Rotunda svatého Longina v Praze Chapel

Rotunda svatého Longina v Praze is one of four preserved Prague Romanesque Rotund. Located on the street Na Rybníček in New Town and belongs to the oldest sights of the city. Built at the beginning of the 12th century, it served as a parish church for the village of Rybček. Its history is rich and variable, from Romanesque roots to baroque adjustments to the current liturgical use of Greek churches. Today, the chapel serves as a place for acaphists every Monday from 20 am and hosts the annual folk festival Rotunda, making it an attractive place for visitors.

The origin of the rotunda can be dated to the beginning of the 12th century when it was originally dedicated to St. Stephen. In 1257 there was a change in the dedication of the chapel in honor of St. Longin, which related to Charles's acquisition of the Reich of the Holy Spear and the subsequent rise in the popularity of this saint. At the end of the 10th century, the village was first mentioned, which highlights the long history of the place. In the middle of the 14th century a new church of St. Stephen was built near the rotunda, which replaced the original building as a parish centre.

Architecturally, the rotunda is characterized by its Romanesque structure with a higher cylindrical ship, a sealed dome and a lower eastern apside. The masonry of the ship is composed of alternately large sandstone blocks and leech blocks, which adds a unique look to the construction. The main ship is lit by Romanesque slot window on the south side and the original portal was located north of the current entrance. In the 17th to 18th centuries, there was baroque adjustment, adding lantern on top and wooden altar retabels. The Gothic window in the apside is another element of later intervention.

The history of rotunda is full of changes in owners and purposes. In the 17th to 18th centuries, the chapel was baroque, reflecting the usual trends of the time. In 1783 it was abolished for religious purposes and served as a warehouse. In 1844, a liturgical function was restored, indicating its lasting importance to the local community. František Palacký and the Society of the National Museum played a key role in preserving the construction in the 19th century when it was threatened by demolition.
