Památník Petra Bezruče, also known as the statue of Peter Bezruč, is an exterior cultural monument in Dvořák orchards in the village of Opava. This sculpture was revealed in 1967 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birth of an important poet and a native of Opava. The memorial is open to the public all year round.

The creation of the work was initiated by the Municipal National Committee Opava, which was the main investor of the project. The formal unveiling took place on September 16, 1967. Historically, the project falls into the period of political easing in Czechoslovakia, when culture focused on reminiscing of important personalities of national history and literature.

The author's collective consisted of sculptors Jaroslava Lukešová-Kýnová, Vladimír Kýn and Jan Benetka. The central element is a bronze statue of a poet sitting on a granite plinth. He has a short coat thrown over his shoulders, a left leaning against the base and a right lying freely in his lap. The visual rendering uses contrast between the smooth surface of bronze and rough-worked stone.

The composition includes seven granite stones placed around the statue. They carry texts and motifs inspired by poems from the collection of Silesian songs. The four stones on the left resembles the works of Maryčka Magdonová with the symbol of the heart, Ostrava with the motif of a hand with a hammer, Swan and Opava with a city emblem. Three stones on the right refers to poems just once with the motif of flowers, I with my hand clenched in fist and 70,000 where the emblem of the city of Teschen is depicted.

The monument is now an important cultural element of the city and is part of the educational trail of the city parks Opava. Thanks to the location in the centre and free accessibility, it allows direct contact with the link of Petr Bezruč in the public park environment. The visit offers the opportunity to become acquainted with the connection of sculpture art and Czech literature in the context of the 1960s.

Welcome to the beautiful Dvorak orchards, one of the most important green spaces in this city. Right now, when you put your headphones on and you stopped, you're in a place that carries a profound link to the history and soul of the entire region. Before your eyes is a monument that is not just an ordinary work of art, but a living reminder of a man whose words shaped the identity of the whole Silesia. Look at this monument to Peter Bezruč. Feel the atmosphere of peace that exists in these orchards, and let your eyes look slowly around this neighborhood of bronze and stone.

The first thing your eyes are likely to catch is the strong and present figure of a sitting man. It's a bronze statue of a poet who looks very human and also noble. Notice its position. Petr Bezruč does not sit here in an unnatural, steep pose, but is captured in a moment that acts almost as a rest after a long and challenging journey. Look at his shoulders. He's got a short coat thrown over them, which gives the whole character some informality and depth. It's like you're seeing an artist sitting in a park for a while thinking about his verses. This bronze figure stands on a solid, stable granite plinth that gives it dignity and solid foundation in this urban environment.

But now pay attention to something else. Before you look at the statue itself, try to look around it. Notice the seven stones surrounding the main work. They're pieces of granite, but they're not ordinary, smooth-polished stones. On the contrary, they are roughly worked blocks which have preserved their raw, natural texture. And here lies one of the greatest treasures of this work of art. Notice the amazing contrast that the creators deliberately used. On one side you have a smooth, fine and detailed surface of bronze that captures the human form and fabric of clothing. On the other hand, you have those rough, unprepared and hard granite stones. This conflict between the finesse of the human spirit and the relentless force of nature is a very strong expression.

But these seven stones are not just decoration. If you approach them, you can see texts and motifs that are key to this place. They are inspired by his most famous creation, namely the collection of Silesian Song. These stones seem to tell stories that the poet has lived and carved into the soul of his people. Every stone is like a fragment of memory that takes you deeper into the world of his poetry.

Let us now return to why this monument is even standing here. To understand its meaning, we must return in time. Petr Bezruč was a man of immense importance to this region. He was born here, in Opava, in the year one thousand eight hundred sixty-seven. He was a poet who became a national artist because he could vote for people and their feelings. To honor his memory in this city with dignity, this monument was revealed in a thousand nine hundred sixty-seven. It was a very important event because it was at that time that they celebrated the 100th anniversary of his birth. So this whole work was created as a gift to the city and to the people as part of this great jubilee celebration.

Behind this artistic representation is a group of capable creators who were able to combine architecture and sculpture into one whole. They were called Jaroslava Lukešová-Kýnová, Vladimír Kýn and Jan Benetka. Their joint work created a space that is not just a static object but a place where history meets the present.

You may be interested in the fact that this monument is not just an isolated artwork in the park. In the year two thousand, this space was officially included in the educational path that connects various urban parks in Opava. This means that this monument is one of the important points on the road that will guide you through the beauty and history of our city. It's part of a wider story that spreads under your feet and around you.

If you look at the statue again, try to imagine the man sitting here. Imagine the power of his words and the weight of his thoughts. This monument is not just about bronze and granite. It's about how art can preserve a human soul for future generations. It's about how the roughness of stone and the softness of metal can come together to create something that makes us stop and think.

I hope this brief moment at the Peter Bezruč Memorial has reached out to you and that you found something interesting in it. Before you go on your walk with these beautiful Dvorak orchards, stop for a moment. Just look, feel the light breaking on the bronze figure, and listen to the silence of this place. I wish you a beautiful and inspiring journey along these paths and I hope that the next experience in our city will surprise you equally admirably. Goodbye.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is during the morning or at sunset, when soft light highlights the details of the sculpture and creates interesting shadows in the surrounding green Dvořák orchards.

It is ideal for photographers to take advantage of the autumn season, when falling leaves in parks give the monument a melancholy atmosphere corresponding to the legacy of the poet, or spring, when the surrounding flowering trees form a natural background.

The place is easily accessible by walking from the center of Opava. If you come from a larger distance, take public transportation to the centre and walk the rest of the way through a pleasant walk through the park.

Children can run freely in adjacent Dvořák orchards while you look at the work of art and learn the history of the poet.

In the immediate vicinity we recommend visiting the educational trail of the town parks Opava, which offers a pleasant route for the pawns, or continuing to discover the historical center of Opava, which is just a few minutes' walk from the monument.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring: In spring the surroundings of the monument are painted in fresh green and the first flowers bloom, creating a fresh and energetic atmosphere. The light at this time is soft and pleasant to observe the details of the monument. I recommend wearing layered clothes because morning temperatures can still be low. The best time to visit is in the morning when the air is the cleanest.

Summer: In the summer months, the space around the monument is surrounded by thick leaves, which offers a refreshing shadow during hot days. The sun shines strongly and creates significant light effects on the surface of the statue. It is advisable to wear light and breathable clothes and carry water. The best is to come in the late afternoon when the heat is milder.

Autumn: Autumn brings golden and brown shades of leaves to Opava, which gives the place a calm and melancholy mood. Often, the surrounding area can be covered with morning fog, which highlights the shape of the monument. It is important to prepare waterproof shoes and warmer layers of clothing for wet air. An ideal visit is when the sun shines lower to the horizon.

Winter: In winter there is a monument in the environment of bare branches and possibly under snow, which creates a rough and quiet atmosphere. The sky is often grey, but snow can highlight the monument beautifully. It is necessary to dress well in strong and wind-resistant layers and remember gloves. The best time to visit is around noon when the lights are most.
