Městské lázně Mšeno is a recreational resort with a swimming pool located northwest of the Mzena centre in the Mělík district in the Central Bohemian region. The building was built in 1932 and represents a valuable example of art deco-style interwar architecture. He gained the monument protection thanks to his original setting in a forested rocky terrain.

The area was festively opened on 19 June 1932. It was created in a period of growing economic crisis, when the emphasis in Czechoslovakia was on developing public infrastructure and promoting a healthy lifestyle. The author of the building remains unknown, although the chosen style shows similarity with the creation of the architect Jan Kotěra, such as František Janda, Čeněk Vořík and Henry Freiwald. A direct inspiration for the project was the no longer existing Klánovická spa.

The central element is a ground-floor, horizontally designed building 53 meters long with two wings. In the interior there are cloakrooms, restaurants and bathroom facilities. The construction stands out with wooden details that underscore its connection with nature. Part of the swimming pool is a 50-metre swimming pool with two tower fountains in the art deco style. There is a square paddling pool for children in the western part of the complex. The equipment also includes 18 original benches from a combination of metal and wood.

The water in the swimming pool is powered directly from the rock spring of Søíbrník, which ensures its refreshing temperature even during hot summer months. The original park layout gradually replaced the new planting, which however maintained the characteristic appearance of the site. In 2017, the fence of the entire building was restored.

The spa is open to visitors in the summer season from June to August. The area is located near the protected landscape area of Kokořín and besides bathing also serves as a space for occasional cultural events.

Městské lázně Mšeno is a unique document of interwar architecture that sensitively links technical solutions to natural rocky environments. The visit offers the opportunity to become acquainted with the history of public recreation and to use refreshing water from the local spring in the authentic environment of the first republic.

Welcome to Msena. You are standing in a place that is absolutely exceptional in harmony and in how perfectly the human work intertwines with the wild beauty of nature. Before you go on your journey, stop for a moment and just feel the atmosphere surrounding you. Look around you. See those tall trees that protect you from the sun and create this green, cold harbor? Feel the rocky landscape that is so typical of this area. It is in this wooded and indented terrain that the city spa is hidden, which you now have right in front of you. This whole area seems to be always there, as if it were a natural part of these rocks and forests. Can you feel the peace and quiet that exists here? This is the first step towards actually enjoying this space.

Let us now return together in time and understand why this place was created. Almost a century ago, exactly in the year one thousand nine hundred thirty-two, an important event took place here. It was a period between two world wars, a time when people became more interested in healthy lifestyle, movement and relaxation in nature. It was then that this swimming pool was built and ceremonially opened. The city of Mšeno then wanted to create a place where people could freshen up after proper rest or after working in nature and draw new forces. This area was not just a common swimming pool, but it became a symbol of modern access to recreation. Although many decades have passed since then and the world has not changed around us, this site has retained its importance. Even in the recent past, namely in the year two thousand and seventeen, there was an important renewal when the entire fence of the complex was modernized to keep this valuable place protected and safe for all visitors who want to find peace.

Now pay attention to what you see right in front of you, especially when you look at the buildings themselves and their shapes. This building is a rare and very valuable example of art deco architecture. If you don't know this term, imagine a style that is based on elegance, clean lines and certain geometric balances. It's a style that was very modern and noble at the time. Notice how the whole building is sensitively planted in this rocky and wooded terrain. The architects at the time did not want to overpower nature, but rather to work with it so that the buildings would not look like foreign bodies, but as part of the landscape. Look at the details you can see. Note the wood elements you find here. The wood gives the whole area warmth and nature, which perfectly matches the surrounding forest. And if you go towards the pool, I'm sure you'll notice two turret fountains standing at the entrance to the water. These fountains are not only a functional part of the complex, but also serve as beautiful and distinctive architectural elements that welcome you by the water and give the whole place its unique character.

You may now wonder who was behind this masterpiece. Who were those people who came up with this vision in the year one thousand nine hundred thirty-two? Although we have not been able to maintain specific names of architects or builders, their presence here is felt at every step. Although their faces remain hidden in the fog of time, their thoughts and their feelings for beauty are still alive here. Every line, every piece of wood and every detail you see is proof of their work and their efforts to create something lasting and beautiful. It's fascinating how the work can tell such a strong story about its creators, even though we no longer know their names. You are standing before their legacy, which has survived for decades, and is still enchanting by its elegance.

And now, let me introduce you to something that is absolutely crucial to this area and what makes bathing here absolutely extraordinary. Imagine the purity and the incredible force of nature that is directly linked to this human work. The water in the 50-meter pool in front of you is not just ordinary water. Her trip to the pool is fascinating. The water is fed directly from a rock spring called Silver. Imagine the power the water flows through the cracks and stones before it reaches you. Thanks to this direct connection with the natural source, the pool water is always incredibly refreshing. While there are hot summer days out there, when the sun burns into the rocks and forests, the water from the Silver Star will bring you welcome cold and energy. It is a gift from the bottom of the country that ensures that bathing here will always be a pleasant and refreshing experience, no matter what the weather is like outside.

Now you have enough information to fully appreciate the beauty and importance of this place. The city spa in Mšena is not just a swimming pool, it is a living testimony of history, architecture and imintermediate connection with nature. Use this time for yourself. See the architecture, feel the atmosphere of art deco and let yourself be refreshed with water from the rock spring. Whether you choose to swim in the pool or just walk in the surrounding forest, I trust you will rest here and draw new strength. Thank you for choosing to visit this place and for having the opportunity to accompany us. We wish you a pleasant stay and beautiful moments in this unique area. Goodbye.

Tips for visitors

A warm summer season is ideal for visiting the spa, when you will enjoy the historic atmosphere of the outdoor swimming pool. Due to the popularity of the site we recommend to arrive in the morning when the area is quieter. For photographers, the best time is shortly after sunrise or before sunset, when soft light beautifully highlights geometric shapes and details of art deco architecture. Don't forget to pack your bathing suit, towel and sunscreen so you can enjoy the refreshment in the pool. If you travel with children, the resort offers plenty of space for games and relaxation, while the historical environment of the spa acts as a set of period films. The protected landscape area of Kokořín is situated in the immediate vicinity, which is interwoven with a network of paths suitable for hiking trips to rock formations and other natural attractions.
