Žižkovský vysílač is the highest construction in Prague with its 216 meters. This technical dominance stands at the interface of Žizkov and Vinohrad in Mahler orchards. It was built between 1985 and 1992 and represents an important example of engineering in the late 20th century.

The need for a powerful transmitter for Prague was created in 1974, when the current broadcast from the Petřín observation tower was insufficient. The original plans for the steel mast in Petrín came across the resistance of the monuments, which led to a selection of locations in Mahler orchards. The project of architect Václav Aulický and statistic Jiří Kozák and Alex Bém won over the designs of ordinary iron concrete masts thanks to aerodynamic stability and minor interference with the city panorama. The construction began in October 1985 and was accompanied by disputes, including controversy regarding the disposal of the remains at the site of the former Jewish cemetery. After social changes at the end of 1989, work was temporarily stopped. However, they continued in 1990 and the revival of technology began in March 1991.

The construction of the tower lies on a reinforced concrete plate with a diameter of 30 meters and a thickness of 4 meters, which is located 15 meters below the surface. The vertical part consists of three cylindrical steel tubes filled with concrete. The main tube with a diameter of 6.4 metres carries an antenna attachment. Two side tubes with a diameter of 4.8 metres serve as escape routes and technical facilities. A unique element is a 900 kg pendulum damper suspended at the tip. It limits the swing of the towers in the wind to 20 centimeters. The rounded shapes of the cabins, inspired by steel production in Vítkovické železárny, are designed as multi-shell. They use the waste heat from the broadcasting technology for heating.

The owner of the tower and the operator of the broadcasting part are České Radiokomunikace. The object is used to spread digital television and radio signals; the analogue television broadcasting was concluded in April 2009. Over the years, the construction has undergone modifications, for example from 2011 to 2012, when the luxury hotel suite was created.

There is a panoramic restaurant at a height of 66 metres. At a height of 93 metres, there is a view cabin offering a view up to 100 kilometres away. The original dimension of the space for 40 to 50 people reflected the intention to use the tower as a tourist attraction.

Žižkovský vysílač presents a unique connection of telecommunications infrastructure and publicly accessible prospects that document the technical ambitions of its time. Visiting this building offers the opportunity to become acquainted with unconventional architecture and get a remarkable view of the Prague metropolis from the highest stable point in the city.

Welcome to Prague. You are standing right where it touches the earth with the sky and where the human technical idea is measured with clouds. Look up, where your eyes must emerge from the usual view of the streets and houses so that they can watch the incredible, steel line that rises right above you. What you're watching right now is Žižkovský vysílač. It is a monumental building that dominates the whole area and which is the highest in Prague. When you raise your head and watch the structure go up and up, you realize its actual size. This tower is two hundred and six meters high. It's a height that gives rise to wonder and perhaps a slight respect for how much we can talk as humans. Feel the atmosphere, feel the power that this building radiates when it stands here, in the heart of the district of Zizkov, near Mahler's orchards, and as if it was constantly communicating with the sky.

Let us now move forward in time and understand how this technological miracle has become a part of our landscape. This building is not thousands of years old, but its creation was a very important point in the technical history of our city. The whole construction process started in '85. It was a period when the world and our countries were changing and when technical possibilities were expanding. The work on this huge project lasted many years, and its completion came only in 92, when the transmitter was fully operational. The creation of this tower was not random. It was a carefully thought-out plan that was supposed to be used to spread information and signals that were absolutely crucial to people's everyday lives back then. The architects behind this proposal had to combine the beauty of shape with uncompromising functionality. The main creators who inhaled this design are Václav Aulický, Jiří Kozák and Alex Bém. Their work today serves as proof of how the art of building and the needs of modern times were combined at that time. Even though time has changed and technology has shifted, this tower remains a solid part of the Prague panorama. Even in later years, it was taken care of, for example, in the year two thousand and nine, when the old way of broadcasting ended, or in the year two thousand and twelve, when the reconstruction was completed, which brought new possibilities such as hotel suites.

