The Old Town Hall in Český Broda, located on the Square of Arnošt of Pardubice, is a monument protected Gothic building with subsequent reconstruction. This historic building, which boasts a single-storey structure and the main facade towards the southwest, is important not only by its architecture, but also by its rich history. Its oldest part dates from 1379- 1396, which makes it one of the oldest town hall buildings in the Czech Republic.

The creation of the Old Town Hall is linked to the time when the Czech Kingdom was undergoing political and religious changes. The oldest part of the building was probably founded under the Prague Archbishop John of Jenštejn, which suggests its importance for local government and the religious sphere. This building served as the seat of the highest authority of the city administration, which underlines its central role in the life of the Czech Brod people.

The town hall is mainly a Gothic building that has undergone several phases of reconstruction. After the initial Gothic foundation, the Renaissance reconstruction took place in 1547. The Thirty Years' War had a devastating impact on the region, and in 1639 the city was completely destroyed by the Swedes. After three years of desolation, the town hall was restored, probably already in the Baroque style. Another fire in 1739 led to its top Baroque reconstruction between 1741 and 1743.

The building boasts a one-story construction with a nine-axis front. The entrance portal allows access to the central corridor, which was ambushed and ended with a massive three-part staircase to the floor. On the piedestal is a statue of the mythological Gryf by architect and sculptor Jan Koula from 1884, which adds artistic value to its historical significance. Two rooms in the facade are arched with vaulted vaults with sections, while the storey spaces are mostly flat-ceiling.

The ownership and administration of the city hall have changed over the years. The pharmacy U Jitřenky was located in the building from 1800 to 1837, indicating its multifunctional use. Since 1850, the district court has based c. K., and since 1868, the county government in the town hall, highlighting its administrative role.

Key events in City Hall history include not only its reconstruction, but also its adaptation to cultural purposes. Since 1960, the building has been used as a room for the City Library, Information Centre, Shatlava Gallery and CuKratkov Café. Part of the historical underground is accessible to the public, allowing visitors to explore its rich past.

Today, the Old Town Hall in Český Broda is not only a protected object, but also a living cultural centre. Its historical architecture and rich history make it an attractive destination for tourists and locals. Visiting this town hall offers a unique view of the past of Český Brod and its development, which makes it not only a monument but also a living witness to history.

Welcome to the historical heart of Český Brod, where you are standing in front of one of the most important architectural works in this area - Old Town Hall. This monument-protected Gothic building awaits you with a long history and many stories that are still waiting for their moment to be told.

Take a look up to the one-story structure with the main face facing southwest. This part of the building can remind you of the elegant line of Gothic architecture that is characteristic of this period. In the town square of Arnošta of Pardubice, where the town hall is located, you will enjoy a sense of immersion into the past and an atmosphere full of historical spirit.

Let's move forward in time. The old town hall was built in the 14th century, between 1379 and 1396. Its probable founder is Jan of Jenstejn, the Prague Archbishop, who played a key role in its beginning. This building was an important centre for the administration and life activities of the city of Český Brod.

Now pay attention to the individual architectural details that you will notice. The area is closed by a fenced wall with a niche chapel, where the statue of St. John Nepomucký is located. This chapel has been protected as a monument since 2014 and is a key element for understanding the historical importance of this place.

The Old Town Hall has a rich history, which includes a Renaissance reconstruction in 1547. This period brought new elements into the original Gothic structure and gave it a unique character.

The interesting thing is that the Old Town Hall became a protected monument in 1996. This status highlights its historical and cultural value for the Czech Republic. It is one of the oldest town hall buildings in the territory, which makes it a key place to understand urban history.

By inviting you to further explore, I encourage you to pass this monument and enjoy its atmosphere. Every stone has a story waiting to be told. May you enjoy your walk around the Square of Arnošt of Pardubice and enjoy every moment you spend among these historic walls.

Thank you for your visit to Old Town Hall in Český Broda. I hope they have learned many interesting things and that you will remember this memory as a noble example of Czech history.

Tips for visitors

For the best visual experience we recommend a visit in the period when light is soft, for example early morning or at sunset, which will highlight the Gothic details of the construction. The seasons like spring or autumn offer a pleasant environment for observing architecture from the surrounding streets.

Transport to city hall is possible both by personal means of transport and by public transport. For current information about connections and travel, please check online search engines.

When visiting, it is recommended to take only the necessary things with you and choose comfortable shoes for walks around the square.

For families with children, walking around the historical core of the city is interesting thanks to the possibility of observing ancient buildings directly from the pavement.

If you are interested in photography, the best places for pictures are near the building itself. From various positions on the square you can capture the entire facade of the town hall and its historic atmosphere in different light conditions.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring brings fresh greenery and fine morning light to the surroundings of the town hall, which highlight the details of the facade. The atmosphere is full of expectations and awakening nature. I recommend visiting the place in the morning when the air is the cleanest. Due to the variable weather, it is best to choose layered clothes and comfortable shoes.

In the summer months, the building is dominated by bright sun and rich colors of the surrounding area. Shadows are deep, which creates interesting contrasts for observing architecture. The best time is early morning or late evening time to avoid the greatest heat. Light, breathable substances and sun protection headgear are ideal.

The autumn season is characterised by golden leaves and frequent fog that surround the town hall with a mysterious mood. The light is softer and golden, which is ideal for the perception of the historical character of the construction. It's practical to have a waterproof jacket and a warm shawl with you because temperatures are beginning to drop sharply.

Winter time offers contrast between cold air and warm atmosphere in the advent season. The snow can cover the building beautifully and highlight its shapes in short days. I recommend a visit before dark when the city lights are on. Hot winter clothes, gloves and firm braces are essential.
