Sousoší Panny Marie (Kladno) Sculptural group
The Marian sculpture on Mayor Paul's Square in Kladno is a significant Baroque monument. It was created by the cargo of the abbot Benn Löbla in March and broum. The architect Kilián Ignác Dientzenhofer and sculptor Karel Josef Hiernle worked together. This sculpture is one of the most artistic monuments of the late Baroque in the Czech Republic and forms part of the complex set of the Kladno Baroque.
The history of the object is closely linked to the Benedict Order that worked in Kladno. Originally, there was a pond in the middle of which St. John Nepomucký stood on the pillar. Abbot Benno Löbl decided to transform the space and built a monumental sculpture dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The foundation stone was laid on July 22, 1741 in the presence of Abbot and architect Kilian Ignác Dientzenhofer. The ceremonial act was accompanied by procession and sound of field pipes and drums. The construction was preceded by the transfer of a duster which stood in the way and was a symbol of city law.
The architectural design of the three-stroke plinth was developed by Kilián Ignác Dientzenhofer, Johann Baumgartner from the Old Town of Prague oversaw stonework. The sandstone from the quarry near Kamenné Žehrovice was used for the implementation. The sculpture was created by Karel Josef Hiernle, which has been working on the work since 1740. The whole monument is conceived at three horizontal levels. The lower part consists of four reliefs representing Jesus' family: Saint Anne, St. Jachy, St. Joseph and St. John the Baptist. The latter is dedicated to the Benedict saints, namely Saint Benedict, Saint Prokop, Saint Ben and Saint Jan Nepomuk. The peak consists of a statue of the Virgin Mary, Immaculata, with twelve stars around her head.
The monastery of St and Broum remains the owner of the monument. Over the centuries, the work has undergone several repairs. A significant recovery took place in 1873 when a metal rail was probably installed. After the crash in 1979 Antonín Kolář and František Pashek restored the monument, which replaced some of the damaged sculptures. The last restoration took place between 2001 and 2002 under the leadership of Michael Bílek. Only part of Hiernl's original work was preserved in situ, including Saint Benedict, St. Benn, a pair of angels and four reliefs. The original statue of St. John Nepomuk is today stored in the building of the town hall.
The interesting thing is that the price for making sculptures, according to tradition, was approximately equal to the year of its creation, i.e. 1740 gold. An example model of 60 centimeters was created in 1739 or 1740 and was exhibited at many shows of Czech Baroque abroad. The inscription cartouche in the monument contains chronograms that refer to 1740.
Today, the sculpture represents a rare proof of top Baroque sculpture. Together with the Chapel of St. Florian and the Benedict residence, it is the historical core of Kladen Baroque architecture. Visiting this place offers the opportunity to become acquainted with the artistic legacy of the Benedict Order and to see one of the most valuable monuments in Kladno.

Welcome to Kladno, a place full of history and beauty, where you are now in front of one of the most famous baroque works in our region. Under your feet, Mayor Paul's square is spread out, but your attention is undoubtedly beholden to the three-story sculpture of the Virgin Mary, which stands as an eternal witness to the past. This formidable passageway complex consists of a scepter that carries the statues of the Virgin Mary, Benedict saints and angels, all conjured into incredible detail. As you look up, you might think you see an exact image of the past as the sun reflected on his face.
The sculpture was created thanks to the efforts of the abbot Benn Löbla in March and Broum. In 1739 a sample model was completed, which served as a basis for further work. Already in the following year the sculptures work began under the direction of K. J. Hiernle. And when the foundation stone was laid in 1741, the city saw the beginning of this monumental work. The architect Kilián Ignác Dientzenhofer played an important role, who dedicated his artistic skills to this very place.
Let's take a closer look at the details. It is clear to us that the three-stroke sculpture, each level of which brings new motifs and decorations. Note how the statues are placed so that they appear in the air, which gives the whole piece a feeling of lightness and beauty. The architectural design of Dientzenhofer is clearly visible here in harmony and balance of elements.
The interesting thing about this place is that the whole pond was originally located on the site of the sculpture. In the midst of him stood on the pillar of St. John Nepomukki. It was therefore necessary to remove this duster before construction in order to build a new Baroque monument. This change brought one of his most important monuments to Kladno.
As great visitors, you should not draw attention from these historical personalities who participated in the creation of sculpture. Abbot Benno Löbl, architect Dientzenhofer and sculptor Hiernle are essential parts of this work.
So the invitation to further explore is the entire Kladno. The city offers many other attractions and beautiful sights that you should not miss. I hope you have managed to recognize the statue of the Virgin Mary as one of the most important parts of our cultural heritage. And now you can relax and enjoy the next moments of your journey on Kladno. Let me say goodbye to this place with a special friendship.
Tips for visitors
To visit the sculpture is ideal morning or evening, when the square is quieter and the sun creates plastic shadows on baroque details. The best time for photographers is shortly after sunrise, when the light is soft and does not illuminate the statue too sharply from the perspective. In the immediate vicinity of the sculpture is the chapel of St. Florian and the building of the Benedict residence with the chapel of St. Vavríce, which forms with the monument a complete historical whole suitable for walking.
