Kavárna Elektra, located in the Hornický house on the corner of the Railway class and the Art Street in Moravian Ostrava, is a historical monument to Czech Art Art Art Art Art Art Nouveau. This Ostrava cafe from the first republic was opened on 18 November 1926 and since 19 November 1992 is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. Its history, architectural significance and transformations make it an interesting location for visitors.

The establishment of the Elektra Café was related to the urban development of the 20th century Ostrava, namely the construction of the Mining House between 1924 and 1926 according to the design of architects František Kolář and Jan Rubý. This four-story building with queues up to three streets (Jurečkov, Railway and Artistic) was decorated with sculptures of miners and smelters from the workshop Augustine Handzel. The cafe became part of the cultural life of the city, where important people met as actors Oldřich Nový, Jiří Voskovec and Jan Werich.

The architecture of the Mining House is an example of Art Nouveau style, characterized by complex ornament and harmonious combination of functionalism with decorative elements. The reconstruction carried out in 2012 under the leadership of J & T Bank preserved some of these primary features, although the interior was modernized and adapted to new features. Today, space is a combination of original Art Nouveau style with modern elements, creating a unique atmosphere.

The history of the Elektra Café was influenced by several key events and changes of owners. After its opening in 1926, the cafe passed through the closing period in 1930 due to competition from new cafes Fenix and Savoy. In 2001 there was a plan to rebuild the premises into the car salon, which caused resistance to historical care and to the public. Subsequently, the restaurant Hacienda Mexikana was created, which was legalized after the protests, but eventually moved to another location in 2011. The reconstruction carried out by J & T Bank led to the restoration of a cafe with a bank branch and art parts from the Art House.

Today, the Kavárna Elektra is open from Monday to Friday and offers visitors approximately fifty places named after known personalities who used to come here. Its historical importance and architectural value make it an interesting location for those interested in the cultural heritage of the Czech Republic.

Kavárna Elektra is a reminder of the rich history and cultural life of Ostrava. Its transformation and preservation as a monument shows the importance of protecting cultural values for future generations. Visiting this cafe offers not only a view of the past, but also an opportunity to appreciate the architectural art and history of Ostrava city.

Welcome to Moravian Ostrava. You're standing right here where history meets the daily heart rate of a modern city. Your attention is now drawn to this important corner, where the Railway Class and Art Street intersect. In front of you is a building that is not only part of the urban landscape, but is a living witness of the past era that shaped the face of this region. You are standing right in front of the historical monument that carries the soul of old Ostrava and its rise. Feel the atmosphere of a place where the industrial power of the city is combined with its cultural elegance.

Let us return together to the time when this space began to be born and formed. Imagine the period between 1924 and 1926. In these years, there was a building of a magnificent building known today as the Mining House. This house was not built randomly; It was a carefully thought-out project designed by the competent architects František Kolář and Jan Rubý. It was during this period, in 1926, that Kavárna Elektra opened in its ground floor areas. It was the period of the first Czech Republic, an era of immense optimism, bloom and incredible creative energy. Elektra immediately became an important point on the social map of the city, a place where various layers of society were mixed and a new culture was born.

Now pay attention to the architecture itself, which now surrounds you. Notice how the building works in the space of this corner. It is an excellent example of Art Nouveau style, which at that time dominated the idea of beauty, fluency and elegance. Secession is about organic lines, about harmony between human imagination and natural shapes. Now, if you look at the facade, feel the gentleness and nobility that this style brings. This building is not just an ordinary house; It's a work of art that can communicate with the surroundings. Thanks to this high value, Kavárna Elektra has been protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic since 19 November 1992. It is proof that its beauty and historical significance are irreplaceable for our country.

Now imagine what voices and stories have been heard in these spaces in the past. The cafe was not just about drinking coffee or having a short rest; It was a real scene for life. You can imagine, in your mind, sitting here at the table, the great people of the time who were changing the world of art and politics. Perhaps here at the table, the famous actors and personalities such as Oldřich Nový, or the legendary art pair Jiří Voskovec and Jan Werich, were considering their new works. Elektra was a place of mind meeting, a place where a high culture connected with the daily life of the city's inhabitants. It was an era where the cafe meant much more than just a place to eat; It was a social institution where relationships were built and opinions exchanged.

But the history of this place wasn't always about peace and constant glory. We must also look at the period when this monument was subjected to great trials. In 1930, the cafe had to close its doors for a while due to the strong competition of new and modern places, such as Fenix and Savoy cafes. She had to face changes in time and new trends that were rapidly spreading at that time. However, the greatest test of her existence came much later, in modern times. In 2001, a plan appeared that could forever change the face of this place and destroy its historical character. They wanted to make room for a car salon in these rooms. This idea has given rise to huge resistance not only for experts in the protection of monuments, but above all for the general public. People realized that if we allowed this fundamental reconstruction, we would lose a irreversible piece of our history and identity. This struggle to preserve the monument was successful and showed how much people value their heritage. Thanks to this resistance, a thorough reconstruction was carried out in 2012 by J & T Banka. This work was crucial because it was able to preserve all the original architectural features that stand before you today and restore the building its original dignity.

Now that you know this fascinating story, you can look at the Elektra Café with much greater understanding. It's not just a piece of a wall on the corner of two streets; It is a symbol of the struggle for beauty, history and the city's right to preserve its precious treasures. It is a reminder of the time when architecture sought harmony and when cafes became centres of human thought.

In your next passage around this place, stop and feel the atmosphere that still persists. Maybe by looking at the facade details, you'll see things you missed before. Continue to discover the beauty of Moravian Ostrava and enjoy every next step on this journey through time. Thank you for joining us for this short tour. We wish you a pleasant continuation in the history of our city.

Seasonal recommendations

In spring, the space is fresh and the natural light gradually fills the rooms. The surrounding area of the building begins to bloom, which gives the visit a pleasant touch. We recommend arriving in the morning when it is quieter in the establishment. Choose a layered outfit to protect you from changing weather.

In the summer months there is a pleasant shelter from the hot sun and city rage in the interior. Clear light highlights clean lines of architecture. Due to the large number of visitors it is best to come right after the opening. Dress up light and airy substances to make you comfortable.

Autumn brings golden colors and lighter lighting to Ostrava, which underlines the noble atmosphere of the cafe. It's the perfect time for a long contemplation with a hot drink. Don't forget the waterproof coat or umbrella. The most appropriate visit is in the late afternoon.

In winter, the building serves as a warm harbor before freezing and snow. Evening lighting creates a cozy and romantic feeling. Due to a shorter day, we recommend monitoring the current opening times. Dress very warm, especially when travelling from the city centre.
