Radnice ve Žlebech is a monument-protected neo-gothic building on Castle Square No. 12 in Kutná Hora district. The building was built in 1881 by rebuilding the original mansion. It is important by its romantic rendition, which follows in style the modifications of the nearby Žleb castle.

The building originally served as a manor house located at the Lower Gate. In 1881, according to the design of the then purkmaster Emil Šel was rebuilt for the needs of the municipal administration. This move reflected the period trend of the second half of the 19th century. In Czech countries, Gothic and Renaissance forms for representative public buildings were often used in the context of historism, highlighting national identity and historical continuity.

The building is a one-story five-axis construction of a rectangular plan with a saddle roof and is not undercut. The facade is dominated by a protruding pointy portal, located on the right. A cordon ledge separates the ground floor from the floor. On the floor there are four distinct combined windows with a central column, the mantelpiece of which is shaped by two Gothic rib tips. Six decorative headers are placed above these windows without supporting columns. The whole building is decorated with cimburia on the shield and atics. The side shield is also equipped with neo-gothic toothing, broken halves and colored by the Czech lion. The ground floor interior consists of two rooms encapsulated with segmental vaults, while the floor is flat-ceiling. In the direction of the Doubrava River, the building has a narrow terrace.

The object owner is the village Žleby. Since 1958, the building has been registered as a monument protected building. In the past the town hall served its purpose, later its premises used the local library and rental apartment. However, given the limited capacity, the building has ceased to meet the needs of the municipal authority.

By 2025, the town hall is unused and is in a fading state. Nevertheless, it remains an important evidence of neo-gothic architecture in the region. Visiting Castle Square in Žleby offers the opportunity to see this historical object in close proximity to the rectory and river Doubrava. Visitors can appreciate architectural details that refer to the romantic spirit of the 19th century.

Welcome to the Clam, a place where history whispers its stories in every corner. Right now, you're standing in Castle Square, and there's a building in front of you that immediately attracts attention with its appearance. It's a former town hall, a building that carries a fascinating contrast between its former representative glory and its current silent decline. The first impression that radiates from it is deeply romantic. It's a house that looks like it fell out of fairy tales or a historical novel about knights and castles. Feel its silhouette, which is drawn against the sky, and try to imagine what this place looked like over a century ago, when the heart of the municipal administration was warm here and things were important to all the inhabitants of Žleb. Now let's go back in time together to understand how this building came to be. What you're seeing today hasn't been city hall since the beginning. About a thousand and eight hundred years later, this building was a manor house that was located at the Lower Gate. The manor house was at the time a symbol of a certain status and power, but with the advancing time and changes in the needs of the village, the city has proved to need space that is more functional and also representative for the administration of the village. About a year came a thousand eight hundred eighty-one, which became a turning point for this building. It was this year that a major reconstruction started, which was aimed at turning the old manor house into a modern, then very fashionable town hall. Now pay attention to the architecture itself, because it contains the biggest secret of this building. The building is carried out in a neo-gothic style. If you're not sure what that means, look carefully up. Novogotics was a direction that returned in the nineteenth century to the elements of medieval construction, but interpreted them in a new, romantic way. Notice the upper part of the building. You see those distinctive battlements on the shield? These dental endings, which we see as decorative today, were originally used on the walls of the castles to defend themselves so that the shooters could hide. Here, however, they are used as an aesthetic element that gives the building a proud and castle-like look. Also look at the attics, the decorative wall above the ledge, which ends with the upper edge of the facade. This whole look was chosen deliberately. The architectural solution of the town hall follows in style the modifications of the nearby castle, creating a harmonious whole in the square space. The whole town thus gained a united, noble character. When we think about the creation of this building, we cannot ignore one key person. His name was Emil Šel. He was a man with an extraordinary combined talent. Emil Šel was not only an architect who designed this reconstruction, but was also a purkmaster at the time, the mayor of Žleb. Imagine what a combination of power and creative insight it was. The magistrate who rules the city is also drawing plans for the building where his office will be based. So Emil Šel could bring exactly what he wanted for his village. He wanted the city hall to be proud, romantic, and complete the surroundings with its form. Thanks to his vision, the ordinary manor house at the gate became one of the most distinctive buildings in the area. But now let us stop and think about the present. There's a sad paradox. The building, which was officially listed in the list of protected buildings in the year one thousand nine hundred fifty-eight, is now in critical condition. If you look closer at the details of the facade and the overall state of the object, you will see that time and lack of care have done their part. In the year two thousand twenty-five, this town hall is unused and decaying. It's like a silent witness to the forgotten era. It is fascinating and at the same time freezing to see how the construction, which was supposed to be a symbol of stability and administration of the village, is slowly becoming a ruin. This ruin, however, gives the building a special, melancholy atmosphere that you will not find in newly renovated buildings. It is a reminder that nothing is eternal and that even the most representative buildings can be forgotten once there is no one to watch over them. The interesting thing that may interest you is the original manor house at the Lower Gate. Imagine that underneath that neo-gothic beauty, under those battlements and decorative attics, there's still the core of the older building. It's basically architecture in architecture. The new Gothic coat of a thousand eight hundred and eighty-one was worn over the older body of the house to match the tastes and ambitions of Master Shel. It's kind of like a mask that changed the identity of a building from a simple house to a dignified city hall. If we could see through the walls, we would probably find traces of much older construction that accompanied us to today's form. This building teaches us that history is not just about dates and names, but about feelings and visions. Emil Šel wanted to create something beautiful to link the city to its castle. He succeeded, and even though the building is fading today, we still feel the original intention. It's a place where the ambition of the nineteenth century meets the reality of today. Now that you've looked at the city hall and learned of its fate, I suggest you slowly separate yourself from this melancholy building and continue to explore the Deed. Look around you, perceive the atmosphere of Castle Square and try to search other houses for similar details that might suggest the history of this place. Perhaps your steps will lead you to the castle the City Hall was trying to approach in its style. Thank you for stopping by with me on this fascinating, albeit a little sad occasion today. I hope this short trip to history has helped you see more than just old walls in this building. I wish you a pleasant further walk and many new discoveries in our beautiful city. Goodbye.

Tips for visitors

The most suitable morning for visiting the exterior of the town hall is when the sun illuminates the facade of the building on Castle Square, which highlights the neo-gothic architectural details. For photography we recommend using wide-angle lens to capture the entire representative building in the context of the surrounding square. In the vicinity you can visit nearby castle Žleby, walk along the river Doubrava or visit the historical local rectory. We recommend families with children to join a tour of the square with a nature walk around the river, which offers a quiet environment outside the main road moves.

Seasonal recommendations

In the spring around the town hall blooms and fresh greenery creates a pleasant contrast with worn walls. The atmosphere is full of hope and the morning sun lights the facade gently. I recommend you take a light jacket and visit the place in the morning when the air is the cleanest.

The summer season brings sharp light and deep shadows that highlight the details of the building's state. Around the town hall is thick green and the air is shaken with heat. The best time is a late afternoon when the sun no longer burns. Light, breathable clothes are suitable.

The surroundings are painted in gold and brown tones, which underlines the melancholy appearance of the emergency building. The frequent fog gives the place mystery. It is advisable to choose waterproof shoes and a warm sweater. The ideal is a visit around noon to make enough daylight.

In winter, the snowy snow will dampen all sounds and the grey facade will stand out in the white landscape. The atmosphere is steep and freezing. Due to low temperatures I recommend very warm clothes and a short stay around the building. It's best to come at the time of the highest sun.
