Kostel svatého Mikuláše (Zdemyslice) Church

The Church of Saint Nicholas in Zdemyslice is a Roman Catholic church located in the village of Zdemyslice, Plzeňský kraj. Recognized as a cultural monument since 1963, it showcases architectural evolution from Gothic origins to Baroque and Neo-Gothic modifications. Its historical significance dates back to early records from 1115, reflecting long-standing human settlement in this region.

Zdemyslice is one of the oldest settlements in Plzeňský kraj, first mentioned in writing in 1115 when it belonged to the Kladruby Monastery. By the mid-14th century, a Gothic church was likely constructed here, marking an important phase in the village's architectural history. In 1371, a parish priest was appointed by the abbot of the Nepomuk Monastery, further establishing its ecclesiastical importance. The church is also listed in the inventory of parishes of the České Budějovice diocese from 1384.

Architecturally, the Church of Saint Nicholas began as a simple Gothic single-nave structure with key elements such as the presbytery's vaulting and triumphal arch still intact today. The church underwent significant Baroque modifications in the 18th century, including the addition of a sacristy and an enclosing wall for the cemetery. In the 19th century, Neo-Gothic renovations introduced new windows, a small tower on the western facade, and a redesigned roof, reflecting changing architectural tastes.

Throughout its history, the church has experienced various changes in ownership and administration. Initially linked to monastic orders such as Kladruby and Nepomuk, it later became part of the broader ecclesiastical structure under the České Budějovice diocese. These affiliations influenced both its physical modifications and its role within the community.

Several key events have shaped the church's history. In 1833, significant repairs were undertaken, including paving the floor with bricks. A devastating fire in 1953 caused extensive damage to the interior furnishings, leading to a loss of original Baroque elements like the main altar. Despite this, the church retains a Gothic crucifix from the 16th century and has since been restored with new altars and functional baroque-style side altars dating back to around 1700.

Today, the Church of Saint Nicholas stands in the center of its former cemetery, surrounded by an enclosing wall featuring a southern entrance with a Tuscan column and iron cross from the mid-19th century. The interior, largely modernized after the fire, includes functional baroque-style side altars and a set of working organ pipes installed in 1909. Visitors can also appreciate the historical continuity represented by the church's two bells, one returned post-WWII.
