Kroměříž Town Hall is a Renaissance corner building on the corner of the Great Square, Kovárský and Prusinov Street. It is one of the most important buildings in Kroměříži and still serves as a seat of the Municipal Office.

It was first written about its creation in 1572. In the form we know today, it already existed in 1593. The historical development of the city hall affected religious conflicts between Protestants and Catholics. This is also evidenced by the fact that in 1610, the Unichov priest Jan Sarkander was imprisoned here. In 1611 the building underwent modifications thanks to the financial assistance of Cardinal František of Dietrichštejn.

The building is characterized by a 40-metre high town hall tower, standing in the axis of the front facing the square. The tower ends with a stone gallery and a lantern. Under the gallery there are massive clock figures from the 17th century; The upper one shows the clock and lower minutes. In the central part of the tower is placed a coat of arms. The building also has an arch, which was rebuilt in extensive reconstruction in 1963.

The city hall's fate was influenced mainly by wars and reconstructions. In 1643, the building suffered considerable damage in the Swedish invasion under the direction of General Torstenson. The building was burned down and the city archive burned down; the repairs were completed by 1654. Significant changes were made by Bishop Karel II. z Lichtejštejna-Kastelkornu, as evidenced by the coat of arms from 1668. In 1850, there was a significant change of use - the city council moved to Generalhaus, while the city hall was based in the county capital and court. During this reconstruction, the third floor was built into the attics, the facade was modified and the carved pattern measurements of elbows and grooves were abolished.

The City Hall Tower has also performed a security function in the past. There used to be accommodation for the noblemen and kids who guarded the city before the fire. There was a bell on the tower called the pirglok, which gave daily signs to close the shellhouses. The tower was originally equipped with a double dial, which in 1691 measured the time for both the clock and the polo.

Today, the town hall serves as the seat of the city council, mayor, vice-mayors and several trade unions (e.g. financial, legal or tourism). The building is also a place of weddings and other social events. In the lobby there is a commemorative plaque with the names of Kromeriz citizens who fell as victims of World War II.

The historical nature of the building and its architectural details make it an important point in the tour of the city. City Hall is an authentic witness to Kroměříž history and deserves the attention of every visitor.

Welcome to the beautiful city of Kroměříž. Right now, listening to this voice, you're standing in one of the most important and important places in this historic city. Look around you. You are in the Grand Square, in his very heart. And right in front of your eyes, on the very corner of this vast space, there is an impressive and dignified building. It's City Hall. This building is not just a wall, a roof or windows. He's a living witness for centuries who shaped the lives of all the people who went through this square, traded here or sought protection here. Feel the atmosphere of a place where great history meets the daily life of the city. This building that you are now observing has its own fascinating story that began to be written a long time ago.

Let us now look together deeper into the past, until this building began to form into what you now perceive. Even though it may seem eternal and immutable to us, its present Renaissance form, which you see, began to fade back in the year 15 hundred and ninety-three. This means that this architecture has been standing here for over four centuries, watching patiently changes in the world, coming and going governments and changing the fate of people. In the history of this town hall, two very important men whose names are engraved in this stone play a crucial role. The first one is Cardinal František z Dietrichštejna. In the year sixteen hundred and eleven, this powerful personality decided to financially support city hall modifications. His contribution was not just an aid but a vital impulse that allowed the building to gain its distinctive appearance. Thanks to his decision, the City Hall could have undergone a transformation that made her such an important building.

Now pay attention to the architecture itself and to what you're seeing right now. It's a corner building, which means its location on the corner of the square is not random at all. It is this corner that gives the building its specific shape and gives it a sense of dominance over the whole space around it. It's a Renaissance work, which you can tell by its balance and style, which was so highly appreciated at the time. Now, please look up high. You see that tall town hall tower? It is the most important element that draws the view to the sky. This tower is over 40 meters tall. At the time the town hall was being edited, the tower was not just fulfilling the aesthetic role or the time notification function. It was a key part of urban defense. This high tower served as an observer so that people could see the potential danger in time and protect the people of the city from attack. It's a symbol of safety and vigilance.

Now, if you look at other details, you can see how much a powerful government and a church have entered this building. In 16 hundred and sixty-eight here Bishop Charles the second of Lichtejn-Castelkorn had planted a coat of arms. This tablet is not just an ornament, it is proof of the importance the city had at that time and how closely it was linked to powerful generations and religious leaders. This building has always been the seat of a city office, a place where decisions were made on matters important to all citizens.

But the history of this place isn't just about building modifications, money or powerful people. It is also the history of human suffering and deep religious conflicts that were tearing the country apart at that time. Imagine now the year 16 hundred and ten. A man named Jan Sarkander was imprisoned in these premises, in this building. He was an alien vicar whose fate became part of a much greater drama. At that time, there were very tense and painful conflicts between Protestants and Catholics. The town hall was not only the headquarters of the administration of the city, but also a place where different views of faith clashed and human destinies were broken in religious disputes. This story gives this building depth and reminds us that every wall has real human lives and their struggles behind it.

If you look at that tall tower again, try to realize how important it was to the security of the whole area. The 40-meter height wasn't just for beauty or to be seen from a distance. It was a guard who never slept. This tower was a silent guardian who watched the horizon and protected the lives of people living in this city. It's a fascinating idea of how much people relied on this one high point in their protection.

I hope this brief insight into City Hall's history has helped you better understand this place and its meaning. Kroměříž Town Hall is not just a building on the corner of the square, it is the heart of the city, which carries traces of Renaissance beauty, traces of powerful bishops and traces of human suffering. It's a place that must fascinate you with its history and its presence. Continue to walk on the Grand Square and let yourself be carried away by the beauty of this city. Every building you see around you has its own story waiting to be revealed. Thank you for your attention and I wish you a pleasant further discovery of all the secrets Kroměříže.
