The ruins of the chateau Jištěrpy, located in the village Jištěrpy, part of the village Chotinuves in the district Litoměřice, represent the remains of the original Renaissance chateau built on the basis of the old fortress. The remains of this once representative residence have been protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic since 1964.

Jištěrpy has a rich history dating back to the Middle Ages. The village is probably mentioned by 1057, while the feudal residence, the fortress Jištěrpy, first appears in the written sources of 1318 as the property of a man named Vyší. The local residence was gradually owned by several noble families - first by a flag from Jistlarp, later from 1417 to 1454 Peter from Lejen. After that, the chateau is long lost from preserved messages - the last mention of its existence dates back to 1456.

The new bloom comes in the early 16th century. From 1528 to 1543 he owned Jištěrpy Zikmund z Blatna, after which he inherited his sons Habart and Albrecht. It was Albrecht who started an ambitious reconstruction of the old fortress into the Renaissance chateau around 1589, but he did not finish it. In 1593 he sold Jištěrpy to Jan Sezim from Ústí. Construction work continued after 1605 under the leadership of John Sezimov's son George Vilem. But he lost his estate as a result of the post-white mountain confiscation, and Jištěrpy thus became the property of the Jesuit Order.

During the Jesuits, the chateau experienced a new phase of use and building modifications. At the time of the plague, the Jesuits moved teaching from Klementine, Prague. The chateau history of 1680 was infamous, when a death sentence was delivered in the courtyard for several leaders of the subordinate rebellion. Around 1724 the chateau underwent a Baroque reconstruction with the participation of architect Kilián Ignác Dientzenhofer.

After the abolition of the Jesuit Order in 1773 the chateau quickly fell. Economic use has damaged it irreversibly. In 1778, the presence of the Prussian army made the situation worse. The attempt to turn into a textile factory failed. A heavily dilapidated building, which was already subject to destruction, was dismantled into building material after 1806.

At the time of its greatest fame, the Jizlarp chateau was a four-wing storey building with vaults on the ground floor and the first floor. There were deep wine cellars under the building, some of which were preserved to this day. The ground floor contained a kitchen, Jesuit refectory and a pillar entrance hall. The first floor connected a stone staircase and dominated a large hall with coat of arms decoration. The quality of processing of stoneware elements was indicative of the funds devoted to the construction. The chateau was accompanied by a ornamental and productive garden with a Baroque chapel of St. Kilián.

Only a few fragments of past fame were preserved today - part of the suspect with reinforced corners, remains of wine cellars and several stoneware elements built into the masonry of the village buildings. Thus, the ruin remains a testament to the complex history of the landscape and ambitions that have changed over the centuries.

The original medieval fortress was rebuilt around 1589 into a Renaissance four-wing palace with vaults on the ground floor and the first floor. Around 1724 the Baroque reconstruction followed, probably the work of Kilian Ignác Dientzenhofer. The current state consists only of the quarry masonry of suspects with reinforced corners and wine cellars.

In the village of Jištěrpy, which belongs to the municipality of Chotiněves in the Litoměřice region, only modest remains have been preserved of what was once an extensive castle. It was created by remodeling an older stronghold and in the nineteenth century it was demolished. Its remains have been protected as a cultural monument since nineteen sixty-four.

The village itself is probably first mentioned around the year ten fifty-seven. The stronghold is first mentioned in thirteen eighteen as the property of a certain Výšeho. Initially it belonged to the lords from Jištěrpy, and from fourteen seventeen to fourteen fifty-four it was held by Petřík z Lejen. After fourteen fifty-six the sources fall silent about it for a long time.

Jištěrpy reappear in the first half of the sixteenth century. From fifteen twenty-eight to fifteen forty-three it was owned by Zikmund z Blatna, after him his son Habart, and then Albrecht z Blatna. He began converting the stronghold into a Renaissance castle around fifteen eighty-nine, but he did not complete the construction, and in fifteen ninety-three he sold Jištěrpy to Jan Sezima z Ústí. The work was only finished after sixteen zero-five under his son Jiří Vilém. He lost the estate during the post-White Mountain confiscations, and the Jesuits acquired Jištěrpy. They adapted the building for their own purposes, and during plague epidemies they moved classes here from the Prague Clementinum. In sixteen eighty a death sentence was pronounced in the castle courtyard over several leaders of a peasant uprising. Around seventeen twenty-four the castle underwent a Baroque reconstruction, in which Kilián Ignác Dientzenhofer most likely participated.

At the height of its glory it was a spacious four-winged multi-story building with vaults on both the ground floor and the first floor. On the ground floor there was a kitchen, a Jesuit refectory and most notably a columned entrance hall. A comfortable stone staircase led to the first floor with a large hall with heraldic decoration. The stone carving elements were crafted at a high level. Beneath the building were deep wine cellars. The castle had an ornamental and utilitarian garden with a Baroque chapel of Saint Kilianus, also attributed to Dientzenhofer.

After the Jesuit order was dissolved in seventeen seventy-three, the castle served only economic purposes and quickly deteriorated. The Prussian army caused considerable damage when it was quartered there in seventeen seventy-eight. An attempt to convert it into a textile manufactory failed, and so the crumbling building was dismantled for building materials after eighteen zero-six.

Today only a part of the foundation with a reinforced corner remains, fragments of the wine cellars, and several stone carved elements, which ended up in the walls of village buildings.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring brings fresh greenery and awakening nature to the ruins, which slowly covers old stones. The atmosphere is full of hope and light is delicate, which is ideal for walking and observing blooming vegetation. I recommend moisture-resistant shoes, because roads can be muddy after melting snow. The best place to visit is in the morning when the air is the cleanest.

In the summer months, the ruins are surrounded by dense foliage and intense sun, creating sharp shadows in the corners of the walls. The warm air gives the place lethargy peace and a feeling of summer afternoon. Due to the high season and larger groups of visitors, come early in the morning to avoid crowds. Remember light clothes, hat and plenty of fluids.

The autumn season turns the landscape into a sea of colors, with golden leaves contrasting with a grey sandstone ruin. The frequent fogs in the valley create a mysterious and melancholy mood that underlines the passing of time. Layer clothes are suitable to protect you from the cold wind. For the best photo images, select late afternoon when the sun falls low to the horizon.

In winter, the ruins are hard and exposed, especially if the walls are covered with a layer of snow or freeze. The silence and emptiness of the place emphasize its historical character and solitude. It is necessary to wear warm and waterproof clothes and fixed footwear with anti-slip sole. Count on shorter access time and we recommend a visit in the middle of the day when the most light is.
