The Church of the Virgin Mary is among the most important monuments of the early Middle Ages in Bohemia, as it represents the beginning of Christianity in Prague's chateau. The historians dated its creation on the basis of the analysis of the Vaclav legends until 882-884, shortly after Bořivov's move from Left Hradec, where he had previously built the church of St. Kliment. The church stood in the place where the Prague Chateau was later established, and was replaced by the Basilica of St. George and the Rotunda of Saint Vitus over time on his Christian acropolis.

The oldest structure was a simple longitudinal structure without dividing the inner space. Ruled from the blocks of the Belarusian leech, it reached 7,5 × 6 metres and had a graduated presbytery with a curvature. A larger tomb was built on its floor for Bořivov himself, but it was allegedly empty. Anthropologist Emanuel Vlček judged that the prince was eventually buried in the aforementioned rotunda of St. Vitus. In the 11th century, the church was rebuilt considerably. The new church with smaller dimensions of 7.4 × 5.9 meters had elevated apside on polygonal foundations with an altar in the middle. At this time there was also a small tomb intended for Prince Spytihrava I, who was buried here in 915, and his wife, who died in 918. It was at this time that young Václav's cuts were also allegedly held.

For centuries, the church served as the first Christian sanctuary of the Prague chateau, with the burial ground gradually growing around it. Due to its limited size, the sacral center has moved to a higher location of the chateau over time. Written references to the church disappear from sources after the 13th century; the last indirect mention comes from 1255 and its final demise can be placed until 1278 or shortly thereafter.

The remains of the building were scientifically discovered in the 1950s by the archaeologist Ivan Borkovsky based on his 1949 forecast. A detailed survey in the 1950s-1952 documented the preserved parts of the two building phases, including both tombs, remains of the meadow and fragments of the tiles. The remains were adapted for their presentation on site and in 1958 the view from the Prague Castle Paintings was opened. In 1997, the architect Borek Šípek expanded this view through two windows in modern copper frames. To date, mainly the northern part of the masonry of the younger, eleventh-century building has been preserved up to about 1.5 metres, as well as the remains of medium and younger floors, the foundations of the winning arch and fragments of the altar.

The visitor of Prague Chateau can thus make an idea of the oldest roots of Christianity in the Czech Republic and in fact see more than a thousand years old stone witness of the early Czech state.

Architectural development

The original church was a one-space building with dimensions of 7,5 × 6 meters with a semi-circular presbytery and a tomb for Bořivovy I in the floor. In the 11th century, the church was converted to a larger building with dimensions of 7.4 × 5.9 meters with elevated apsid and a new altar. The masonry was made of white-mountain optics, preserved fragments of the north wall and the foundation of the altars. Later modifications included new prepairing and reconstruction of the altar.

Owners

The church was originally part of Prague Chateau, which served as the seat of Czech princes and kings. Over the centuries, the ownership of the church has changed along with the ownership of the chateau. Today the church is under the administration of the National Heritage Institute and is open to the public.

Welcome to one of the most secret and important places of Prague Chateau. Please stop for a moment and feel the space around you. You are standing in a passageway where you are welcomed behind glass windows by the remains of the building, which at first glance may look inconspicuous, but it is absolutely essential for the history of our countries. What you see before you are the remains of the Church of Our Lady. It is a place where the silence of the present day meets echoes from a time when the heart of an early Czech state was warm. Look carefully through the glass at the stone fragments. You may see only the old masonry in them, but you're actually looking at the oldest preserved sacral structure in the territory of today's chateau.

Let us now return together in time more than a thousand years back, to the end of the ninth century. Imagine Prague at the time. It was not a big city as we know it today, but a fort that gradually became the center of power. It was in the years eight hundred and eighty-two to eight hundred and eighty-four that Prince Bořivoj first built this temple. Bořivoj moved here from a place called Left Hradec and brought with him a new faith. This church wasn't just a building, it was a symbol. It was the first temple in Prague and was the beginning of Christianity in Prague's chateau. At that time, it was a bold and fundamental change that changed the course of our cultural and spiritual development forever.

Now pay attention to what you can see in the details. If you look at the material from which the remains of the building are built, you will notice light grey stones. It's an emergency. Opuka was the favourite building material at the time because of its availability and workability. Originally it was a very simple, small longitudinal structure. Imagine it as a modest, narrow space, which, in contrast to today's monumental cathedrals, seemed very intimate. In the eleventh century, however, the church undergone a great change. It was converted to a much larger structure. At that time there were added new elements, such as the apsida, the semi-circular ending of the altar part, and a new altar was introduced. Even if you see only fragments today, try to reconstruct the feeling in your mind when you entered this space at the time, which was the most important spiritual centre of the chateau.

With this place are the names we know from history textbooks, but here they have their specific, tangible meaning. In addition to the founder of Bořivov's first church, other personalities of the prince's family join the church. One of them was Spytirrtle first. In the year nine hundred and fifteen he was buried here and thus this church became an important burial ground for the first Czech princes. Imagine you are in the early Middle Ages and this place serves as the last resting place of the most powerful men in the country. In this quiet space, not only faith, but political legitimacy and dynasty memory concentrated. In connection with this place is also the first name of Václav, which only underlines how deep this church is rooted in the history of our first rulers.

Now you might wonder why we don't see the whole church today, but only the remains behind the glass. History is sometimes cruel, and the buildings that were once the center of the world can die. The Church of the Virgin Mary has gradually lost its meaning and has disappeared completely in the 13th century, probably replaced by more recent and more representative buildings of the chateau complex. For centuries he remained hidden underground, forgotten and covered with layers of time and new buildings. It was not until the year one thousand nine hundred fifty-eight that the presentation of these remnants behind the glass windows began so that this hidden treasure could see the world again. It is a fascinating idea that under our feet in the passages of Prague Chateau is a millennium of history that is now revealed to us only in a small section.

