The power plant Strž in Kroměříži is an important technical work built between 1920 and 1923 on the river Moravia. The building is registered in the Central List of Cultural Monuments of the Czech Republic under the number 101819. It represents a unique connection of pioneering energy technology with cultivated functionalist architecture.

The history of the place is closely related to the course, which has been feeding drives for mills since the 16th century and later served the needs of the Podzámecká Garden. In the past, Jez has repeatedly been the subject of disputes between the ecclesiastical dignitaries and the nobility, often damaging the Morava River. In 1841 Cardinal Maxmilian Josef Sommerau-Beckh had an expensive reconstruction carried out with the help of a group of pioneers, creating a more permanent work. Today, eat on the 114th river kilometre, which stabilizes the bottom, was built within the construction of a power plant and reaches a total height of 6.11 meters.

The construction of the power plant itself responded to the need for efficient use of hydropower in the first decades of the 20th century. The project, financed by the common costs of the state and the Moravian Regional Committee, took advantage of the revolutionary inventions of Dr Viktor Kaplan. After successful tests abroad and in Poděbrady, Kaplan turbines with circular wheels of 2,2 metres diameter were installed in Kroměříži. As a result, the power plant became one of the most modern energy facilities of its time. František Křižík was involved in the electrification of the building.

The architectural solution of the building, the authors of which are engineers Gustav Madlmayr and Karel Mikeš, combines technical efficiency with aesthetic rendering. The engine room is hidden in a classic cloak. Pilasters and half-circle arched windows of the lower wing resemble Renaissance gazes, while the upper wing uses elongated arcades of evocative Empire buildings. The building stands on the right bank of the river and has a wide drive equipped with leporims and rough jaws.

Since its launch in July 1923, the power plant has undergone significant changes. The most important was the installation of the third turbine in 1948. The ownership structure has changed over the years; Since 2016 the owner of Czech Hydro s.r.o. Power plant with installed output 2.8 MW remains a functional technical device.

There is a blue tourist route to the Club of Czech Tourists around the power plant, which runs from the Kromeriz railway station along the river Moravia in the direction of Chropyni. At the Minov bridge, this road crosses with a green sign leading to Kojetín. Thanks to its location by the river and proximity to natural monuments such as the Morava Shoulder, the locality is a sought-after destination.

Power plant The market represents a valuable document of technical progress and architectural invention of the first half of the 20th century. Visiting this place offers an opportunity to become familiar with the history of Czech energy in an environment that still maintains its aesthetic and functional value after 100 years.

Welcome to the Draj hydropower plant, one of the most important monuments of our region. You are standing in front of this impressive object, proud of its history and technological innovation. Look up at the high roofs and elegant line of the building, which proves that even then our ancestors were able to combine functionality with beauty.

The emergence of this power plant is closely linked to the early 20th century when new energy was needed for a rapidly industrializing country. The launch of the construction between 1920 and 1923 was a result of the decision to use the Morava River to generate electricity. Architects Gustav Madlmayr and Karel Mikeš presented a design that became one of the first modern energy works in our country.

Take a closer look at the architectural solution of the building. Note the classicising mantle which gives the object an elegant and efficient appearance. This style is a combination of technical function with aesthetics, which was a very modern approach for the time being.

The key person associated with this location is Viktor Kaplan, whose innovative turbines are still part of the power plant. These Kaplan turbines were pioneering at the time and marked significant progress in world technology. František Křižík, another distinguished historical personality, also contributed to the development of energy in our country.

One of the interesting things about this place is that since the 16th century several mills have been powered here. In 1841 the cardinal had the food repaired with the help of soldiers, which shows a long history of using this place for energy purposes.

Now, move around the entire building and look closer at the installations that represented the most modern technology at the time. Notice how the power plant still works today and energizes the local network.

Let's move on to the next part of our journey, but before we do, we'll invite you to explore more of this fascinating place. There are many other interesting and historical details that you might realize. We hope that your visit to the Draj hydropower plant will be interesting and illuminating for you. Goodbye and thank you for your attention!

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is during spring or autumn months, when the level of the river Morava is calm and the surrounding green creates a picturesque stage for observing technical architecture. At these times the light is softer and ideal for capturing details of the historical building.

For photography we recommend using the morning clock when the sun lights the front of the power plant from the east. The best pictures are taken from the river bank, where the connection of technical work with surrounding nature stands out. The building is interesting with its history and pioneering use of turbines, which will be especially appreciated by lovers of technical monuments.

When planning a trip with children, take advantage of the proximity of Podzamecká Garden, which offers space for walking and rest in the green. The road to the power plant is easy and suitable for family trips, where you can bring the principles of producing energy from water to children.

In the vicinity of the power plant there is a bishopric brewery and mint, which complement the historical character of the city Kroměříže. We recommend to combine a tour of the technical monument with a visit to these places, which are easily accessible by walking from the power plant.

On the way, pack comfortable shoes suitable for movement near the water stream and telescope, which allows you to explore the details of the construction and observe life on the river Moravia.
