Vepice is an extinct medieval fortress from the 14th and 15th centuries. It was located on an island in the New pond near Kovářov in the county of Sand in South Bohemia. The capital of the Vepic family is today protected as a cultural monument.

The scene of the place is closely linked to the local family of the capital. The first documented member was Jaroslav z Vepic, who entered into a contract with the Milev monastery in 1373 and ended the dispute over the land border. It is assumed that the fort already existed at that time.

The fort probably stood on an island in the New pond with a circular plan of 15 metres in diameter and flat surface. Historical sources also give an alternative view. According to him, the object was located at the site of today's house number eight on the west edge of the pond. Medieval shards were found in both locations. On an island about 20 metres from the shore, a modern wooden cottage is today.

The seat of the government was linked to several personalities. In addition to Jaroslav, Burjan and Fraňek z Vepic were present here, mentioned in 1437 in the dissolution of the hereditary association of cancer flags. In 1382, Gertruda z Vepic defended the inheritance of its daughters after Father Mestich against Purcard's claims from Janovice. Other members of the family were Odolen z Vepic (mentioned in 1388 and 1412) and the brothers Odolen and Jan of Vepic, owners of the Melicharov Court in Kovařov, who died until 1465. The House died at the end of the 15th century, which led to the leaving of the fortress. In 1498 Vepice was already part of the March.

František z Vepic was an important figure of the genus, who was abbot of the Milevsky monastery in 1383-1404. During his period, the church of St. Gilji was completed, where two of František's coats of arms are still preserved. Interesting findings occurred in 1900 when cleaning the pond. At that time, treated oak beams, iron axes, spikes, arrows and shrapnel were pulled. These items are today stored in the National Museum in Prague.

Today's fortress is stealth and the original installation is not visible. Yet it is a place with a rich history of the local government. A visit to this protected area allows the landscape to observe the trace of the extinct medieval residence.

Welcome to the historic site Vepice, the extinct fortress that once stood on the island of the New Pond near Kovářov. You are standing in front of a place full of secrets and history where a quiet pond is spread around a small wooden cottage, which now serves home on the site of a once important fortress. Imagine how this place once resonated with the life and affairs of the Vepic family.

The fortress was the seat of a family called Vepice in the 14th and 15th centuries. Their story begins in 1373, when Jaroslav z Vepic entered into a contract with the Milev monastery. This fortress was not only the headquarters, but also the centre of local events and power struggles. Imagine how Gertruda z Vepic defended the legacy of its daughters in 1382, an example of their determination and influence.

The architecture of the fort was probably a circular plan with a diameter of about 15 meters. Even though there was nothing left of this old structure today, you could imagine its form and location on an island that is protected as a cultural monument.

Key personalities associated with Vepicemi include not only Jaroslav, but also other family members such as Burjan and Fraňek z Vepic. Their stories are full of rich events that have affected local history. The end of the 15th century was a decline for this family; The fortress was abandoned and the house fell apart.

The interesting thing about this place is the finding in 1900, when historical objects were discovered when cleaning the pond. These findings provide valuable information about the lives and times of these people.

Take a look at the surrounding environment, where a quiet pond covers what once was the seat of power. This place will welcome you through history and the silent sounds of the past. If you want to explore more, let yourself follow other paths around the pond and discover other local sights.

Thank you for your visit to Vepic and we hope you have taken an interesting impression of the history of this place. If you return, you will be welcome to explore Czech cultural heritage.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is spring and autumn months, when the landscape around the New pond is green or coloured and temperatures are welcoming for walks. In summer it may be hot by the water, while in winter access to the island is often limited or dangerous due to frozen pond or mud.

Access to the fort is only possible on foot because it is located on the island in the pond. By car you can only reach the shores of the New Pond near Kovářov, where it is appropriate to park on a grassy plot or by the road, if local conditions permit. Then continue on foot to the place where you can leave the island or see it from a distance.

Take with you fixed shoes that can handle mud and uneven terrain along the pond bank. We also recommend having enough drinking water and light refreshments, as there are no facilities, toilets or shops in the immediate vicinity of ruins.

For photography it is best to use the morning or evening light, which will beautifully highlight the atmosphere of ruins and sparks in the pond. The best views of the fort can be obtained from the shore of the pond, where you can capture the overall context of the island and the water surface. Observe that the sun is not in your eyes, if you are shooting towards sunset or sunrise.

Since there are no other specific sights to visit in the area, focus on a peaceful walk along the shores of the New Pond and observations of local fauna and flora. If you have children, remind them of the need to be careful with water and that it is not a maintained holiday place, but a historical location with natural terrain.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring: In spring, the ruins of Vepic awaken together with nature, which begins to green around the walls. The light is soft in this period and very suitable for shooting details of the old stone. I recommend wearing layered clothes because the morning cold can still feel, even when the sun is shining. It is an ideal time to visit, because there are so few tourists and there is peace.

Summer: In summer there is the most life but also the most heat. The dense vegetation around the fortress provides an occasional shadow, but the sun can be very strong. The best thing to do is to come first thing in the morning to avoid the biggest crowds and the midday heat. Don't forget the hat and enough water to enjoy the tour in peace.

Autumn: Autumn moons turn the surroundings into a sea of colors and give the ruins a melancholy touch. The morning fog surrounding the walls creates a magical atmosphere that the lovers of silence appreciate. It is important to have firm and waterproof shoes because the road can be slippery because of the rain. It is the best time for those who want to escape people and perceive the beauty of the aging monument.

Winter: The winter makes Vepice rough and inhospitable, especially when the trees are without leaves and the surrounding area is quiet. The grey sky and any snow highlight the emptiness and history of this place. Due to low temperatures it is necessary to have very warm clothes and come during the day when the most light is. Be careful of slippery stones and paths that can be dangerous in the cold.
