The oldest written mention of the castle is from 1335, which is called Høman of Zruče. It is assumed that he no longer lived in the Old Castle. In the following years, the members of the Kolovrat family became owners: in 1355 Petr z Kolovrat, in 1364 Ješek z Kolovrat with the sons of Václav, Jan and Albert. When Václav entered the Order, his brothers sold the castle to Uncle Nicholas Kolovrat of Zruč. After his death in 1405 or 1406 his sons Mikulash and Ales first ran together, then shared in 1410 with the property. Ales owned the castle until at least 1417. During the Hussite wars, the castle belonged to Zručský z Chřenovice, members of the Kolovrat family.

Nověvák brought a number of new owners and gradual architectural changes. In 1547 Zdeněk of Kolovrat sold the castle to Jindřich Střel of Rokyc. They followed Jan Černčický from Kacov (from 1548), Jiří from Kalenic (from 1553) and his son Adam, who referred him in 1560 to John the Elder from Kalenic. Sometime during that time, a Renaissance reconstruction of the original Gothic castle took place. The castle belonged to the Kalenians until the state uprising, after which the property was confiscated and in 1623 it was bought by Arnold Perglas of Losentic.

The seventeenth and eighteenth centuries were characterized by the frequent rotation of owners: Margaret Meceradová, Albrecht Kryštof Hložek, Lambert František Hřevenář, Vit de Nathermann and others. Since 1693 Ferdinand Antonín Mladota from Solopisk owned the castle, which was transferred in 1700 to Jan Václav Valkou from Adlar. The brothers Jan Ludvik and Ferdinand Bohuslav Serins of Eichenau sold it to Raus of Rausenbach because of debts in 1749. Other owners were Macneven O'Kelly, Rumerskirch, Windischgrätz and the knights of Löwenthal.

Larger construction adjustments were made in the nineteenth century. After the fire of 1781 Jan Skrejšovský made significant repairs and reconstructions in 1872-1878. In 1885, the business owner Jan Schebek bought his goods, whose son Adolf had the castle rebuilt into a neo-gothic form that we see today. In 1948, the castle was confiscated by the state and served as the seat of the local national committee, folk arts school and library. After 1989, the Schebka family was returned under restitution. In 2003 the city of Zruč nad Sázavou bought the castle with the park.

The oldest building phase of the castle was probably of a two-part nature: in the east there was a foothold, in the west there was a castle core with an almost square plan, protected by a stone carved and partially slotted moat. The main palace stood along the south side of the southeast corner. Artillery fortification consisted of baskets and courts - the south side was best fortified by three semi-circular bastions, the southeast corner was defended by a double bastion, and in the northwest stood a battery tower with shooting points. The castle thus architecturally expresses a long transition from goth to renaissance to neo-gothic.
