vozovna Hloubětín Other
The Hloubětín is one of the eight tram roads of Prague Transport Company. Located in Prague 9. It was opened in 1951 and is one of the youngest in the Prague network. It serves for maintenance and shutdown of vehicles, including modern article trams.
Construction plans existed before World War II. The implementation took place in 1951 in the early days of the socialist regime, when extensive construction of transport infrastructure took place in Prague. The Wagon in Hloubětín replaced the objects in Karlín and Libni. Before the Central Workshops were put into operation in Hostivar there were repairs of T-type cars.
From the point of view of architecture, the roof of the weaning hall was dealt with as a thin-wall concrete shell. This solution was chosen to save steel which was insufficient material at the time. The building is managed by the Prague Transport Company.
The entrance to the road yard was originally in its southeast corner of Kbel Street. The handling line that made the object accessible from the north (from the current Kolben street and then New Hloubětín loop) and from the south (from Podebrad street and Old Hloubětín loop) led through this way. Regular lines used this line until 1976 when the line was built on the Líhovec. In 1986 the line was transferred west of the road station due to the construction of the road circuit in Kbelské Street. The entrance subsequently moved to the southwest corner of the building. Since the late 1980s, KT8D5 cars have been deposed here.
In 2013 there was a deflection of the shell roof construction. After monitoring and temporary reinsurance, it was found that the roof had reached its lifetime. Therefore, as of 15 January 2018, the hall ceased to be used. The wagons were subsequently unloaded in a rail harp, in other roadways or since April 2019 temporarily in the area of Tram Repair. On 24 August 2019, the original roof structure was removed by blast and the whole building was demolished.
From 2020 to 2021, a change room and an energocentre were built on the premises. In June 2022 a contract was signed to build a new weaning hall, the construction of which began in September of the same year. Since July 2019, the project has been under investigation by the National Headquarters against organised crime on suspicion of a crime, but this was terminated in 2021. The construction was completed in the spring of 2025 and on 21 March 2025 the reconstructed road was festively opened. The new hall has 22 tracks for 61 article trams of 32 metres. The hall of daily treatment and outdoor areas were also part of the modernization.
Currently, 31 Tatra KT8D5R.N2P cars, 16 Tatra T3M.2-DVC cars, 16 Tatra T3R.PLF cars, 73 Tatra T3R.P cars, and part of the training cars. In 2025, the first Škoda 52T cars were removed here.
The building is an important element of Prague transport infrastructure. It combines technical solutions from the early 1950s with modern 21st century standards. It is an interesting goal for anyone who follows the development of urban transport and the transformation of industrial objects.

Welcome to Hloubětín. You are standing in front of a building which is the heart of local transport and an important pillar of the Prague system of wheeled vehicles. In front of you is vozovna Hloubětín, a place where technology meets, the work of hundreds of people and the history of transport in our capital. If you look at the overall appearance of this complex, you will see the space for maintenance and shutdown of vehicles, where today you will find even the most modern long cars with multiple articles. It is a place that does not act as a traditional historical palace, but tells its own very important story about the development of the city and its needs.
Let us now stop at how this building was created and why it was found here. The Hloubětín was opened in nine hundred and fifty years. If we compare it to other Prague roads, it's one of the youngest. Its formation was not random, but it was triggered by necessity. At that time, it was necessary to replace the older roads located in Karlín and Libni. The city grew, the need for transport increased and a new, modern centre for the management of the fleet in this part of Prague was needed. Since its opening, it has thus performed its role as a base where cars prepare for their daily operation in the streets of the city.
Now pay attention to the construction itself and to what you perceive around you. Although it may seem to be a purely functional building, it hides interesting technical details. Notice the overall layout of the area. There have been significant changes over the decades. One of the most significant was the change in the year of a thousand nine hundred eighty-six, when the track was translated and the entrance to the road itself was moved to the southwest corner. This helped to streamline the movement of vehicles and to adapt the operation to the traffic layout at the time.
