The Monastic Church of the Annunciation of the Lord stands on the premises of the canon of premonstrates in Teplá as one of the most important statues of Jewish medieval construction. The three-seater basilica grew gradually from 1193 to 1232 in a combination of Romanesque and Gothic styles, while the western part with the Gothic westwerk shows elements of Romanesque building, while the remaining space is decorated with early Gothic broken arches and rib arches.

The church was connected from the very beginning to the personality of the Grape, the blessed founder of the monastery, whose remains lie in the grave before the main altar. Respect for him grew quickly - soon after his death, the brothers of caution began to worship him as a saint, and when his feast was set for the 14th of July in the 14th century, he celebrated this day in both Pramonstrat monasteries. In 1793, the remains of his sister Vojslava were also transferred to this Grape's grave, which previously consisted of a monastery in Chotošov (abolished in 1782). The blessing of the Grapes by Pope Leo XIII in 1897 strengthened his cult; His body was then transferred to a side altar, today a reliquary.

The church also contains evidence of the development of the monastery through its buildings. After the mid-13th century Abbot Benedict (1147- 1259) built the chapel of All Saints south of the entrance. The important moment was the 20th of June, when this church was sanctified by the Bishop of Prague, John II, the King of Václav I. and many Reich leaders took part in the act. The period of prosperity in the 15th and 16th centuries enabled the abbot Zikmud, who maintained good relations with King George of Podebrad, to restore damaged buildings and decorate them with silver statues. Although 1549 brought tragedy - the plague унichil almost the entire convention - Abbot Jan Kurz immediately opened the monastery school with 24 pupils.

Today's interior is the color of the Baroque. At the beginning of the 18th century it was rebuilt by the famous builder Kryštof Dienzenhofer. In the 1990s, Abbot Ambros Alfred added a new Romanesque portal with statues of order patrons - St. Augustine, Bl. Grapes and St. Norbert. The interior decoration includes wooden figural sculptures from Ignatius František Platzer and frescoes from Elias Dollhopf. Particular attention deserves to be paid to the kenotaf in the northern side chapel with the Grape Statue, the statue of the God Chrónos and the two angels. In 2018, a general repair of the church started, which continues to take care of this valuable building.

The monastery church of the Annunciation in Teplá stands in the area of a premonstratensian canonry. It is a three-aisled basilica with two towers. It was founded after 1193 and completed in 1232. The building combines two styles. The western part with its massive facade, the so-called westwerk, is Romanesque. From the level of the second floor, early Gothic follows with pointed arch windows and ribbed vaults.

The church is closely connected with the founder of the monastery, the blessed Hroznata. He was buried in front of the main altar. Veneration of him as a saint was shown in the monastery shortly after his death. In the fourteenth century, July 14th was celebrated as his feast day in both Teplá and Chotěšov. In 1793, the remains of his sister Vojslava were also transferred here. They originally rested in the church of the Chotěšov monastery, which was dissolved in 1782. In 1897, Pope Leo the Thirteenth beatified Hroznata. His body was then exhumed from the grave and placed on a side altar, which today serves as a reliquary.

In the thirteenth century, Prague Bishop Jan Druhý solemnly consecrated the church. King Václav the First personally participated in the ceremony along with many imperial nobles and envoys. In the second half of that century, Abbot Benedikt had a chapel of All Saints built to the south of the monastery entrance.

Later, the good relations of Abbot Zikmund with King Jiří z Poděbrad helped the monastery. The king confirmed the monastery's lands and privileges. During a time of new prosperity, damaged buildings were restored and the church received costly decoration, including silver statues of saints. In 1549, nearly the entire convent died of the plague, with only two monks surviving. Abbot Jan Kurz nevertheless opened a monastery school for twenty-four students a year later. He died in 1559 and was buried in the chapel of Saint Ursula. His tombstone is the only one visibly preserved in the church.

The interior was rebuilt at the beginning of the eighteenth century according to a design by Kryštof Dienzenhofer. The furnishings are predominantly Baroque. Wooden statues with white finish were created by Ignác František Platzer, and frescoes were painted by Eliáš Dollhopf. In front of the main altar is Hroznata's elevated tomb. In the north side chapel stands his cenotaph, that is to say a symbolic tombstone with a recumbent statue of Hroznata, with the god Chronos, a mourner, and two little angels. A Neo-Romanesque entrance portal was added in the nineties of the nineteenth century under Abbot Ambrose Alfred. It is decorated with statues of Saint Augustine, the blessed Hroznata, and Saint Norbert. In 2018, a general restoration of the church began.

These locations are ideal for extending your tour and deepening the history of the region.

For families with children, a visit to the Basilica is interesting thanks to the possibility of viewing medieval architecture and historical artifacts. It is possible to meet with various interpretation boards in the monastery area, which explain the history of the site and its importance. Children can see even small exhibitions, which are often located near the main church. 3. Chapel of All Saints (south of the Basilica) This small, but significant chapel is one of the oldest sacral structures in Tepla. Its simple Gothic architecture and connection with the monastery reveal a medieval spiritual atmosphere. Ideal for short rest between tours.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring In the Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary in Teplá there is a rare combination of silent magic and living nature. A bright and warm atmosphere from the outside and inside, when the windows light up with sunlight, creates a sense of calm and excitement. The inner space of the basilica, enriched with more visible frescoes, offers the opportunity to observe detailed artwork, which in spring appear even more pronounced. Outside, flowering trees and green meadows bring pleasant fragrance and color to the surroundings.

It is practically appropriate to find a visit in the first half of March, when the temperature is pleasant and the crowds are not yet as dense as in the main tourist season. Suitable clothing should include light but warm layers that are easily adapted to variable weather. It is also important to bring a hat or hat to protect from sunlight, and suitable shoes for possible wet terrain around the church. The entrance is usually open throughout the day at this time, but it is recommended to come before the afternoon hot hours.
