Občanská plovárna is a monument-protected classical building in Prague. It is located in Holešovice near Vltava, between the Czech Bridge and Edvard Beneš's waterfront. Originally, it served as a facility for public swimming pools with swimming pools on the waves. Today it acts as a multifunctional social space.

Instead of today's swimming pool, in 1600 was a large garden with the church of St. Michael. This area was donated by Marie Manriquezová de Lara to St. Clemente's Jesuit dorm. After the cancellation of the order, the garden was sold to František Bartoni in 1786. The first swimming pool in this location was established in 1811. It was founded by the Arnošt z Pfuolu Centurion to teach the army how to swim. This military swimming pool was probably the oldest in Austria at the time. But there was a separate Občanská plovárna because of the strife between soldiers and the public who swam together.

Občanská plovárna was opened on July 7, 1840. The building in the style of Classicism was designed by architect Josef Kranner. The object specific was that swimming pools were not built in the ground but sailed in the river on the vents. The building served as a necessary background. In 1876, dressing rooms and restaurants were added to the building, which refers to the date on the northeast front. Since 1869, the swimming pool was better accessible thanks to Rudolph's bridge.

In 1906 the Prague village purchased the swimming pool. It was first operated in its own direction and since 1924 it has been rented, for example, by the Amateur Swimming Club. As a swimming pool with swimming school the object served until the 1960s. Its demise was helped by cooling the Vltava water due to the construction of the Vltava cascade and the expansion of indoor pools.

After 1989, the use of the building changed. Since 1998, Czech Television has been shooting a talk show on the swimming pool with Mark Eben. In 1992 the city approved the lease of the company BIG-HAM, which subsequently rented the space to Royal Admiral Yacht Club for the operation of a luxury casino. There was also a luxury restaurant with Spearmint Rhino Gentlemen's Club, later renamed Restaurant & Music Club Občanská plovárna.

The building was damaged by floods in 2002. The subsequent reconstruction carried out by the tenant in 2003 and 2004 was criticised by the Civic Association Atelier for the Environment. It alerted the Ministry of Culture to the devastating nature of repairs. In connection with the operation of the casino, speculation on the operator's property connection with persons involved in the assassination of the owner of another Prague casino appeared in the media in 2004. This led to discussions on the safety and suitability of renting urban buildings for gambling.

Currently Občanská plovárna serves as a modern multifunctional event space for conferences, weddings and cultural events. The operator is the WOOD & Company investment group, which at the end of 2024 acquired a controlling stake in Big- Ham. The new owner announced his intention to invest in the sensitive reconstruction of the historical building in cooperation with the historical care and the town hall.

The building presents unique evidence of the development of public hygiene and recreation in Prague of the 19th century. It is a valuable architectural element of the waterfront, which is worth visiting while walking around the Strak Academy and the Chekhov Bridge.

Welcome to Holešovice. You are standing in front of a building with a fascinating story about water, health and the social life of old Prague. The Občanská plovárna stands before you. When you look at it today, you may perceive the atmosphere of a modern city, but let us try to go back in time together to understand the importance this place once meant to thousands of Prajans.

Let's first look at how this journey began. You may imagine that swimming was always fun, but at this point it was much more practical at first. The military swimming pool was established here in the year eight hundred eleven. The Arnošt z Pfuolu was behind its creation. At that time, it was mainly about teaching the army to swim because the ability to control the river was essential for the soldiers. Vltava was the main artery of the city, but also a dangerous place.

Over time, however, it has become clear that the need for swimming is not only a matter for soldiers, but for all citizens. And so came a major breakthrough. On July 7th, a thousand eight hundred and forty were opened by Občanská plovárna. It became a public swimming pool where ordinary people could go. Imagine the enthusiasm at that time when the Prague people could finally be legally and organically cooling in summer heat.

Now pay attention to the appearance of the building itself. Notice her style, which is called Classicism. It's a style that bets on balance, purity of lines, and a certain grandeur. The architect who designed this look was Josef Kranner. When you examine the facade, you realize that this building basically served as a background. That's the most interesting detail you could miss today. People used to change and relax in the building, but swimming itself didn't happen in the concrete pool, as we are used to today.

