The Marian column in New Bydžov is a Baroque sandstone monument from 1706. It is a dominant feature of Masaryk Square in the city centre in Hradec Králové district. The building is the work of sculptors from the Pacák family and is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic under registration number ÚSKP 33269 / 6-674.

The foundations of the column were laid on 3 May 1697, when the Virgin Mary was added to the object. It was only in 1716 that the sculpture itself was created in its basic form. Construction followed a plague epidemic in 1715. In the wider context of the época of the highest baroque in Bohemia, the creation of similar columns as symbols of gratitude for the end of the disease often brought.

The monument stands on a quadruple-shaped pedestal with convex cut sides and nobodies. The National Pillars are built on a coso. The central part consists of a column with the culmination of the Virgin Mary of Immaculate Conception. On the east side of St. Roch, on the west side of St. Shebestian, on the north St. Francis of Xaversky and on the south St. Joseph with Jesus. On the corner pillars are the statues of St. John Nepomuk (south-east), St. Vavnice (southwest), St. Wenceslas (north-west) and St. Florian (north-east).

There have been several changes over time. There used to be a stone balustard around the column, but it was removed in 1891. Changes also affected the iconography of the southern nika. Here the statues of St. Rosalie and St. Ludmila were replaced before the present figure of St. Joseph and Jesus was placed in 1941. The selection of some saints, such as St. Roch and St. Shebestian, is traditionally associated with the protection against the plague.

Today, the Marian Column serves as an important example of baroque sculpture in the region. Thanks to its location and architectural value it is a key point when visiting the centre of New Bydžov.

This monument is a valuable testament to the history of the city and period spirituality. It is recommended to visit it and take a closer look at the detailed work of baroque masters.

Welcome to New Byjo. Right now, you're standing in Masaryk Square, and one of the city's most prominent dominant stands before you. Look before you at this noble Marian pillar. It is a building that immediately attracts vision with its height and fineness of sandstone working. Feel how this monument unifies the space around it and gives the square depth and historical significance. It's a place where time stops and where you can feel the spirit of a time when faith and art were inseparable in total.

Now let's look at how this column came into being and why it actually stands here. The history of this place takes us deep into the late seventeenth century. The foundations of this work were laid on the third day of May in the year of the twelfth six-minute hundred ninety-seven. At that time, the statue of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception was placed here, which is dedicated to the whole column. However, the whole construction process lasted longer and in various stages the monument changed. In the background of the sandstone column itself, we will find a date from the year of these seven hundred and six. However, in the basic form you see today, the sculpture was only completed in the year seven hundred and sixteen.

Why was the column built in this form? The answer leads us to tragic events of the time. The construction in its final form followed a plague epidemic of seven hundred and fifteen. At that time, such columns were an expression of gratitude for the end of the disease or a request for protection from future disasters. It was a symbol of hope for an entire city that survived a dark period of sickness and fear.

Now pay attention to the architecture itself and the details that you can observe right in front of you. Notice the material from which the column is made. It is a sandstone that allowed baroque sculptors to create fine shapes and detailed ornaments. The whole building is today protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic, which shows its high value. Look closely at the lower part of the base. Here you will see the statues of the saints on the corner pillars and nothing. If you approach, you can identify the characters that guard the peace of the square. Among them are, for example, Saint Roch and Saint Shebestian, who have traditionally been associated with protection against plague epidemics. Note also St. Francis Xaversky and St. Joseph. The statue of St. Joseph and Jesus is an interesting detail because it was added to the south side much later, namely nine hundred forty one.

When examining the overall composition, feel the harmony between the lower statues and the top figure of the Virgin Mary. This whole space was once perceived differently. If you imagine a square over a century ago, you will find that the column was surrounded by a stone balustrad. But this stone corral disappeared in the year one thousand eight hundred ninety-one, which gave the pillar greater openness and allowed you to approach it from any side.

Who are the people who created this monument? The creation of this Baroque work is linked to the family tradition. The sculptors of the Pacák family put their talents and craft education into the sandstone. The name Pacák is crucial in connection with this column, because these artists were able to turn hard stone into light, almost liquid shapes that are so typical of baroque style.

The interesting thing that may interest you is the time span between laying the foundations and the final form of the sculpture. Almost 20 years of difference suggests how slowly and carefully it was built at the time, and also how powerful circumstances such as the plague epidemic affected the shape of the monument. It is fascinating to think that this column has seen generations of the people of New Bydžov, watched changes in the architecture of the surrounding houses and survived the scourge of history so that today it can tell its story to you.

Look up again and see how the column connects the earth to the sky. It's a silent testimony of faith, art, and human desire for immortality. This sandstone colossus is not just a pile of stone, but a massive memory of the city.

Now that you've become familiar with the history and details of this beautiful monument, I suggest you take a moment in silence to think about the people who stopped it centuries ago. Then you can slowly move on and explore other corners of New Bydžov, which has many other hidden stories in reserve. Thank you for your attention and I wish you a pleasant continued journey to explore.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is early morning or late afternoon when the sun hits the sandstone pole at an angle, which will highlight the details of baroque carving. In these hours there is also a quieter atmosphere in the square.

Travel by car or public transport to the memory; Check the current stopping and connection options in maps or search engines.

For the best photos we recommend to observe the column from different angles of the square so that the architecture of the surrounding houses can be seen in the shot. The most distinctive light for capturing the details of the sculpture is in summer months.

Families with children can use the square space to relax and find together different characters and symbols on the pillar, which can be a fun game in observation.

Themed route

Marian Column (memorial) - The main destination of the trip in the centre of the village, which will capture its beauty and history. A walk in its immediate area allows a detailed view of the carving and architecture of this monument.

Seasonal recommendations

In spring, the surrounding area is awakening to life and fresh green creates a fresh contrast to the surface of the monument. Light is soft in this period, which is ideal for capturing the details of statues. We recommend light but laminated clothing and a visit in the morning when the air is the cleanest.

In the summer months, the intense sun and hot air dominate the space. Bright light highlights plastic detail, but can create sharp shadows. It is advisable to leave very early in the morning or at dusk to avoid the greatest heat. Don't forget the headgear and comfortable shoes to walk through the city.

Autumn brings a warm colour of decayed leaves and a foggy atmosphere to the surroundings that gives the place mystery. The lighting is golden and milder. For visitors it is best to choose a waterproof coat and visit the place in the afternoon when the sun falls to the horizon.

In winter, the column operates in silence and calm, or in white snow, which highlights its silhouette. The atmosphere is moderate and peaceful, especially in advent time. It is necessary to wear warm winter clothes and fixed shoes with anti-slip soles to keep the walk safe.
