town square no. 149. The building has been protected as a cultural monument since 3 May 1958 and is now used as a museum exhibition.
The history of the building is linked to the Jesuit Order. In 1639 he replaced the Skřívánkovský house with the Střelkovský house in Klatov Square. In 1660 there was a Jesuit pharmacy. The competitive pharmacy at the White Eagle opened in 1674. The name U White unicorn began to be used in the Skřivánkovsky house since 1740. In 1766, a pharmacy near the White Eagle was connected.

The ownership of the pharmacy changed in 1773 as a result of the abolition of the Jesuit Order. The entire facility was purchased by Jan Michal Firbas. The pharmacy worked on the site until 1966. In later years, several renovations took place, namely restaurant furniture and equipment between November 2009 and April 2010.
Exposure includes a number of historical objects and technical equipment. There is a painting of the Virgin Mary Klatovskaya hanging above the door to the pharmacy. The premises are exposed to a narrow tooth over two metres long. The preparation room contains a three-stage oven for drying plants, which was placed in the pharmacy itself. There are tools on the worktables such as a lubricant mixer, hand-operated mallets, flasks, tin syringes and vending machines, together with period ceramics.
At present, the pharmacy is accessible as a museum exhibition from April to October, from Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 to 12:00 and from 13:00 to 17:00. Current information about changes in traffic can be found on the entrance door from the square.

Welcome to Klatovy, in the heart of this beautiful city, where right now you will stop in front of one of its most important treasures. You're standing in front of a building that tells stories of ancient times, faith and care for the health of the people in its form and history. Look at this beautiful building unit in front of you. The first thing you're interested in is his appearance, bearing marks of baroque style. It's a place that connects the practical purpose of the pharmacy to the artistic knowledge of the time. Feel the atmosphere of this square and imagine how people walked through here centuries ago looking for relief from their diseases in these very walls.
Now let's dive a little into the depths of time to understand how this place came to be. It all started in a thousand six hundred sixty. At that time, they founded the Jesuit pharmacy, which was an order that focused on education and spiritual guidance, but at the same time had deep knowledge of herbs and nature. It is because of them that Klatovy was born this center of drug preparation. So imagine that in the seventeenth century, it wasn't just business, it was a place where science combined with faith. For many years, the pharmacy has served as a key point for the health of the whole region.
Now pay attention to the architecture itself and the details that you can see right in front of you. Look closely at the entrance to the building. Notice the portal, the entrance arch, which is the real decoration of the whole house. The most significant element here is the unicorn sculpture. This mythical creature is not only an ornament, but a symbol that gives the pharmacy its unique character. It's fascinating to see how detailed this character is. It is important to mention that this portal with unicorn went through a thorough repair in the year two thousand and fourteen in order to return its original glory and so that even today's visitor can admire its beauty. A man named Jan Geschwendt is behind the overall design of the building, who has imprinted his period trail into the building.
When we think about the name, we find that the pharmacy wasn't always called as we know it today. The name "White unicorn" didn't start until a thousand seven hundred forty. It's a name that makes us feel mysterious and noble. The names of the people who left their trail are linked to the pharmacy. One of them was Jan Michal Firbas, which in the year one thousand seven hundred seventy-three bought the pharmacy equipment. Think of him as a meticulous pharmacist who spent long hours in a pharmacy mixing ingredients and helping the sick. These are the people who made this place the center of social and health life in Klatovy.
Now, I invite you to imagine what will happen to you if you enter. Although the pharmacy ceased to function as an active establishment in the year one thousand nine hundred sixty six, today you can visit the museum exhibition. It's like a journey through time. In the interior, you can really feel like you were in the Baroque era. Note in particular the equipment left behind. One of the most interesting pieces is copper-hot clock from the mid-eighteenth century. They are located under the statue Michaela, which is a detail that shows a high level of craft at that time. Watch how the light is reflected from copper and feel the silence of space that once filled the sound of mortars and rustling pharmaceutical recipes.
And now we're coming up with something that might surprise you and what is the real mystery and interest of this place. There's a stuffy tooth in the pharmacy. You may ask why there is a tooth from an ice-cold animal in a pharmacy in the heart of Bohemia. In ancient times, it was believed that the powder from the narwhal tooth had miraculous healing effects. People thought it was a unicorn horn, which exactly fits the name of the pharmacy. This is proof of how much science was intertwined with myths and legends back then. It's a fascinating testimony about how mankind sought a path to recovery and how precious it was to be a treasure and mystery.
This entire object is today protected as a cultural monument, which means it is his duty to preserve this history for future generations. It's where art, history and medicine meet. Today, when you look at the White unicorn building, you don't just see an old house in the square, but you see a memory of the people who lived here, working and trying to help others.
I suggest you now slowly walk past the building, revisit the details of the portal and try to imagine what the pharmacy looked like at the time of its greatest fame, when people came out of its door with a cure in their hand and hope in their hearts. If you have the chance, enter and be consumed by the atmosphere of the museum where time has stopped. Explore every corner, think about the Michael statue, and let yourself get caught up with the stuffing tooth.
Thank you for accompanying me on this short trip to Klatov history. I hope you're interested in the White Unicorn Pharmacy and feel the spirit of the time that still lives here. I wish you a pleasant continuation in discovering the beauty of this city and enjoy every moment you spend on these historic streets. Goodbye.
Tips for visitors
The best time to visit is spring or autumn, when the streets are less crowded and the Baroque details of the building stand out in mild light.
We recommend that only a small backpack be taken to the pharmacy to make it easier to move between historical cabinets and exhibits. If you are planning a tour, prepare comfortable shoes to walk around the old town.
For the best photos we recommend focusing on detailed interior decoration and pharmaceutical containers. The best light for façade images can be found in the morning when the sun lights up the square. In the interior, look for a light game on old wooden surfaces.
After visiting the pharmacy there is a short walk along Klatovy Square, located in the immediate vicinity. It's the perfect place to observe city architecture.
Families with children can appreciate the view of old pharmaceuticals and containers that look like from a fairy tale. We encourage children to tell stories about how earlier herbal and root drugs were prepared.

Seasonal recommendations
In spring, the city wakes up in fresh green and the light is fine, creating a pleasant atmosphere for walking through the historical centre. We recommend light but laminated clothing because the morning and evening air can still be cold. The best time to visit is in the morning when the air is the cleanest.
Summer brings intense sun and hot days that light the facades of buildings. In the high season there are the most people on the streets, so it is advisable to choose very early morning time to avoid the greatest heat. The practical is lightweight cotton and hat for head to protect from direct sun.
The autumn colors the surroundings in golden and brown tones and the light becomes golden and dreamy. The atmosphere is calmer and more intended. Due to frequent rainfall and wind weather, a waterproof coat or a solid umbrella and comfortable shoes are essential.
Zimą reigns in the spaces of the city of cold and short days that used to cut the darkness. In advent time, the surrounding area is heated by light lamps and atmosphere expectations. It is necessary to wear a warm sweater, wool hat and gloves so that a visit in the cold air remains a pleasant experience.
