Havířov is a statutory city in the Karviná District, in historical Cieszyn Silesia. It lies between Ostrava and Český Těšín, in the foothills of the Beskids, and the Lučina River flows through it. It is often called the youngest town in Czechia: it became a town in its own right on 4 December 1955, formed from parts of Šenov, Šumbark and Dolní Bludovice. Construction began in the late 1940s, because the mines and ironworks of the Ostrava region needed housing for their workers. The 1950s core is built in the Socialist Realist style known as sorela and has been under heritage protection since 1992. The town also includes older villages such as Bludovice, Suchá and Životice, where a memorial commemorates 36 men and boys from Životice and the surrounding area who were shot by the Nazis in August 1944. Around 67,000 people live here.
