Židovský hřbitov v Čichticích Jewish cemetery

Židovský hřbitov v Čichticích, located south of the village of Strakonice, is a Baroque monument with a rich history. It lies in the forest on the slope of the hill Hnojnice and has an area of 1439 m ². It is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic, which underlines its importance. There is a ceremonial hall and tombstones from the middle of the 18th century.

It was probably created in the second quarter of the 18th century in connection with the Enlightenment that changed the social status of Jewish communities in Europe. Reforms towards emancipation of Jews in the Czech Republic have also affected the emergence of new cemeteries like this. Although the Jewish community in Chichtice had ceased to exist under the law of 1890, they cared about the cemetery until the time of the occupation of the Jewish village in Vodňany.

The architecture of the cemetery is defined by Baroque elements typical of its time of origin. Stone monuments from the mid-18th century are evidence of the artistic and cultural heritage of this community. In 2008, the cemetery received a grant of CZK 60,000 from the grant programme of the Nemé Cultural Monuments for reconstruction of tombstones, which is evidenced by permanent efforts to preserve it.
