Machoňova pasáž is a remarkable house in Pardubice that connects the district of Karlovy Vary and the city centre. It was built in 1925 according to the project by Ladislav Machona and is famous for its light beige facades and distinctive balcony on the first floor.

This monument has a rich history, which dates back to the 16th century, when there was a house with a prayer house of the Union of Brotherhood. The estates at today's street on Justice belonged to the Brotherly Union, but King Ferdinand I confiscated them and assigned them to the local hospital. Later, the house and the land changed owners and in 1605 the blacksmith Zajíček had a blacksmith. After his death, his widow Catherine's house was inherited and later married to the blacksmith Henry Skřivánek. The house became the property of the Hogs and later the Pelicans.

In the 19th century the land was changed several times by the owners, but in 1917 the builders Antonín Kratochchčl and František Veselý bought it. They decided to build a new house here, but in the end they decided to build a "magnificent palace of the East." The project was commissioned by the architect Ladislav Machoný, who designed a five-storey house with a passage which had 28 shops, a basement restaurant and 26 apartments. However, the project was changed to 31 smaller flats to allow owners to obtain tax relief.

The construction was awarded in 1925 and costs amounted to CZK 1,600,000, of which CZK 160,000 was the price of the land. Civil Reserve in Česká Třebová in the amount of CZK 960 000 provided the mortgage for the construction. The passage was designed to connect the district of Karlovy Vary and the city centre and to connect the market and another passage to Smila Street. However, this part of the project was not implemented.

The facade of the house is complemented by four sculptures by Karel Dvořák - fisherman, textile man, carpenter and painter. Modern sculptures have come across a lack of understanding in the local press, but the Pardubas have been captivated by the great urban environment of the trade passage. Especially popular was Hofman's Coffee and Confectioner. The arch of the passage was decorated with a mural by A. V. Hltsky. The artistic ceramic decoration was performed by K. Pokorný and metal unloading and bars by V. Číek.

The original three-arm luminaires in the arcade were replaced by modern fluorescent lamps in the late '60s and' 70s. The original lamps were considered lost, but 23 pieces of original chandeliers were found in the basement of the house on 5 January 1989. The lights were handed over to the owner of the house at the time - the Pardubice Apartment. But it disappeared again in the early '90s.

Machoňova pasáž was declared a cultural monument in 1958. The property is currently owned by the Development Fund Pardubice a.s. In 1996 there was a competition for the reconstruction of the building won by architect Miroslav Petrán. The reconstruction work started at the beginning of 2011 and the opening ceremony was held on 5 April 2013. About 180 million Czech crowns were inserted into the reconstruction. Renovated premises offer shops, offices and apartments. There is also a parking lot for dozens of cars.

Machoňova pasáž is a remarkable house that connects the district of Karlovy Vary and the city centre. Its rich history dates back to the 16th century and its architecture is remarkable with its light beige facades and a distinctive balcony on the first floor. It's a place worth visiting so you can get to know its rich history and remarkable architecture.

Welcome. You're standing in front of one of the most important construction sites in this part of town. In front of your eyes is an impressive five-storey building with the name Machoňova pasáž in it. Feel the presence of this building on the pavement in the Green Suburb area. It's a place where history clashes with the daily movement of people. If you look around now, you will realize that this building is not just an ordinary house for housing or business. It's basically a living organism that acts as a link, like an invisible bridge that connects two different parts of your city. From one side you have the district of Karlovy Vary and from the other side the centre itself opens. This passage allows people to pass from one part to the next, creating a constant flow of life.

Now let's move forward in time and look at how this important entity came into being. To understand why this building looks like it is now, we must return to the early 1920s. The whole process began in 1924, when the first work started on the construction itself. It was a period when the city was undergoing major changes and the need for modern, functional spaces was evident. This whole ambitious project was prepared and led by the hands of a man whose name is absolutely vital to the architecture of this city. This man was Ladislav Machoň. It was his vision and his ability to inhale the building's unique character that allowed the building to be completed and collapsed in 1925. Machon wasn't just someone who drew lines on paper, he was a creator who understood how the building affects people's movement and how it fits into the environment.

Now pay attention to what you see right in front of you. Pay attention to the architecture that is so distinctive. Look at the facade of the house. Its light beige shade gives the whole building some ease and elegance, although it is a large, five-storey object. This coloured surface is very harmonious in the surrounding area and in different times of the day it can have slightly different types of light. Now, raise your eyes a little higher. Notice the very distinctive element that is on the first floor. It's a balcony. This element is not just an ordinary addition, but it is one of the main features that visually define this building and make it recognizable at first sight. This balcony attracts attention and gives the facade depth and dynamics. This whole space, this whole passage, is designed not only to be beautiful, but also useful to anyone who goes through it.

This building has had a very long and rich journey. Its importance for the city was so great that already in 1958 it was officially declared a cultural monument. This means that its value is not only in the material from which it is built, but in its importance to the whole company. Although there are no famous personalities in the history of this particular house that live in it, its history is deep and fascinating. You might be surprised that even though the construction you are currently observing dates back to 1925, its roots and history of this place go much further back to the past, until the sixteenth century. This means that under your feet, in the very soil on which this passage stands, there is a history that is much older than it may seem. This connection between the old world and modern architecture from the early 20th century is something you feel in this place.

Age passed, the building went through different stages of its life and had to face the challenges of time. One of the most important moments in recent history was 2013. This year there was a great event, when the building was reopened after a demanding and thorough reconstruction. This reconstruction was necessary in order to preserve the original idea of Ladislav Machoné and to enjoy another long life and serve other generations of people. Thanks to this repair today you can see the building in its today's, modified and cared-for form, which still maintains its historic spirit.

While you continue your journey, try to realize how important this passage is to the rhythm of the city. It's a meeting place, a passing place, a place where different neighborhoods connect. It's a place that has the hidden power of joining within it. Whether you are here as a visitor, or as a population that you like more, feel it as part of a larger story that is still written.

Thank you for stopping by and paying attention to this memory. Now you know much more about Machona's passage than you did a moment ago. We leave you now with your thoughts and the impression that this building has left in you. Please continue to explore the surroundings, walk through the passage and let the atmosphere of this city drift. We wish you a nice walk and many other interesting discoveries. Goodbye.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring: In spring this passage wakes up along with nature in the surroundings. The light is fine and does not shine, which beautifully highlights the historical details of the building. The atmosphere is fresh and full of new life. I recommend a visit around noon, when the light is most stable. Dress in layered clothes because the morning cold can quickly go into pleasant warmth.

Summer: During the summer months, the passage has the most life and the sun's rays penetrate deep into its corners. It is the time of the greatest attendance, so it is better to arrive early in the morning to avoid the greatest crowds and heat. It is ideal to choose light and breathable clothes. To capture the most beautiful flashes of light on the walls, choose the time just before noon.

Autumn: Autumn brings a golden and calmer mood to this part of town. Leaves falling on the pavement in the surroundings create a beautiful set and light is very warm and soft thanks to the low sun. It's the best time for a quiet observation of detail without a big rush. Prepare your coat or scarf, because in colder days there may be unpleasant drains in the passages.

Winter: In winter, the building is very cozy and quiet. The day is short and the light in the passage is rather muted, which gives the place a mystery. Due to lower temperatures, I recommend a visit in clear noon hours. The need for warm and waterproof shoes and a top layer of clothing is necessary, so that the cold does not spoil the experience of the tour.
