Sousoší svatého Jana a svatého Pavla Statue
The Baroque sandstone sculpture of St. John and St. Paul from 1745 is located on the road connecting the village of Medlešice with the village of Jøenice in the district of Chrudim. It is a protected cultural monument, probably made in the workshop of sculptor Karl A. Dewoty.
Created at the time of the high baroque in Bohemia, when the Habsburgs and the Catholic Church had a strong influence on cultural life, the development of sacral and rural sculptures concentrated.
The whole object is made of sandstone and lies on a low pedestal with an convex forehead and a seared top profile. On it there is a pole whose sides are decorated with volutes and the upper part is closed by a molded ledge. The convex forehead of the column carries a decorative cartouche with embossed coat of arms - the sign of the genus Vernier on the right and the sign of the genus Caretto de Millesimo on the left. There is another low base on the ledge of the pillar on which the sculpture itself stands. Both simple-haired saints are depicted in an erected position with their heads raised to the sky, dressed in a garment with a short skirt and a flattened upper cloak.
On the side of the column is carved inscription with chronogram 1795 or 1797, suggesting later modification. In the past, the sculptures' heads were damaged, but they were subsequently supplemented.
Since 1958, the sculpture has been registered as a real-estate cultural monument of the Czech Republic and continues to serve as a religious element in the landscape between Medlešice and Jøenice.
This Baroque work represents a valuable example of outdoor sacral art from the mid-18th century and is worth a visit to discover historical details in the Chrudim district.

Seasonal recommendations
In the spring, the statue comes to life with a fresh green and fine light to highlight the details of the stone. The atmosphere is full of hope and a new beginning. We recommend wearing more layers of clothing because the weather is variable. The best time to visit is in the morning, when peace and air are still fresh.
The summer season brings sharp sun and rich colors that create strong shadows on the statues. The air is hot and the city is live. To avoid the biggest crowds of tourists and burning heat, come to the monument first thing in the morning. Don't forget the light summer clothes and enough fluid to drink.
Autumn covers the memory with golden leaves and misty wounds, which gives the place a mysterious and a little melancholy touch. Light is softer at this time and more pleasant to look at. Due to frequent collisions, it is advisable to carry a waterproof coat or umbrella. An ideal visit in the afternoon.
In winter, the sculpture is very sober, especially if it is covered with snow, which creates a beautiful contrast to a darker stone. There is peace and quiet. It is necessary to choose warm winter clothes and solid shoes due to frost. Visit the place around noon when the most daylight is.
