Vila Soví hrádek in Opava is a regionally unique example of architecture from the early 20th century. It combines elements of Art Nouveau, North German historism and British style cottage. The construction from 1904-1905 is located on the Kylešov Hill and since 1958 it has been officially protected by monuments.

The villa was built by Viktor Bartel, the son of the great Opava builder Augustus Bartel. The Bartel family had its family residence in the castle in Old Heřminov since the first half of the 18th century. The creation of the building coincides with the peak of the Art Nouveau in Europe. At the same time, a return to craftsmanship, which represented the British artistic craft movement, was advocated at that time. The Silesia region in this czasia developed modern housing for a rich middle class.

Architecturally, the villa is characterised by asymmetry that suppresses regularity and axis symmetry. The building stands free on the corner parcel. On her ground floor is a high paired stone suspect. A significant vertical element is the prism tower, which ends with a small cylindrical tower. On the level of the second floor there is a balcony with decoration of five stucco wreaths. The attic of the villa is done in a ravine.

His name was Owl Castle because of stony depiction of owls in the shield and above the main entrance. The Art Nouveau elements are not only stopped by the exterior, but are also projected into the interior. This decoration is particularly visible in the lobby.

The villa represents a unique synthesis of the various European architectural currents of its time. Its preservation and conservation status make it a valuable goal for anyone interested in the history of architecture in Opava.

Welcome to one of the most fascinating buildings in Opava. You are standing right in front of Villa Owl's castle, which, by its unusual appearance, certainly caught your eye at first sight. Stop for a moment, take a breath and let your eyes slowly discover the line of this house. In front of you is a building that looks more like a small castle from a fairy tale than an ordinary family house. It's where time stopped and where you can feel the atmosphere of the beginning of the last century.

Now let's move back more than a hundred years in time. We are in the year nine hundred and four when the first stone of this building was laid. At that time, the city was developing and this unique project was created on Kylešov Hill, where you are now located. The villa was built for a man named Viktor Bartel. Imagine what it must have been like in the year nine hundred and five, when the construction was completed, to enter this house for the first time and look at the surrounding landscape from its windows. It was a symbol for Victor Bartel of his status and taste, a place that was meant to be not only home, but also a distinctive architectural statement.

Now pay attention to the very form of the building. If you look at the overall composition, you'll notice that the house is not symmetrical. One side does not reflect the other, which creates a dynamic and playful impression. The architects whose names have been forgotten have joined several different styles here. Notice the elements of the Art Nouveau, which was at that time the peak of modernity and elegance. At the same time, you will find the influences of North German historism and elements typical of British cottages, making the villa a unique piece of architecture in our region.

Look up now. Your attention should not escape the significant vertical axis of the house. The dominant is the prism tower with a cimmer, which gives the building a castle character. And if you raise your eyes a little bit higher, you'll see a small cylindrical turret at the top of this tower. These are the elements that make Owl Castle's villa an unforgettable object. Feel how these vertical lines contradict the surrounding space and how the building communicates with the visitor with its asymmetry.

Speaking of personalities, the key name here is Viktor Bartel. Although we may not know all the details of his private life today, the very existence of this villa suggests his ambition and desire for something extraordinary. Bartel didn't just want to build a functional house, but a work that would stand out from a number of other buildings. This desire for uniqueness is encoded in every detail of the facade. It's fascinating to think how many generations of people have been around this house and how many stories have happened in its shadows.

And now we come to the most interesting part that gave the villa her poetic name. Look carefully at the building shield and then move your view to the main entrance. What do you see? This is where the stony images of the owls are located. These stone birds are the mysterious guardians of the house and they gave her the name of Owl's Castles. It's a detail that gives construction some depth and mystery. The owls are traditionally a symbol of wisdom and vigilance, which can be very symbolic of the home of a man who valued his privacy and aesthetics.

This combination of castle elements, such as cimburas and towers, together with the fineness of Art Nouveau details and the rustic charm of the British cottage, creates a whole that is virtually unfound in our region. This is proof of the courage of the then builders to experiment and combine influences from different corners of Europe into one harmonious whole. It is thanks to this uniqueness that the villa was officially declared a protected monument in the year nine hundred and fifty-eight. This means that the state has acknowledged its extraordinary value and decided to preserve it for future generations so that even you can stand before it today and admire its beauty.

Try now in your mind to imagine how the villa looked on the day of its completion over a century ago. What colors prevailed, how the gardens around it smelled and what sound accompanied visitors to these stone owls. It's a place that teaches us that architecture is not only about walls and roofs, but about the emotions and visions of the people who created it.

Imagine every part of this building telling its own story. From the foundations on the Kylešov Hill to the highest peak of the cylindrical tower. It's a story about ambition, the influence of foreign trends and the desire to create something that lasts centuries. Vila Soví hrádek remains as a silent witness to Opava's transformation and surroundings, as an island of elegance in changing time.

Now I'm leaving you to look at everything we talked about in peace. Look at the whole facade, look again at those little stone owls and feel the rhythm of the asymmetry of this house. Try to find your own favorite detail that interests you the most on this site. Maybe it'll be the combination of styles, or maybe a sense of peace that radiates from this place.

Thank you for exploring with me the beauty of Villa Owl's Castle. I hope this short trip to history has helped you better understand the uniqueness of this place. Now you can continue your journey and discover other hidden treasures of our city. I wish you a pleasant walk and many other beautiful experiences. Goodbye.

Seasonal recommendations

In spring the surroundings of the villa will awaken to bright colours and fresh flowers in the garden will highlight the details of the facade. We recommend a visit in the morning when the light is fine. Due to the variable weather, it is advisable to choose layered clothes and moisture resistant shoes.

Summer offers the longest days, thanks to which the construction can be observed in full sunlight, which will highlight architectural elements. It's best to come early in the morning or at dusk to avoid heat. Don't forget the light fabrics and the sun hat.

Autumn brings golden shades of leaves to Předměstí that create a nostalgic atmosphere around the house. The perfect time for an outside tour is this afternoon, when the low sun casts long shadows. A warm jacket and comfortable shoes are suitable for walking around.

Zimą operates a villa in a quiet and minimalist environment, possibly under a layer of snow, which gives it special peace. The tour is recommended in times when window lights are lit, which creates a cosy impression. Hot gloves, hats and a fat sweater are essential.
