The Klokočín Fortress is a Renaissance monument at Protivína, located on the hill above the Blanice River. Originally it was built as a courtyard, which was extended in the middle of the 16th century to include a residential fortress. It is remarkable with graphite plaster, vaults and preserved layout of the complex.

The first written mention of Klokočín dates back to 1401. At that time, the court was part of the Mana system of Hluká Chateau. In the first decade of the 15th century it belonged to the brothers Hynka and Purkart of Klokočín. Later, manna's duty was transferred to Animal.

The core of the complex is a storey rectangular building with cross vaults on the ground floor and remains of letter sgraffiti on the facade. At the right angle, the ground wing connects to it. The area demarcates the wall with torsion stables and pigs, between which was the east gate. There's a barn in the south corner from the early 19th century. It preserved the traditional division of smudges and gingerbread and hand-carved hambalic plaid with standing stool. Valuable elements also include beam ceilings and brick or wide board floors.

Over the years, the owners often changed. After the Litochlib family, who had the court since 1510, Mikuláš Protivínský took it over from the Movement and his relatives Jaroslav and Beneš, one of whom was founded. Later, it was owned by Volf Hozlaur of Hozlau and Oldřich Želizko of Tour, who had the farm listed as single in the Earth's records. In 1595 it was bought by Jindřich Březský z Ploskovic, who repaired the monument. In 1615 Jan the elder Wroclaw of Mitrovich joined her to the antivine estate where she remained until 1924.

The history of the monument is accompanied by property disputes and confiscation. Petr Šant z Budičovic lost Klokočín in 1470 because without the permission of the sovereign, he recorded income from the court to various beneficiaries. King George of Poděbrad then handed it over to Peter Kaplíř of Sulevic. At a later time, the fort was desolate when its owner Oldřich Želízko of the Tour lived in the Vodňany.

In the second half of the 20th century, the Court served the needs of the single agricultural cooperative. Today, the entire complex is protected as a cultural monument.

Klokočín Chateau represents an authentic example of the Renaissance superstructure with unique architectural details. It is an important place for anyone interested in the history of the South Bohemian region.

Welcome to Klokočín Fortress. Right now, you're standing in a place where time has stopped and history is touching the present. In front of your eyes is a building that, despite its present appearance, carries deep traces of centuries. Before we go into detailed discovery, let yourself stand for a moment and perceive the atmosphere of this place. Look around you, on this hill, which strategically dominates the flow of the Blanice River. Feel the serenity that prevails here, and imagine how this view of the surrounding landscape worked hundreds of years ago for those who sought the safety and seat of their power here.

Let us now move further into the past together so that we can understand how this area was created. The first paper trail leading us to this place dates back to 1401. At the time, however, Klokcin did not yet look as you see him now. At that time it was mainly a simple courtyard, a place intended for agricultural purposes rather than for representative housing. The turning point for the face of this place was not until the mid-sixteenth century. It was at that time that a major reconstruction took place when the original courtyard was extended to a Renaissance residential building. This change has changed the character of the whole place - the simple economic background has become a true headquarters. This building served as a home for noble generations until the beginning of the seventeenth century, when the fate of Klokočín joined with a nearby city. In 1615, this complex was formally attached to the antivine estate, concluding one of the important chapters of its own existence.

Now pay attention to the architecture itself, which is right in front of you. Klokočín is an excellent example of the Renaissance monument. Although time and nature have left their marks on buildings, you can still perceive their original design and quality. If you look at the residential building, try to see the details. Its architecture is remarkable mainly because of its vaults, which provide interiors and spaces with a sense of stability and nobility. If you can see closer to the surface of the walls, you can see the sgraffiti plaster. This technique, which creates patterns by scratching into two layers of plaster of different colours, is a typical feature of Renaissance style and gives the building its unmistakable texture and richness. The whole area has retained its original availability, which allows us to better understand how people have moved between residential and economic parts of the residence in the past. The buildings are surrounded by a torsion of economic buildings and a fenced wall, which together form a closed whole, protected as a valuable cultural monument.

Every stone and every wall here can tell the stories of people who once lived here, decided and ruled. The history of Klokočín is interwoven with the names of prominent personalities. We can talk here, for example, about Hynek from Klokočín or Purkart from Klokočín, whose names have been linked to this place since its early beginning. Over the centuries, different owners took turns bringing new changes into place. In 1541, the Kangaroo court was sold to Peter Shant of Budičovice, one of those moments when today's Renaissance character began to be built. Later, in 1595, purchase of the fort was made by Jindřich Březský z Ploskovic, who took care of the building and paid for its repairs, thereby helping to preserve its importance. Other names such as Jindřich ze Švamberka or Jošt Kořenský z Terešova appear in the history of this place. Each of these men brought his own energy and influence to Klokočín, making this place the center of local administration and power.

Now that you're walking around the campus, you may find something less spectacular, but equally fascinating. Notice the economic buildings that were previously an integral part of this whole. One of the most interesting buildings is a barn dating back to the early nineteenth century. Although younger than the fortress itself, it is extremely valuable for its authenticity. If you look into it or examine it, you'll see that it has retained a very traditional division of the smashing and the pearls. This is proof of how the grain has been worked in the past and how agricultural work in this area has been organised. Another interesting element, which is evidenced by the manual work at the time and simple but functional technique, is also hand-carved. These details help us understand the everyday life that took place here far from the noble festivities, in the rhythm of hard work in the field and in the economy.

Klokočín is not just a set of buildings, it is a living witness to the transformation of the Czech countryside and the noble way of life. There is a connection between the living comfort of the Renaissance masters and the relentless work of the people who kept this court going. Every corner of this complex, from sgraft plaster to old wooden construction of economic buildings, has its own voice.

I hope this brief insight into the past inspired you to explore again. Don't go too fast, pay close attention to the details you've been seeing. Walk around the wall, feel the silence of this hill and let the atmosphere of this historic place consume you. Thank you for choosing to visit tvrz Klokočín. We wish you a pleasant further part of your journey and many other interesting discoveries. Goodbye.

Seasonal recommendations

In the spring the surroundings of the Klokočín fortress awaken to life and the new green vegetation creates fresh sets for walks. Light is soft in this period and very suitable for capturing the beauty of blooming nature. We recommend you take layered clothes because morning temperatures can still be cold, and prepare for any mud on the trail. It is best to visit the place in the morning when the air is the cleanest and there is the most calm.

Summer months bring to the area the most sunny weather and dense, rich green landscape. The atmosphere is lively and full of visitors looking for rest in nature. Due to the increased number of people it is advisable to arrive immediately after opening to ensure a more peaceful tour without large groups. Don't forget the high-quality headgear, plenty of fluids and light, breathable clothes.

Autumn is ideal for lovers of melancholy views, when leaves are colored in golden and red shades. The morning fog covering the ruins gives the place a special mystery. Fixed shoes are necessary for comfortable movement because wet leaves can be slippery. The ideal time to visit is in the afternoon when the sun shines at a lower angle and beautifully highlights the shapes of old walls.

In winter, the fortress is very raw and lonely between bare trees. A short day and a low sun create a sharp but fascinating light effect. It is necessary to prepare for a strong frost and wear a very warm layer of clothing. Always check the current opening hours, which are shortened during this period, before travelling, and plan your visit to avoid any earlier shear.