If you think about how the buildings are getting older, you'll see that this area must have undergone a major transformation. If you look at the space where the modern parts stand today, remember what was here before. The original weaning hall had a very specific construction. Her roof was raised like a concrete shell. Why did this very solution be chosen? The answer lies in a period context. At the time of construction, steel was a rare and expensive material that was scarce. The concrete shell was therefore a clever technical solution to cover a large area without the use of a large amount of steel.
However, this architectural element had limited service life. In time, the roof was no longer safe. In the year two thousand eighteen, the original weaning hall ceased to be used precisely because its roof ran out of life. This brings us to one of the most dramatic moments in the history of this place. In August of the year two thousand nineteen, the old construction was not removed gradually, but using a controlled shot. Imagine the noise and dust when the old concrete shell collapsed to make room for something new.
Immediately after July, two thousand nineteen, the investigation and planning process began. This whole process culminated in two thousand twenty-five. It was this year that the forest underwent a comprehensive reconstruction and modernization. The ceremonial opening of the reconstructed road house took place on March 20th. So what you see today is the result of a combination of the original function from the mid-1950s and state-of-the-art technology of the present.
In addition to the buildings themselves, it is important to mention the development of traffic in the surrounding area. In the year one thousand nine hundred seventy six the line towards Lehovec was built, which significantly expanded the possibilities of operating this part of the city and increased the importance of the road itself as a strategic point in the network.
Today, when you see the movement of trams entering and leaving the premises, remember that behind each of these cars is thousands of hours of work for mechanics, drivers and planners. Even if we don't know the names of the particular architects or famous personalities that would work here, the heroes of this place are those who keep Prague's transport going every day. It's a place made up of people who make sure that modern article cars make safe and timely commute to their passengers.
Interesting is the tension between old and new. On the one hand, we have a monument to the period saving of materials in the form of a concrete shell, which is no longer visible, but remained in the memory of the site. On the other hand, we have a modern centre prepared for the challenges of the next century. It's fascinating how one building can adapt to a period situation, from steel shortages through old halls to complete modernization in two thousand twenty-five.
Now I just recommend that you look around in peace and perceive the atmosphere of this technical area. Watch the history of a thousand nine hundred fifty one intermingle in this space with the modernity of today's times. The Hloubětín is not just a building, it is a living organism that breathes the rhythm of the city.
Thank you for taking this short trip to the Prague transport world with us. We hope that you are interested in this stop and that you will now remember this place when you look at trams in the streets, where their journey to cleanliness and security begins. We wish you a pleasant continuation in discovering the beauty and secrets of our city. Goodbye.
Tips for visitors
The best time to visit is during clear days when vehicles can be seen from the outside. Transport to this place is possible by car and public connections; specific path and connections are to be detected in the search engine. When visiting, we recommend to bring comfortable shoes and a transducer, which is familiar with urban transport technology. For photo lovers, the most interesting views of the architecture of the building and the seat of vehicles are the best light in the morning or late afternoon. Families with children appreciate the view of large red cars, which can be a fascinating experience for children from industrial architecture.

Seasonal recommendations
In the spring, the surroundings of the road area awaken to life and the young green creates a fresh contrast to industrial architecture. Soft spring light is ideal for observing construction details. We recommend shoes suitable for wet terrain and visit in the morning when the air is the cleanest.
Summer brings intense sun and high temperatures that can be unpleasant in metal structures. Nature is in full bloom and trees provide the desired shade. It is advisable to choose light, breathable clothes and set off either early in the morning or at dusk to avoid the greatest heat.
In autumn, the landscape around the monument is colored in gold and brown tones, which gives the place a melancholy atmosphere. Frequent fog may increase the mystery of this technical corner. It's practical to bring a waterproof coat and layered clothes to protect against the cold wind.
In winter, the road works more closely, especially if the snow layer covers it. Short days mean that natural light quickly disappears, which changes the perception of space. Hot clothes, solid winter shoes and gloves are essential to keep a visit in the cold.
