The Church of the Birth of the Virgin Mary in Záborí, belonging to the village Kly, is a neo-Renaissance sacral building built in 1884 on the site of the original Gothic temple. Since 1966 it has been protected as a cultural monument and stands out with its rich interior, which combines elements from various historical periods.

The first mention of Záborí dates back to the beginning of the 14th century, when the village was the property of the St. John's Monastery. At that time, there was already a Gothic church. According to the cadastral map from 1842, the original building was smaller and had a different orientation, although the western facade line remained.

The current church represents the style of historism, namely the neo-Renaissance. It is a one-ship rectangular space with a transverse boat and a semi-circular end presbytery. The entrance facade is decorated with a central risalita with a tower, broken strips of rustic and pairs of semi-circular windows. Side facades have rustic pilasters and rectangular windows with semi-circular ends. The ceilings in the ship and the presbytery are flat.

The interior combines elements from several centuries. The main altar is a rococo work from the second half of the 18th century, originating from the abolished Prague monastery of services. Above it is a picture of the Coronation of the Virgin Mary from the first half of the 18th century. The Baroque piece is a 1690 Piety painting that signed J. M. Rottmayer. The statue of St. Wenceslas comes from the second half of the 18th century and the statue of St. John Nepomuk from the first half of the 19th century. The rest of the church's equipment is 19th century.

The church is surrounded by a former cemetery with cast iron crucifix. North of the monument, across the street, stands a Baroque rectory from the third quarter of the 18th century. This storey building has a rectangular floor plan and a saddle roof, the floor is divided by pilasters.

The building underwent repairs in 1958-1959 and after 2000 the facade of the upper part of the tower was restored. The church is still undergoing a gradual reconstruction today. It is accessible to the public during services which take place on Sunday from 11.00.

The Church of the Birth of the Virgin Mary is a valuable example of neo-Renaissance architecture with a unique historical interior, which intersects traces of Baroque and historism, making it a place of interest to visit during the survey of the village Kly.

The church you see before you was built in 1884 in the place of an older Gothic temple. This Neo-Renaissance church is a single boat with a semi-circular end of the presbytery and tower, which you will now look carefully at. It is interesting that even though his architects remained unknown, their work stands as a testament to the past and traditions of this area.

Let's move closer to the building. Note the elegant facade with a tower that stands out with its symmetry and harmonious design. This church was not only a place of prayer, but also a cultural centre for local residents. The key personality associated with this monument is J. M. Rottmayer, which could play a role in the maintenance or renovation of the church during its history. Although the specific role is not documented, its name often appears in the context of regional cultural monuments.

The main altar is the interesting thing you can see now. It is a rococo work from the second half of the 18th century, originating from the abolished Prague monastery of services. This altar brings to the church some of the wealth and elegance of baroque art.

Now pay attention to Pieta, which is another baroque piece of construction. This important art object gives the church depth and spiritual atmosphere.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring: In the spring nature awakens around the church and the bright morning sun highlights the details of historical architecture and ongoing repairs. The atmosphere is full of expectations, although construction works can be very active during this period. We recommend that you take several layers of clothing because spring weather is very variable. The best is to visit the place in the morning, where the air is the cleanest and the light is the most attractive for observing the surroundings.

Summer: Summer months bring rich greenery to Klys and long days that allow you to observe the memory in full sun. In the main summer season, however, more people can move around the building, which may disturb a calm atmosphere. For the best experiences come early in the morning to avoid the greatest heat and crowds. Don't forget the headgear and comfortable shoes that are necessary for movement near the reconstruction site.

Autumn: Autumn season offers melancholy beauty thanks to golden shades of leaves and morning fog, which provide a mysterious ring to the church. The light is softer at this time and ideal for viewing the shadows on the walls. However, it is necessary to count on higher humidity, so prepare for waterproof jacket and tighter shoes. Afternoon walks during this period are the best way to enjoy a calm atmosphere before the arrival of the frost.

Winter: In winter, the monument is very steep and peaceful, especially if the landscape is covered with snow or frost. The day is short, so plan to visit around the noon hours when the lights are most. Due to ongoing reconstruction and cold, we recommend choosing very warm clothes, including scarves and gloves. There are fewer visitors in Advent time, but count on limited visibility for short days.