The interesting thing that can help you see the importance of this place is the fact that it is an absolute beginning. If you look at the blocks, you don't just see the stone, but you see the first stone of Christian Prague. It is a place where the old world met with a new world, where the traditions of pre-Christian times mixed with a new faith coming from Europe. It's a kind of historical anchor that connects us to the very beginnings of our city. Imagine the contrast between today's noisy centre of Prague and the silence of this small, longitudinal temple in which the first Czech princes prayed.

Now, before we say good-bye and you go on, I suggest you go around the glass case one more time and watch the texture of the leaf stone from different angles. Try to remember how many generations of people have passed this place without knowing that deep beneath them lies the foundations of the first temple of Prague. This monument teaches us that the most important may not always be the greatest or the most visible. Sometimes it's the smallest fragments, the modest remnants of the masonry that tell the greatest stories.

Thank you for letting me take you to this special place. I hope you have felt the atmosphere of the early Middle Ages and that these remnants of the Church of Our Lady are now speaking in a clearer voice. Now I invite you to explore Prague Chateau again. Please continue your journey and look for other traces of history that are hidden in every stone of this chateau complex. I wish you a pleasant ongoing tour and many new discoveries. Goodbye.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is early morning or late afternoon when there are fewer tourists in place. In these hours you can explore the church in a quiet environment and enjoy the atmosphere without crowds. In addition, in the morning light it is ideal for shooting indoor spaces where natural light highlights historical details.

The transport to the church is simple because it is located directly in the Prague Chateau area. It is recommended to use public transport - stops are nearby and connections are frequent.

When visiting, wear comfortable shoes because it is a historic place with stony sidewalks. It is advisable to have enough water and sun protection in the summer months, because you are in an open space. If you are planning to take pictures, do not forget the batteries and memory cards, because the inner spaces are rich in detailed decoration.

Photography is permitted, but care must be taken to respect the reconstruction work and archaeological sites. The best places for photographs are the entrance part of the church and its inner space where natural light creates beautiful contrasts. It is recommended to photograph in the morning or afternoon light when light is softer and less contrast.

In the vicinity of the Church of the Virgin Mary there are several other interesting places worth visiting. For example, Prague Chateau with its many historical buildings, such as the Rotunda of St. Vitus, is ideal for further inspection. For families with children it is advisable to visit the chateau gardens or walk on the chateau terraces where the panorama of the city is possible.

For families with children, the visit to the church of Our Lady is particularly interesting due to its historical importance and the possibility to become acquainted with the Czech past. Children can be intrigued by the story of the founding of the church and its importance for Prague Chateau. In the surroundings you can also visit interactive exhibitions in Prague Chateau, which are often intended for younger visitors.

It is a complex of several buildings and includes various monuments such as palaces, chapel and chateau towers.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring Spring in the Church of Our Lady offers a unique combination of sunny light and awakening nature. The glass windows of the church, richly decorated with stained glass, then shines with pastel shades, while spring trees flourish outside and the lawn in front of the temple turns into a green carpet. The atmosphere is light, full of hope, and the inner spaces appear to be lit by a fine, scattered light that penetrates through the windows. During this period, the church is often visited by families with children who come here after spring flowers and light, which resembles the beginning of a new cycle. I recommend visiting the church early in the morning, when it is still quiet and the crowds are not so abundant. It is convenient to wear light, but roofing clothes, because the indoor temperature is colder than outside, and don't forget the comfortable shoes - the church is located in the heart of Prague, where sidewalks can be wet after rain.

Summer In the summer months, the Church of the Virgin Mary shines in the sun and offers a unique atmosphere where the outdoor space in front of the temple becomes a place of meeting and rest. Sun rays reflect off the white facades of the church and create playful shadows that change during the day. The inside of the church is often lit directly by sunlight during this period, which penetrates through stained glass and creates colour patterns on the ground and walls. The atmosphere is lively, but calm, because visitors like to relax here after a walk through the historical centre. The best time to visit is early morning or late afternoon when there are fewer tourists and temperatures are more pleasant. It is convenient to wear light, but roofing clothes because the church is cold, and don't forget enough water because summer days in Prague are hot.

Autumn Autumn visit to the Church of the Virgin Mary is magical, because the outdoor space turns into a colorful palette of yellow, orange and red leaves that rustle on the wind. The sun shines lower, and its rays penetrate through the stained glass of the church and create golden reflections on the walls and floors that give the place a mysterious atmosphere. The inside of the church appears to be even more illuminated, because sunlight is reflected from colored leaves outside. The atmosphere is calm and reflexive, ideal for reflection. The best time to visit is in the morning when the light is still sufficient and the crowds are not so abundant. It is convenient to wear warm but not too heavy clothes because it can be cold outside, and don't forget the comfortable shoes because autumn rains can make the sidewalks slippery.

Winter The winter visit to the Church of the Virgin Mary offers a unique atmosphere where the outdoor space turns into a quiet, snow environment that gives the place mystery. The sun shines low above the horizon, and its rays penetrate through the stained glass of the church and create fine silver glare on the walls and floors that resemble the winter fairy tale. The inside of the church is often lit with candles and ceramic lamps, which provide the place with warmth and cosy. The atmosphere is calm and reflexive, ideal for reflection and relaxation. The best time to visit is in the morning when the light is still sufficient and the crowds are not so abundant. It is convenient to wear warm, roofed clothes because the outside can be very cold, and don't forget the comfortable shoes because the winter rain and snow can make the sidewalks slippery.