Now pay attention to what you see right in front of you if you look at the very structure of this building. Notice the fascinating geometry. Žižkovský vysílač is not just one massive column. Its construction is very specific and consists of three large steel tubes. These three cylinders form the very hull of the tower and carry all the important places you see in the distance. There are different spaces hidden in these tubes. There are sightseeing cabins that offer people the opportunity to look at the whole city from an incredible height. There are rooms for a restaurant where you can sit back and watch the city from a height. And, of course, there are places designed for broadcasting technology, which is the heart of this whole building. But this whole steel structure must be very stable to stand this high. And that is why its foundation is hidden deep beneath your feet. Imagine that this giant tower is not just on the surface of the earth, but is firmly anchored in a reinforced concrete plate that is located up to 15 meters below the surface. It is the invisible force that ensures that even with strong wind, the tower remains firm and unwavering.

You may now have one very interesting question. How is it possible that such a high and narrow structure, which is so protruding to the sky, remains stable even when the wind is constantly blowing over it? This is a truly fascinating mystery, which has its technical explanation. There is something in the top of this tower that is not visible at first sight, but that is absolutely vital to its survival. There's a pendulum damper hanging. Imagine a heavy body weighing 900 kilograms. This body works as a counterweight. When the wind starts to push the tower and try to wobble it, this heavy pendulum starts to move so that it can balance. Thanks to this unique system, the swing of the towers in the wind is limited to just 20 centimeters. It's an incredible technical achievement that uses the laws of physics to keep this huge steel structure at bay. It's like the tower has its own inner sense of balance that helps it face the constant forces of nature.

I hope you are interested in this view of Žižkovský vysílač and its technical genius. This building is much more than steel and concrete; It is a symbol of human progress and the pursuit of heaven. Now that you know about its core, its architects and the secrets of its stability, I suggest you continue your walk in these beautiful Mahler orchards. Perhaps you'll look up again and see something in the steel structure other than a tall tower, but a fascinating machine that still watches over Prague. Thank you for your time and read once again the details that may interest you. We wish you a beautiful rest of the day to explore this city. Goodbye.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is an hour before sunset. At this time you will see Prague in daylight, west and then night lighting, which offers the best visual experience.

You can reach the tower comfortably by public transport or by car. Parking in adjacent streets is limited, so we recommend using the search engine for current tram or bus routes that stop within walking distance.

For photography we recommend a sightseeing cabin that offers panoramic views of the entire metropolis. It is ideal to have a camera with you with a high-quality lens for shooting architecture details or a wide-angle lens for capturing the entire horizon.

In the vicinity of the tower there are Mahler sets and the top of the Holy Cross, which are ideal for walking before or after visiting. The whole area of the district of Žižkov and Vinohrady offers a pleasant environment for rest in green.

For families with children, the visit is attractive thanks to an elevator that will take visitors to height in a few seconds. Near the tower there is a park where children can play while you enjoy the view of the city.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring: When nature wakes up, the surrounding tower gets a fresh green color and the air is pleasantly clean. Light is soft in this period, which is ideal for observing a city without too strong shadows. For a visit I recommend you prepare layered clothes because the weather can quickly change between cold and heat. It's a great time to avoid the biggest crowds.

Summer: In the summer months the days are the longest and the sun shines the strongest, which creates a very clear view of the whole Prague. The atmosphere is very lively, but due to the high number of people it is necessary to plan a visit before the main peak begins. Dress lightly and don't forget drinking mode. The best time to watch the sunset is in the late evening.

Autumn: Autumn season offers wonderful golden shades in nearby parks and often a foggy morning, which gives the view a magical mood. The light is deep at this time and very interesting to capture the image. Prepare a windbreaker or a warmer jacket, because there can be stronger winds in open spaces. The number of people is beginning to decrease in this period, so it's calmer here.

Winter: Zimą is the sharpest air and thanks to cold weather it is often excellent visibility to the distance. However, the days are short, so it is good to come soon after opening so that you can use the daylight. Dress very warm and well-dressed so you don't get cold during the long standing. In advent time, there is a strange calm and mild melancholy in the surrounding area.
