St. Gabriel's Church is situated in a dominant position at the southern foot of the hill Petřín in Holečkov Street in Prague 5 - Smíchov, where vineyards once grew. Its official name - The Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary - reflects its owners and the spirit that pervades it, even though visitors know it according to the former Benedict monastery in which it belongs.

The church is part of the female abbey of the order of the Beuron congregation, founded in 1888 according to the idea project of the Belgian benedictor and Abbot Hildebrand de Hemptinna. A specific architecture was developed by the Belgian priest and builder Gislain de Béthun. The building was essentially financially secured by the founder of the monastery, Gabriela hraběnka Sweerts-Šporková, which however did not live to be completed. The New Romanesque church was completed within four years and was consecrated in 1891 by the Archbishop of Prague, Cardinal František Schönborn. The interior decoration continued until 1917.

The construction consists of a two-boat basilica with a semi-circular presbytery, built of unwashed sandstone blocks in a new Romanesque style. The Западé facade is decorated with a portal with two sitting statues - Saint Benedict of Nursie with a scroll of Greek rules and his sister, Saint Scholastika. Above them is the statue of the archangel Gabriel, patron saint of the founder. Churches of the inner surface dividing flat lisen and arc ornament.

The beautiful paintings inside come from a workshop called Beuron School, led by a German monk and artist Petr Desiderius Lenz (1832-1928). They were realized by his pupil, painter Jan Verkade, with the help of Jakob Würger. The central composition consists of the throne of Christ Pantocrator with the Latin inscription "I am who I am," surrounded by Czech earthly patrons - Saint Wenceslas, Saint Vojtěch and Saint John Nepomucký, whose remains were placed in the main altar, and also Saint Ludmila. Above the main altar stands the sumptuous marble statues of the Virgin Mary and the archangel Gabriel by Desideria, depicting the scene of the Annunciation. All liturgical tools were created by Prague goldsmith Henry Grünfeld according to Desidere's designs.

Above the southern side boat stands a prism temple tower 43 meters high with a jachlan roof. In 1889, the benedicts from the Austrian Abbey Nonnberg in Salzburg started their work with St. Gabriel, strengthened by other sisters from Czech German-speaking families. However, after the creation of the Czechoslovak Republic, anti-German moods turned against the Reicheries and therefore went to Styria in 1919. Both the monastery and the church sold the Order to the Czechoslovak Ministry of Posts and Telegrams on condition that they continue to serve for worship.

Since 1964, the ensembles have been listed in the list of cultural monuments. The Czech Post owned it for nearly 100 years until it was sold to private companies in 2019. Today, the church belongs to the Smichov parish of St. Wenceslas and remains a place of liturgical ceremonies.

The Church of Saint Gabriel at Smíchov is actually dedicated to the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary. It took the name of Saint Gabriel from the former monastery, to whose grounds it belongs. It stands in a prominent position on the southern foothills of Petřín, in Holečkova Street, on the site of former vineyards. Together with the monastery, it has been a cultural monument since nineteen sixty-four.

The Benedictine monastery of the Beuron congregation was founded in eighteen eighty-eight. The ideological project was prepared by the Belgian Benedictine, Abbot Hildebrand de Hemptinne, and developed by his assistant, the Belgian priest and architect Gislain de Béthune. The foundress of the monastery, Countess Gabriela Sweerts-Šporková, paid for a substantial part of the construction. However, she did not live to see its completion. The church was finished in eighteen ninety-one and was consecrated by Prague's Archbishop, Cardinal František Schönborn. The decoration continued until nineteen seventeen.

It is a Neo-Romanesque two-aisled basilica made of unplastered sandstone blocks with a semicircular sanctuary. The northern side aisle here replaces the wing of the cloister of the adjacent convent. Above the southern side aisle rises a rectangular tower forty-three meters high with a pyramidal roof. The portal of the main entrance is decorated with enthroned statues of the patrons of the Benedictine order. Saint Benedict holds a book of his monastic rules, beside him sits his sister, Saint Scholastica. Above them stands the Archangel Gabriel, the patroness's patron.

The interior is covered with paintings of the Beuron school, founded by the German painter, sculptor, architect and monk Peter Desiderius Lenz. The paintings were executed by his pupil Jan Verkade and assisted by Jakob Würger. They are dominated by the enthroned Christ Pantocrator with the Latin inscription I am, who I am. Around him are the Bohemian patrons of the land: Saint Wenceslaus, Saint Adalbert, Saint John of Nepomuk and Saint Ludmila. Reliquaries of the first three saints were placed in the main altar. The other paintings also have Latin inscriptions, mostly quotations from the Bible. On either side of the altar stand life-size statues of the Virgin Mary and the Archangel Gabriel in white marble in the scene of the Annunciation. They were created by Father Desiderius himself. According to his designs, Prague goldsmith Jindřich Grünfeld made the altar vessels.

The first nuns arrived in eighteen eighty-nine from the Nonnberg convent in Salzburg and were joined by sisters from Czech German-speaking families. After the establishment of Czechoslovakia, anti-German and anti-Catholic sentiments turned against them. In nineteen nineteen, they therefore left for Styria and the order sold the monastery together with the church to the Ministry of Posts and Telegraphs. The condition was that services would continue to be held in the church. The Czech postal service sold the complex in twenty nineteen to a private company. The church belongs to the Saint Wenceslaus parish in Smíchov and continues to serve religious services.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit St. Gabriel's church is in the early afternoon, especially during spring or autumn, when fewer people and atmosphere are calm. Sunlight brings special beauty to the church, which is ideal for photography.

When visiting, bring shoes suitable for walking on stone floors and warm clothes, especially in the winter months. Remember also the sunglasses or hat if you plan to take pictures.

For photography is the best place in front of the church, especially when the sun stops behind the peak of Petřín. This moment offers an ideal light effect to capture architectural details.

In the vicinity of the church you can visit South foot of the top of Petřín, where there are beautiful gardens and parks. For families with children it is ideal for a short walk or picnic.
