Kostel svaté Kateřiny (České Meziříčí) Church

The Church of Saint Catherine in České Meziříčí is an outstanding example of Baroque architecture, showcasing both historical significance and cultural heritage. Situated in the town of České Meziříčí within the Královéhradecký kraj region, this church is recognized as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. Constructed between 1748 and 1752, it replaced an earlier wooden structure that had deteriorated.

The Church's origins date back to when České Meziříčí was undergoing significant changes. Initially, a wooden church likely existed around 1300, serving as an Utraquist church after the Hussite Wars before being abandoned for two years. From 1626 to 1630, its spiritual administration belonged to Přepych. The current Baroque structure emerged when Rudolf hrabě Colloredo commissioned its construction following the demolition of the original wooden church in 1748 due to structural concerns. This new edifice was consecrated on November 25, 1752, marking a significant moment in the town's religious and architectural history.

Architecturally, the Church features a single nave design with a presbytery, a sacristy on the north side, and a chapel on the south. The western façade boasts a distinctive bell tower with oblique corners and pilasters, enhancing its Baroque aesthetic. Inside, visitors can admire Baroque altars, pulpit, and sculptures from the period of construction. Notably, the figurative decoration includes works by Královéhradecký sculptor František Decker, who crafted the altar figures of Saint Catherine and Saint Barbara in 1755. Additionally, a significant feature is the large crypt beneath the church floor, housing several local priests.

Throughout its history, the Church has experienced various changes in ownership and administration. Rudolf hrabě Colloredo played a pivotal role in its Baroque transformation by commissioning the new structure after the original wooden church was deemed unsafe. The interior also reflects historical shifts; for instance, an original silver baptismal font from 1558 was sold in 1796 to fund a side altar dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, crafted by Bartoš of Dobruška.

The surrounding area adds further interest. A sculpture of Immaculata from 1749, originally placed near a bridge over Dědina, was relocated to an old cemetery before the church due to landscape changes. This relocation underscores how the environment around the church has evolved over time.

Today, the Church of Saint Catherine remains a vibrant part of České Meziříčí's cultural and religious life. Regular services are held on Sundays at 9:30 AM and Thursdays at 5:00 PM during summer months. Its historical significance, architectural beauty, and rich interior make it a compelling destination for visitors interested in exploring the Baroque period and Bohemian history.
