Obchodní dům Breda in Opava is a monument to modern architecture from 1927-1928, which was the largest department store in Czechoslovakia at the time. It is located in the heart of the city and represents an important example of functionalism with American inspiration.

The history of the building dates back to 1898, but the current form was created in 1927-1928. The contractor was David Weinstein, owner of Breda & Weinstein. They invited Viennese architect Leopold Bauer, native of Silesian Krnov and professor of the Academy there. The building maintained its first place of business in the Ostrava region until the 1960s.

The monument stands at the crossroads of Olbrichov, Krnovská and Olomoucká, close to the public transport stop and Hotel Koruna. Architecture is strongly inspired by the work of American architect Louis H. Sullivan. It's a corner building with a flat roof, five above and two underground floors. The construction consists of a reinforced concrete skeleton filled with masonry. The ground floor is divided by pillars with display boxes, upper floors are set with rectangular windows. The top of the building closes the lunette ledge with broken arches and circular windows on the fifth floor. The main facade has twelve axes, while the west ten.

The heart of the building is a glass hall with a wooden two-arm staircase leading under the dome with radial ribs filled with luxers. The second floor contains an open gallery with a parapet and the top of the dome is a rosetta with a geometric circle.

The building changed its name several times: in 1945 it became a pioneer, later a Prior and in 1989 it returned to its original name Breda. In 1994, the Opava entrepreneur Kamil Kolek bought it with Breda Holding for CZK 45 million, which was 35 million lower than the original price negotiated at the Ministry of Industry under the direction of Vladimir Dlouhý.

The building burned down in 2004 and was closed in 2012 despite partial reconstruction. Breda Holding failed, which led to the destruction of the building. A group of local enthusiasts led by Linda Bitt and Kurt Gebauer came to his rescue. Through the crowdfunding collection they obtained more than half a million crowns for rescue work and organized tours of the monument protected building. The tradition of Christmas lighting the facade was restored in November 2021 after 17 years.

In December 2021, the town of Opava approved the purchase of a building for 40 million crowns. In 2023, the facade was repaired and 170 dilapidated shutters were replaced with replicas. The total cost of the planned reconstruction is estimated at CZK 300 million. The project provides for a market, community centre and commercial premises in two of six floors. The remaining floors will be dedicated to galleries, namely the African collections of Jiří Blata and cooperation with the Institute of Fine Photography. The plans also include an exhibition dedicated to the Opava writer Joy Adamson.

Obchodní dům Breda is a unique witness to interwar modernity and business expansion in Czechoslovakia. Its rescue prepares the return of the architectural gem to the centre of Opava, which is also behind the visit in terms of its design history.

Welcome to Opava. You're standing right in front of Breda's famous department store. Raise your head and look before you at this vast structure, which, despite the fated fates and ongoing rescue work, still radiates its former nobility. Feel the massive mass of a building that occupies a large part of the street, and try to imagine what it must have been like for people in the late 1920s. You are now at a monument that has written the history of not only our city, but of the state.

Let us return together in time to a time when something quite extraordinary began to form here. The year was nineteen hundred twenty-seven when the construction of this current department store began. The business owner David Weinstein, the owner of a successful company who wanted to build something really big, was behind this grand plan. He wanted to create space for the people to match the best shopping temples abroad. That's why he invited the great Viennese architect Leopold Bauer to cooperate. Together they created a construction work that grew from nineteen hundred twenty-seven to nineteen twenty-eight as the largest department store in Czechoslovakia at the time.

Now pay attention to the architecture itself. Look at the clean lines and overall arrangement of the facade. The construction is an important example of modern architecture with clear and unmistakable inspiration from the great overseas style from behind the ocean. Architect Leopold Bauer designed the building to combine efficiency with representative appearance. Note how the various parts of the construction work harmoniously, although the object has passed many difficult tests over the decades. The town of Opava has recently started the rescue and reconstruction process. If you look carefully at the façade and windows, you will see the results of recent work from the year 23, when there has been extensive repair and replacement of hundreds of shutters, which help to restore this architectural jewel its original dignity and protect it from further decay.

