Katedrála svatého Klimenta is located in the historical area of Klementina in Prague's Old Town. This Baroque temple is protected as a national cultural monument and represents an excellent example of the connection of all art crafts of its time into a uniform harmonious whole.

The place where the cathedral stands today has a rich history. The oldest frame of the temple building here was a small Romanesque-Gothic church with two five-sided apsides. The Dominicans founded their monastery in 1227, but it was ravaged by the Hussites in 1420. The new one-ship Baroque temple was built by Jesuits in the Klementina area between 1711 and 1715. The project was created by an unknown architect and the temple was later consecrated by the Archbishop of Mayer from Mayern. Although the crediting of the project is often attributed to Františka Maximilian to Kaňek, this figure is not entirely conclusive. In 1931, Prague's Archbishop František Korčák set it aside for Greek believers. The cathedral was formally promoted by the bulge of Pope John Paul II of 13 March 1996, which established the Apostolic Exarchate. Since the beginning of the 21st century, the temple has become a haven mainly for Ukrainian Greek Greek people, whose attendance increased significantly after 2022.

The construction from the outside is peaceful and modest, yet the Prague horizon is decorated with a high prism tower with baroque onion-shaped dancing. This tower is one of the dominant hundreds of Prague. The temple was originally connected to the neighboring temple of the Holy Salvator by a common sacristy, now this passage is closed.

The real treasure is the richly decorated interior. The vault is covered by fresco scenes from the life of St. Kliment, which Jan Hiebel painted in 1714-1715. They depict the key moments of his martyrdom - a mission to exile to Chersonés, where he found two thousand suffering Christians in quarry, his prayer and vision of the Lamb of God with a spring of pure water, while angels deliver his remains. Above the circle is a celestial vault with the Holy Trinity in the middle.

The main altar was originally designed by painter Jan Hieble, but it was replaced by the work of Josef Kramolín from 1770 with figures of evangelists and Holy Trinity. Kramolín also created a central picture of St. Kliment's Apotheosis. The ecclesiastical hall is decorated with wooden carvings with motifs from the life of St. Francis Xaversky, on the organ closet sitting musical angels.

The most valuable set of sculptures is the work of Matyas Bernard Braun from 1717-1721. There are stone statues of four Western church fathers and evangelists in nothing, side altars decorated with carvings of saints and angels. Štukkatura Štěpán Götzl covers archives and pilasters.

In the crypt below the temple there are brick boxes. Here is buried, for example, Chronicler Václav Hájek z Libočan, who died in 1553 in a nearby monastery of Dominicans at St. Anne's.

Today, the cathedral was confirmed as one of the main stalls of the religious life of the Ukrainian minority in the Czech Republic and remains a witness to the highest level of Prague's highest baroque.

Welcome to the heart of historical Prague, a place where every stop and every look offers as a journey deep into the past. You are standing in front of the Cathedral of St. Kliment, which is a solid and inseparable part of the vast complex of Klementina. Feel this atmosphere surrounding you. You are in one of the oldest neighborhoods of our city, in Prague Old Town, where history does not only count from books, but simply permeated every stone, every alley and every shadow that is thrown in these areas. In front of your eyes is a baroque temple whose presence is strong and gives rise to a sense of nobility and peace in the midst of a busy city. Look at the overall structure of this building and see its face floating over the surrounding roofs.

However, in order to understand the real weight of this place, we must let ourselves drift through the flow of time and return much further than we can see at first sight. The history of this place is not simple, it is a story of rise, destruction and rebirth. Already in the year one thousand two hundred twenty-seven here the Dominicans founded a smaller church, which was built in Romance Gothic style. It was a period when the foundations of Christian culture in these parts of the city were firmly anchored. But history was stormy. The times of Hussite wars have come, which have brought great destruction and devastation to this area. The original building was destroyed and the site was changed for a long time by religious and political revolutions. However, what you are seeing today is the result of a later, baroque period, which has brought new fame and clarity to this place. The Baroque temple, which you now see, was ceremonially consecrated in the year one thousand seven hundred fifteen Archbishop Mayer of Mayern. This event was a fresh start and strengthened the importance of this place within the religious life at the time.