Try looking towards the Vltava River now. Imagine huge rafts floating in that water. The swimming pools were located on these winds. It was a brilliant solution to your time. People came out of the building, entered the water on a floating structure, and they could swim there. The swimming pool was in direct contact with the river, but at the same time separated the swimming from the currents and dirt.

As time passed, the swimming pool grew along with the city. In the year a thousand eight hundred seventy six restaurants and dresses were added to make the visitors more comfortable. Swimming has become a social event. People didn't just spend time here practicing, but also talking and having lunch together. In the year one thousand nine hundred and six, the swimming pool was purchased by the Prague Association, which confirmed its irreplaceable importance for the whole city.

Interesting personalities are also associated with this place. In addition to the already mentioned Centurion Arnost of Pfuol, who started here, names like Marie Manriquezová de Lara or Marek Eben appear in connection with the swimming pool. They are figures that form a wider mosaic of the history of this space and its surroundings.

Now I want to take you to one of the real interesting things that may sound incredible. When you see this building today and the surrounding urban development, it's hard to imagine that in the year of a thousand and six hundred, long before the swimming pool, there was a large garden in this place. Imagine the contrast. Where the classicist building stands today, and where the boats with swimming pools used to sail, there once flowered trees and spread out green at a time when Prague was much smaller.

Občanská plovárna was an important centre of recreation and swimming lessons until the 1960s. It was an era where swimming in the river was the peak of the summer season. With the advancing time, however, time changed, modern pools with filtration arose and floating rafts in the river stopped being practical and hygienic standards.

You won't find swimmers in swimsuits or chlorine in the building today. The building has adapted to new times. At present, the area serves as a casino and the place where television shows are filmed. It's a fascinating transformation of functions. From military teaching to public swimming pools to modern entertainment and media. Yet the box itself, the Classicist building, is a witness to history.

Now, if you look at the building again, think of it as a bridge between centuries. You see in it a mirror of social development. From the need to survive in the river, to the desire for health and hygiene, to today's need for fun.

I wish you, looking at this object, to keep an idea of the floating winds on the Vltava and the sounds of the thousands of people who were coming here in the summer days to escape the heat of the streets of Prague.

This concludes a short stop at the Civic Floater. I invite you to explore Holešovice and their hidden corners. We wish you a pleasant continuation of your trip to Prague. Goodbye.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is late afternoon, when the sun gently illuminates the Classicist facade of the building and is reflected in the river surface. Transport to Holešovice is possible by car and public connections; Check the specific routes and connections in the maps.

To visit we recommend taking comfortable shoes for walks along the waterfront and camera. Since it is a building in operation, we recommend to respect the quiet in the space and focus on external architecture.

For the best photos we recommend an angle from the waterfront that captures the building together with Vltava. The ideal light is during the golden hour before sunset, when the colors of the building are most saturated.

During a short walk in the surroundings you can visit the Chekhov Bridge, Rudolph's footbridge or Strak Academy. All these places are located close to the swimming pool.

For families with children it is ideal to combine a view of the historic building with a walk to the river Vltava, where children can observe the current of water and surrounding architecture.

Seasonal recommendations

In spring, the surrounding area of the building is awakening to life and green in Holešovice. Soft spring light hits the facade and creates a pleasant atmosphere for walks. We recommend shoes suitable for wet and light jacket, the best time to observe architecture from the outside is in the morning.

Summer brings intense sun and hot air, which typically accompanies urban spaces. The building is very fresh in this period due to the proximity of water and the surrounding shadows. It is advisable to choose light, breathable clothes and visit the place in late afternoon when temperatures are more tolerable.

In autumn, the surrounding leaves are colored in golden and brown tones, creating a nostalgic framework for the sight of the memory. The atmosphere is calmer and light becomes golden and mild. It's practical to have a waterproof coat and plan a visit until the first dark falls soon.

Zimą dominates the space of cold and often grey sky, which highlights the cramped character of urban development. In advent time, the surroundings can be lit up and appear more cosy despite the cold. Hot clothes, clothing layering and solid winter shoes are essential, with the most details of the facade excel on a clear winter day.
