Ústřední hřbitov v Brně, also known as Central, is the largest burial ground in the city and one of its most important historical monuments. Located in the cadastral area of Štýřice near Vienna Street, in the southern part of the Brno city centre. It was founded in 1883 according to the plan of architect Alois Prastorfer and is situated on an area of 43 hectares, making it the second largest cemetery in the Czech Republic. The cemetery is known for its historical value, architectural monuments such as a crematorium and an honorary burial ground of Soviet soldiers.

The establishment of the Central Cemetery in 1883 took place according to the plan of Alois Prastorfer. Originally, the plots for the cemetery were acquired by the city of Brno from the village of Horní Herspice, and the newly established cemetery became part of the cadastral territory of Staré Brno II. Over the years, the cemetery has been expanded several times, most recently by plots belonging originally to Bohunice, where a crematorium was created. The cemetery is enriched by various objects built over the years, such as the ceremonial hall from Bohuslav Fuchs (1924-1926) and the crematorium from Ernst Wiesner (1925-1930).

The architectural elements of the cemetery include different styles of the ages. New objects such as the ceremonial hall from Bohuslav Fuchs and the crematorium from Ernst Wiesner added to the original Prastorfer project. The ceremonial hall was built in the years 1924-1926 at the bottom of the cemetery near the entrance, while the crematorium won by Wiesner in the public architectural competition was completed in the years 1925-1930.

The cemetery is managed by a contribution organization of the City of Brno Cemetery Administration. During his existence he went through several extensions and changes that reflect his importance as a burial ground and monuments. Key events include the construction of an honorary burial ground for Soviet soldiers and other liberators of Brno in 1945-1946, which was declared a national cultural monument in 1989.

Today Ústřední hřbitov v Brně is a place with historical and cultural significance. It has around 80 000 grave sites where about 400 000 people were buried. The cemetery is also home to the honorary burial ground of Soviet soldiers and other foreign liberators of Brno, stressing its important role in the history of the city. For visitors, it offers the opportunity to explore the rich heritage and remember the personalities who rest here.

The central cemetery is not only a place of burial, but also a monument to history and culture. His visit offers a unique view of the history of Brno and its population. It is a place worth exploring for both historians and any curious tourist who want to better understand Brno's rich history and cultural heritage.

Welcome to section Štýřice. You are standing just outside the gates of the Central Cemetery in Brno, a place that the locals call very simply and popularly as the Centre. Imagine, right now, you're crossing the line between a noisy, hasty city and a space where there's peace, peace and deep contemplation. Feel this atmosphere that now surrounds you. It's a place where the great history of the city meets thousands of small, personal stories of people who have found their last rest here. You see a vast space in front of you, which is not just a burial ground, but basically a huge park of memory, where every alley and tombstone tell their own unique story of life and death.

Let us now look together at how this place was created and why it is so important for Brno. The central cemetery was founded in 1883. At that time, the city grew rapidly, and space needed to be created to meet the needs of the people and the expansion of the time. The whole complex was built according to a carefully thought-out plan by an architect named Alois Prastorfer. Imagine what kind of imagination he must have had when he was designing space that's now spread out on an area of forty-three hectares. To visualize it better, it's an area corresponding to dozens of football fields. It is this expansiveness that makes Central the second largest cemetery in the whole of the Czech Republic, giving you a clear idea of its immense importance and dimensions.

Now, as you slowly move forward, pay attention to the surroundings and the architecture that accompanies you. Even though there are thousands of graves, the cemetery is very important with its architectural monuments. Note the overall layout of the site, which is the result of the work of several important creators. In addition to Prastorfer's founder, Bohuslav Fuchse and Ernst Wiesner left their trail. One of the most significant buildings you can see on the premises is the crematorium. It is a building that, with its function and its appearance, represents a certain era and approach to goodbyes with loved ones, which at the time of its creation became a new standard.

Another very important and noble place you should not miss is the honorary burial ground of Soviet soldiers. This place is not just a grave, but a real monument that resembles tragic events and victims from the past. In 1989, this honorary burial ground was declared a national cultural monument, underlining its enormous historical and symbolic value for the whole of national history. Look at the facade of these buildings and see how architecture helps to show respect and memory to those who are no longer among us.

Once you go deeper into the grounds and walk between the rows of tombstones, I recommend you search for resting places for people who have influenced their surroundings by their work, science or art and have left a mark in time. One of them was Karel Absolon, who lived between 1877 and 1960. He was a truly extraordinary man who spent his whole life studying underground space and ancient finds. As a speleologist, he studied caves, and as an archaeologist, he uncovered the secrets of long-forgotten cultures. His work has helped us better understand the nature and history of our ancestors, and his presence here reminds us that curiosity and desire to know the truth are immortal.

Then you can think about the life of Arnold Josef, who lived from 1824 to 1887. He was an important Brno builder, a man who helped build the face of our city at the time of its greatest expansion. If you look at buildings in the centre of Brno, many of them can be hidden in a reflection of his work and vision. And don't forget to find the resting place of Milos Axman, who found his peace here in 1990. Miloš Axman was a respected sculptor and rector of the Academy of Fine Arts. Imagine the contrast between these personalities: a scientist exploring the depths of the earth, a builder forming a city and an artist forming stone and space. These people represent different disciplines of human activity, from science to craft to high art, and together form a spiritual map of this cemetery.

Perhaps now you'll find one interesting thing that makes this place more than a burial ground. Thanks to its vast area and variety of monuments, the Centre is basically an open gallery in the open air. It's fascinating to think about how customs, perception of death and the way we pay our respects to the dead have changed here in over a hundred years. The fact that this place is the second largest in the country means that you can watch art and aesthetics develop across decades. It is a silent testimony about how Brno changed and how the people who lived and created it changed.

While you're on the road, try to realize the strange contrast between the expansiveness of the entire area and the intimacy of one single grave. Forty-three hectares of space can be overwhelming, but at the same time they offer enough room for anyone seeking peace. It's a place where history doesn't write in books, but in stone and silence.

Now I leave you to explore these vast paths in peace and at your own pace. I recommend not to chase and be led by the atmosphere of this place. Feel the silence, observe the details on the tombstones and think about the people who rest here. Ústřední hřbitov v Brně is a place where time flows slower and where we can find space for our own thoughts, for gratitude and for sadness. It's a space that teaches us humility and reminds us that we are part of a much larger whole.

I wish you a peaceful, deep and inspirational walk around this extraordinary place. Let yourself be guided by memories and histories that still live here in every corner. Goodbye.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit the Central Cemetery in Brno is autumn or spring, where it is quieter and nature offers beautiful colors. This period also offers an ideal light for shooting historical tombs and monuments.

Parking can be found near the cemetery, but due to limited capacity we recommend using public transport. The best way to get here is a tram or a bus that brings you near the place.

When visiting the cemetery, wear clothes suitable for walking on the lawn and also a protective coat for winter. The important thing is to have water if you plan on spending this long.

The best places for photography are at old tombs and monuments, especially when the sun is directed through tree leaves. This effect creates beautiful shadows and adds atmosphere.

In the vicinity of the cemetery it is possible to visit the Styria Theatre, which is located in the same neighborhood. It is an ideal place for families with children to watch various performances and active programs.
