Most Barikádníků Bridge

Most Barikádníků is an important road bridge in Prague spanning the Vltava River. It connects Holešovice with Holešovičky in Libeň and Troja. Opened in 1980, it replaced a structure built between 1926-1928. This modern bridge facilitates north-south traffic flow into central Prague from the D8 highway and Prosek radial roads.

The original Most Barikádníků was constructed between 1926 and 1928 as a reinforced concrete structure with four spans featuring triple arches, designed by architects Josef Chochol and František Mencl. It initially connected Argentinská ulice in Holešovice with Vychovatelná street in Libeň, accommodating tram traffic since January 17, 1936. However, increasing traffic demands and poor maintenance rendered the original structure inadequate by the mid-1970s.

The bridge's construction reflects significant periods in Czechoslovakia's history. The original was built during political changes following World War I, while its replacement opened under communist rule in 1980, a time marked by industrialization and urban development. In 1946, it was renamed Most Barikádníků to honor those who fought during the Prague Uprising.

Architecturally, the new bridge is a steel structure designed by Jiří Trnka and Petr Dobrovský. It features a continuous steel truss with bearings over the centers of old piers, spanning 46 meters from the left bank. This design replaced the earlier reinforced concrete structure due to its inability to meet modern traffic demands.

Throughout its history, Most Barikádníků has witnessed key events and curiosities. During its construction in the late 1920s, Czechoslovakia was navigating post-war political changes. The original bridge gained notoriety when architect Bedřich Feuerstein tragically ended his life by jumping from it in 1936. In the mid-20th century, it featured prominently in the Czech film "Němá barikáda," capturing its appearance during that era.

By 1975, traffic on the original Most Barikádníků ceased due to increasing demands and lack of maintenance. A provisional wooden bridge nicknamed 'Rámusák' temporarily handled traffic during the construction of the new structure. During economic hardships, homeless people occupied spaces within the original bridge's structure, highlighting its deteriorating condition.

Today, Most Barikádníků stands as a vital infrastructure element in Prague, facilitating efficient transportation across the Vltava River. Its strategic location near significant urban landmarks such as Troja Bridge and proximity to Prosek make it an essential part of the city's transport network.
