Bazilika svatého Jiří Basilica

The Basilica of St. George was founded by Prince Vratislav I. around 920 as the second church in the Prague area at that time and was himself buried here. It was officially consecrated in 925 at the festive occasion - the transfer of the remains of Saint Ludmila from Tetín. In the Basilica, a monastery was soon founded, which became the first Czech monastery of this order. The role played by the daughter of Byslav I. Mlada, who became the first abbess, and thanks to her work, the Prague bishop was established around 973. Her brother, Prince Bloslav II, was later buried here and worshipped as co-actor of the monastery.

The basilica and monastery buildings have been tested for centuries. In 1142, in the siege of Prague, Konrad Znojemesky burned down, their rebuilding was managed by Abatyša Berta. In other repairs after the fire, the building retains its Romanesque character. In the late Middle Ages the monument went through a Gothic reconstruction and in the 14th century the bronze statue of St. George was ordered. The Hussite wars ravaged the monastery, but the benedicts returned here for Zikmund of Luxembourg. A new southern portal was built at the beginning of the 16th century. Devastating fire in 1541 the church revisited; subsequent repairs included new vaults and tower helmets. In the second half of the 17th century, Basilica acquired its baroque western facade, which was probably designed by Francesco Caratti. Beautiful statues on the facade, including the appearance of Princess Milady and founder of Wroclaw I., was picked up by František Jan Jiří Bendl. In the period from 1718 to 1722 the band of St. John Nepomuk was added with a statue by Ferdinand Maxvalen Brokoff, designed by architect František Maximilián Kaňka.

Architecturally, it is a three-boat basilica with two towers located significantly in the east, where it begins with a square priesthood ending with an apside. Under it lies the three-boat crypt. The towers have acquired reminiscent names - the northern one is called Eva, the larger southern one is Adam. Today's appearance, corresponding to the 12th century, gave basilica between 1897 and 1908 a significant purist architect Louis Lábler, who removed most of the later elements and returned to the construction of its medieval original character.
