Kino Lucerna is based in the representative palace of Lucerna, whose construction was initiated by Vácslav Havel between 1907 and 1921. The project was participated by builder Dobroslav Hnídek and architect Stanislav Bechyně, who also designed theatre with revolving auditorium outside the cabaret hall. But this generous concept proved temporary - the theatre was converted into a cinema hall less than a year after opening. The biograph was festively opened on 3 December 1909 and since then, continuously, serves a film experience.

The cinema originally appeared in the Art Nouveau style, which, over time, transformed into a pseudorokova form. This transformation not only decorated the interior, but also reflected the changing taste of spectators and owners.

Since 1926 Václav and Miloš Havel took the lead in the cinema, which proved to be a decisive milestone. It was during their administration that the cinema went through an important technical revolution: in 1929 sound images were shown here as in the first Prague biographer. The first such film that Czechoslovak viewers saw in Lucerne was The Comedian Ship. The sound had changed cinema vigorously, and Lucerna was among the first to accept this revolution.

The second half of the twentieth century has brought a major break. After February 1948, as a result of political changes, the cinema became the property of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia. All activities were thus subject to state control and ideological supervision. The political changes at the time were also reflected in the transformation of the original second cinema hall - originally designed for private projects and pre-premieres of Lucernafilm films led by Havel - its premises were converted to offices and language classrooms after nationalization.

November 1989 and the Velvet Revolution meant a return to the past. Since 1991, the cinema has returned to the property of the Havel family, which leads it to this day. The continuity has thus effectively restored after four decades of interruptions.

In 2014, on the occasion of the 105th anniversary of the opening, the cinema festively opened its second hall. The new space will accommodate fifty spectators and again serve a purpose that was already intended in the distant past - special projections and exceptional programs. The return of the second hall was a symbolic closure of the circle and confirmation that Lucerna remained the key point of Prague's cinematographic culture.

Lucerna presents not only the oldest still functional biographer in the Czech Republic, but also a living witness to the modern history of the country. Its history is now burdensome, but also a moment of triumph, technological innovation, and layers of overlapping styles that have left traces of their time.

Welcome to the heart of Prague, right on Wenceslas Square. You're standing in front of a facade that's been luring viewers into its inner space for over a hundred years. In front of you is the impressive building of the Lucerna Palace, which now hides one of the oldest still working cinemas in the Czech Republic. When you look at it, you see its elegant lines and representative character, which corresponds to its original purpose. This building is not just an ordinary building, but a living witness to changes in Czech culture, technology and society. Now, when you put on your headphones and get carried away by the sound of my voice, prepare to travel in time. We will explore together the history of the place where the new era of film art was born in our city.

Let's get back to the beginnings of this fascinating complex first. The building of the Lucerna Palace was started in 1907 and completed in 1921. The initiator of this magnificent project was Vácslav Havel, who wished to create a place for performances and cultural events. Originally, the building was designed in Art Nouveau style, which is evident in its organic shapes and decorative elements. Later, however, she went through the modifications that gave her a pseudorococcal character. This architectural mix creates a unique atmosphere that combines the elegance of the late nineteenth century with ease and playfulness of the twentieth. The architects involved in the design were Stanislav Bechyně and Dobroslav Hnídek. Their work proves that even in the era of rapid development of the city it was possible to create spaces that are not only functional but also aesthetically timeless.

Now pay attention to the details surrounding you. Even if we're out there, imagine how the environment has changed. Originally there was a theatre with a revolving auditorium, which was a very modern and attractive solution at the time. This theatre, however, was converted into a cinema hall less than a year after opening. This change was due to the rapidly growing popularity of film art. Kino Lucerna has thus ceased to be just a place for live performances, but it has become a centre for film images. This transformation shows how quickly the cultural preferences of the public changed and how architecture had to adapt to new technologies.

The key moment in the history of this place is 1929. It was here, at the Lucerna cinema, that the first sound film was mentioned in Prague. Imagine the atmosphere of that evening. The audience, accustomed to a silent film accompanied by piano or orchestra, suddenly heard people's voices coming directly from the shadows. It was a moment that changed the way we perceive the film forever. The sound brought a new dimension to realism and emotion. Kino Lucerna thus witnessed one of the most important technological revolutions in the history of entertainment. This fact gives him special weight and makes him a place of deep historical importance for every cinema lover.

The history of this place is closely linked to the Havel family, who were its long-standing owners and administrators. Vácslav Havel, whose name was the palace, laid the foundations of this cultural institute. His sons, Václav Havel and Miloš Havel, continued his work and kept the cinema going for decades. In 1991 there was a major break when the cinema returned to the property of the Havel family. This return symbolizes the restoration of cultural heritage and the return to traditions that have been interrupted in the past. The Havel family became guardians of this place, which not only had commercial value but also personal value for them. Their care of the cinema ensured that its original character was preserved and adapted to modern requirements.

An interesting fact that many visitors can be surprised is that the Lucerna cinema was the first of Prague's biographer to project sound images. This primate is not only technical detail, but proof of how quickly Praha adapted to world trends. The city has always been open to new ideas and technologies, and the Lucerna cinema has proved it on its own. It is also interesting that after February 1948, a period of political change in Czechoslovakia, the cinema continued to operate, although the circumstances were challenging for cultural institutions. Yet he managed to maintain his position as one of the main cultural centers of the city. This resistance and ability to survive even in difficult times are part of his legend.

In 2014 there was a further expansion when the second cinema hall was opened. This move enabled the Lucerna cinema to serve more spectators and offer a wider selection of films. Today the cinema serves not only as a historical monument, but also as a full-fledged modern cinema, where current premieres and classical pictures are shown. This combination of history and the present creates a unique experience. The visitor can sit in the historic hall and watch a film that was made a hundred years ago, or on the contrary, modern production. This flexibility is the key to Lucerna cinema still attracting new generations of viewers.

If you look at the facade, consider what stories happened behind these houses. Every brick, every stone carries traces of time. You can imagine people coming here to the first sound movies, talking, crying and laughing. You can imagine how important cultural events took place here that shaped public opinion. Kino Lucerna is not just a building but a space for sharing emotions and experiences. It's where generations meet, where the past and the present intersect. This continuity is what makes this place so special.

Think about how the perception of film has changed from silent images to sound images, from black and white to color. Kino Lucerna was the origin of these changes. It was a place where new technologies were tested and audiences learned new ways of telling stories. This role of pioneer gives him authority and respect. Although today there are many modern cinemas with the latest projection systems, the Lucerna cinema keeps its place thanks to its history and atmosphere. It's not just about technology, it's about the feeling a visitor gets when he finds himself in this space.

In conclusion, I would like to thank you for taking the time to stop by this important monument. I hope you enjoyed this short guide and that you got a new view of the Lucerna cinema. Now you have the opportunity to enter and experience this atmosphere with your own eyes. Take a look at the halls, listen to the silence that rules here, and imagine the noises that once sounded here. Kino Lucerna awaits you with open arms, ready to offer you an unforgettable experience. Whether you choose to watch the current premiere or remind yourself of the classic, know that you are in a place with rich history and deep cultural significance.

I wish you a pleasant experience and many inspiring moments of film. Zap