Now pay attention to the architecture itself and to what opens up right in front of you. Although the names of the particular architects who designed this structure remained unknown in history, their genius work is evident in every detail. It is a single baroque temple, which means that its inner space is designed to create a unified and concentrated space for prayer and divine perception. Notice how the whole building is trying to balance perfectly. Katedrála svatého Klimenta is an excellent example of how all different arts and crafts have been able to unite into one harmonious whole. It's like a symphony where every craftsman, whether they were stonemakers, carpenters or other artists, contributed his tone part to the final piece.

Look up now, to heaven. Your eyes should be watching that tall prism tower that dominates the whole neighborhood. Its rising line is undoubtedly one of the most important elements of Prague's panoramic outlook. Notice the beautiful baroque onion dome that ends the tower. This dome gives the construction its characteristic appearance and at the same time links it beautifully to the sky. This tower serves as a visual beacon for anyone who passes through the old town, and reminds us that even in the heart of the city there is a place that goes to higher things.

In these areas and in their vicinity were also important personalities that shaped the cultural and spiritual history of our country. One of those whose name is linked to the historical context of this region is Václav Hájek z Libočan. Although his life story may not reflect directly in every stone detail of this cathedral, his presence in history reminds us of the deep and multi-dimensional roots on which this city stands.

You might find one fascinating thing about changing the identity of this place. Katedrála svatého Klimenta is not just a static monument, it is a living organism that has changed with every new epoch. Originally this building was built as a Roman Catholic church for Jesuits. It was part of their extensive work within the Catholic Church. However, today the situation is quite different. The cathedral has become the centre of spiritual life for Czech Greek people. This fundamental change in her creed and importance was not officially confirmed until much later, in the year one thousand nine hundred ninety-six. It was at that time that Pope John Paul was bullying and he officially promoted her to the cathedral. It is a fascinating example of how the religious map of our city and the whole country has changed over time without losing the sanctity and dignity of this place.

Now that you have a basic understanding of history, architecture and the spiritual importance of this monument in your hands, I suggest you continue your next walk. Let the atmosphere of Clementine and the old town drift. Every other alley you choose today can welcome you with a new view of Prague's history. See the surrounding buildings, see the light play on the old facades and enjoy the peace this place offers. Thank you for spending this moment with us and for choosing to pay attention to this important monument. We wish you a beautiful and inspiring journey further through the historical secrets of our city.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is in the morning or late afternoon, when the sunlight lights up the Baroque elements of the interior beautifully.

You can easily reach the centre of Prague by public transport and by car. Please check the current connection and parking options in the transport programs or on the city website.

We recommend taking small coins and comfortable shoes for walks. For families with children it is advisable to keep calm in order to preserve the religious atmosphere of the place.

The inner spaces of the temple are most suitable for photography in scattered light. In the immediate vicinity you can explore the historical complex of Klementinum, which includes a library and other important buildings.

Seasonal recommendations

In spring the surroundings of the temple are full of waking green and fine light. The atmosphere is fresh and full of hope, accompanied by the first warm rays of the sun falling on the facade. We recommend visiting a monument in the morning when it is quieter in the streets. Due to the changing weather, it is best to choose layered clothes.

The summer season brings intense sun and high temperatures that can be inaccessible in stone spaces. Expect large crowds of visitors from around the world in the high season. Come right after opening to avoid the biggest fronts, and select light, breathable substances.

Autumn in Old Town is melancholy thanks to golden leaves and frequent fog. The light is softer and creates deep shadows in the interior that highlight historical details. It is advisable to bring an umbrella and plan a visit until late afternoon when the mood is most respectful.

In winter, freezing air and short days rule, which gives the building a mysterious touch. In Advent Time, the surroundings are lit up and noisy, while there is silence inside. Don't forget the warm salary and gloves. Watch the shortened opening hours and consider visiting the time when it is already dark outside.