With this place are the fates of many interesting people who made up history or left their mark. In addition to David Weinstein and the brilliant architect Leopold Bauer, history has touched a number of other personalities over the years. For example, remember Kamil Kolk, Linda Bitt, Kurt Gebauer, George Blat, or Joy Adamson. Each of these faces in its own way illustrates the varied cultural and social life that belonged to this place and still belonged.

Let's now take a look at some of the attractions of the moved chronicle of this building. Obchodní dům Breda has undergone a dramatic development. After World War II, exactly in nineteenth hundred forty-five, it was renamed and the building was named Pioneer's Business House. Under that name, many decades worked before the nineteenth hundred and eighty-nine people returned to the original and proud name of Breda. Unfortunately, history has not always been merciful. A huge blow was sustained by an object in the year 24, when a devastating fire hit the entire building. The hope of saving seemed to be fading. But the break came in twenty-one, when the town of Opava approved the purchase of the whole building into its hands and assumed full responsibility for its future. Thanks to this, we can stand before a repaired facade today and watch this symbol of commercial spirit and modern construction rise from the ashes.

Finally, I would like to thank you for the attention you have given to this story. Obchodní dům Breda in Opava remains, despite all the wounds of fate, a monument that is worth exploring. Take a moment of peace, go around the block of buildings, feel the atmosphere of the place and let the genius loci breathe on you, which persists here despite all the changes in time. I bid you farewell and wish you the rest of the day to discover the more treasures of our city.

Tips for visitors

A tour of the surrounding historical department store in Opava is best during the morning hours, when the sun illuminates the street facade and allows to capture architectural details of the original design of the Viennese builder. Transportation to the centre of Opava is possible by car and by public transport; We recommend checking the exact connection in the local connection search engine. Bring comfortable shoes for walking on the city pavement and camera. The best places to photograph a building in reconstruction are from the opposite pavement near the crossroads where the overall dimension of the historical building built in the 1920s stands out. In the immediate vicinity you can visit the town center of Opava or refresh yourself near the Hotel Koruna at the intersection of Olbrichova, Krnovská and Olomoucká. For families with children, this walk is suitable as an easy trip connected with the discovery of interwar architecture of the largest department store in Czechoslovakia.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring brings awakening nature and the rays of the sun penetrating the vast windows of the abandoned Breda department store, where the construction industry slightly revives ancient walls. The lighting is bright and sharp, which reveals layers of dust and the beauty of original architectural details. During this period, the first green shoots appear around the building and the atmosphere is full of silence and expectation. Since the building is located in the centre and construction works take place here, care must be taken; Solid shoes and clothes are recommended that can handle a little dirt. The best time to look at the facade is in the morning when the sun shines directly at the main entrance, with crowds of people around them being minimal because the tourist season is just beginning.

During the summer, the sun burns into large glass surfaces and the inner spaces warm rapidly, creating a specific, almost greenhouse climate. The light is sharp and throws long shadows through broken or covered windows while the surrounding streets live the busy urban life of the main season. It is preferable to choose early morning hours for the tour of the exterior, when temperatures are not as high and the streets are quiet. Due to the ongoing reconstruction and warm weather, choose light, but solid clothes, headgear and plenty of fluids, as the shade is around the monument and the crowds of curious bystanders can be the largest.

The autumn season covers Opava in foggy haze and early sherry, which gives the facade of the historic department store melancholy and mysterious touch. The lighting is muted, the colors of nature in the surrounding parks pass into brown and yellow tones, and the atmosphere is calm, sometimes almost frowny. In these months it is more often drizzle and damp, so it is necessary to wear a waterproof jacket, warm layers and firm non-slip shoes for leaves and building dust on the sidewalks. The ideal time for visiting is around noon, when the fog retreats and daylight provides the best conditions for observing architectural details, while the number of people in the surroundings is radically decreasing.

Winter brings cold, snow showers and very early dimming into the city, returning the whole place to a raw and lonely face. The light is grey, it is reflected from any snow cover and the interior of the building without heating is freezing, while workers work only to a limited extent. Very warm winter clothes, hats, gloves and tight shoes for outdoor tours are essential. The best time is the early afternoon before dark, when you can see at least something from daylight, and because in advent time people are rather hurrying for shopping elsewhere, you will almost be alone at this monument.
