Sudoměř is a extinct medieval fortress in Strakonice district, a situation in the same-name village near Čejetice. The building is probably from the 14th century. Today, the terrain remains of fortifications and foundations on which the later grafted construction is built. The area is protected as a cultural monument.

The fortress was probably built in the 14th century. The construction of similar aristocratic settlements at that time discouraged political changes, the cultural development of medieval feudalism and the growing power of noble families in Bohemia.

The original building design of the fortress is no longer fully preserved. In the northern part of the complex you can see the terrain remains of fortifications in the form of ditches and waves. The 1967 archaeological surveys revealed the foundation of the stone wall. In the 18th century a grafted building was built on the original wall, which is now part of the house No. 15. The current three-part estate includes a semi-grafted residential building and two wings of farm buildings with a gate on the east side.

The first documented resident was Čadek ze Sudoměře in 1318, which served Wilhelm of Strakonice. He was followed by the son of Janek, mentioned in 1329, and the brother of Přídouj; they both held the church functions of canons. During this period the genus was divided into branches of Řepice and Girls from Sudoměře. At the end of the 14th century the fortress was owned by Nedamir and then Hynek of Sudoměře. Before the middle of the 15th century, the object went into the hands of flags from Hracholusk.

In 1491, the Mikuláš a Ctibor z Hracholusk brothers sold the whole farm to Kaspar Robmháp from Suché for 1,200 kicks of Prague grosches. The farm included a fortress, a sailing yard, part of the river Otava, ponds, pool White water and mill. After the period of ownership of Kaspar's sons, of which the estate consolidated Václav in 1519, in 1524 the farm was exchanged with Kryštof from Švamberk for Rataj. Under the administration of the family of Švamberk chateaux began to decay. In 1544 Jindřich starší ze Švamberka had a village with a courtyard and already a desolate fortress written into the earth's plates. In later reports from the 16th century, the object is only mentioned as a pilgrimage at the Kestrian estate.

Today, Sudoměř consists of the rest of the estate, which, by its history, resembles a former noble residence. Visitors can observe the trail of medieval fortification in the landscape and architecture of later grafted building. The monument represents valuable evidence of the transformation of the fort into an agricultural estate and is worth a visit to the history survey of Strakonice County.

Welcome to the historic site Sudoměř Chateau, where we are located in the picturesque location of Čejetice. You are facing the remains of a medieval fortress whose conspicuous terrain tells a long and interesting history. You can see the scattered remains of the fortifications and the foundations of the former state that suggest the rich past of this place.

The fortress is probably from the 14th century when it was built as a fortress for protection and administration. At that time Sudoměř Chateau became an important part of the regional defence and administration system. Its creation is linked to the need to provide a safe haven for the local nobles who acted here as administrators and protectors.

Look up at the terrain remains of the fortifications. You see the remnants of the stone foundation, which today shows us the original appearance and architectural art of the time. These elements are key signs of the medieval fortress, whose strength was the basis for the defence capabilities of the then inhabitants.

Now pay attention to historical personalities associated with the Sudoměř Chateau. Among them were Čadek ze Sudoměře, Janek ze Sudoměře and Předvoj ze Sudoměře, who were important members of local nobility. Their names are listed in the history of this fort as its owners and administrators. There are also other important figures such as Kašpar Robmháp ze Suché or Jindřich starší ze Švamberka, making Sudoměř a place full of historical stories and family alliances.

The interesting thing about this place is uncovering the foundations of the stone wall in 1967. These archaeological findings provided valuable information on the original state and architectural details of the fortress. Today, when only the remains of the masonry are present, it is hard to imagine its former glory.

In 1491 there was a major historical event - the farmhouse was sold for 1 200 kicks of Prague grosses. This transaction shows the variable nature of property relations and economic conditions at that time.

Let's move on and explore other parts of the compound. Notice how the terrain talks about the rich history of Sudoměře and its importance in the past. Imagine the lives of the people who once inhabited this fort and the stories that took place here.

Thank you for your visit to Sudoměř Fortress. We hope you've taken some interesting insights into her history and stories. Don't forget to explore other surrounding areas of Čejetice and find more attractive places to discover. When we get you back, we'll be glad to see you again.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring: In spring, the ruin of the hardships in the Sudomorians awakens along with the surrounding vegetation. Fresh leaves and flowering trees create fine sets to explore stone remains. The light is soft in this period, which highlights the texture of the old stone. I suggest you come early in the morning to enjoy your peace and avoid the moisture that is often kept in the lowlands in spring days. Dress in more layers, because the morning cold can be surprising.

Summer: The summer season brings intense sunlight to the Bohemian, which literally warms the ruin. The high grass around the chateau creates a wild atmosphere, but it can be very hot in the morning. Due to the increased attendance in the main summer season, it is best to arrive immediately after opening to ensure a more peaceful space for the observation of ruins. Don't forget the headgear, plenty of fluids and comfortable shoes suitable for uneven terrain.

Autumn: Autumn around the hardness offers the most impressive visual experience thanks to the colour of leaves and fowls of the morning that cover the ruin with mystery. The atmosphere is nostalgic and quiet, ideal for lovers of history. At this time it is advisable to carry a waterproof jacket and shoes with good grip because wet stones and leaves can be slippery. The best time to visit is in the afternoon when the sun at a low angle creates long and dramatic shadows.

Winter: Winter visit reveals the raw beauty of stone skeletons without leaves. The landscape has a strong and peaceful effect, which underlines the historical weight of the place. Due to the shorter time of the day and lower temperatures, plan a visit around noon so that you don't expect a shadow. It is necessary to choose very warm clothes and quality gloves because the open space of the ruins does not provide any shelter from the wind and freeze.
