kaple Panny Marie (Radeč) Chapel

The chapel of the Virgin Mary in Radeč is a small sacred building built at the end of the 19th century. It is located near the border between Úpek and Radeč in the Královéhradecký kraj region. Built by a couple of Jezkova who owned an inn in Radeč, it was designed by sculptor Fifth of Podradec. The chapel quickly became a local pilgrimage place, although its related legend was later revealed as fraudulent. Despite this, he remained important to the community until the 1970s. In 1993 it was designated as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic.

Built in 1892 by a pair of Ježkovi, who owned an inn in the area, the design of the chapel was created by sculptor Fifth of Podradec. During this period the Czechs experienced significant cultural and architectural developments with a revival of interest in historical styles such as classicism affecting new buildings. This context probably contributed to the late architectural style of the chapel.

Chapel is architecturally equipped with late classical forms with a single ship oriented north. It includes semicircular windows on both the east and the west side, which ends with a six-sided bell tower, which in 2009 added a small bell as a reminder of the birth of the owner's son. The altar space is enclosed in a semicircle and is added to its distinctive design.

Originally owned by Ježkovsky couple, the chapel changed hands in 2008 when it underwent major repairs. During her history, although she was not a church property and was always one of the local families, she maintained her cultural significance. The bell, supplemented in 2009, reminds a personal milestone for its owner.

The remarkable curiosity around the chapel involves a local legend that claims that the water from the nearby spring could heal the boy in 1890. This story was later unveiled as a fraud by the Indie Chronicler William Schreiber, who suggested that he increase profits for the innkeeper Jezkov. Despite this revelation and the subsequent church ban on pilgrimage, the chapel continued to be of local importance until the 1970s.

Today the chapel of the Virgin Mary in Radeč is a protected cultural monument that reflects its historical and architectural value. Although no longer hosts public pilgrimage, its protection ensures that visitors can appreciate its classical design and stories rooted inside its walls. The designation of the chapel as a cultural monument underlines its importance for local heritage, which makes it a useful visit for interested people in Czech history and architecture.
