The weather column in Miletín is a unique monument from 1908, which was used to measure weather and time. The building is located in the square of Karl Jaromír Erbena. It combines practical function with artistic performance in the spirit of Art Nouveau. Since 1992 it has been registered as a protected building.

The idea for the construction was created on 9 July 1907 at the meeting of the Krasční společnost. At that time in Czech cities, these organizations were created to improve the appearance of municipalities and increase the culture of public space. In Europe there was a popular Art Nouveau with detailed ornamental decoration. The column was designed by žák Sochařsko-kamenické školy v Hořicích and it was ceremonially collaborated in September 1908.

The construction is made from a burning sandstone. The stone base of the 64 x 105 cm plates is connected by blocks. On it stands a square pillar. At 34 cm height, the ascending part ends in about one metre with a slab ledge. On the pillar there are four lockers with glass doors. Above them is a geometric decoration in the form of forty ascended cubes. At the top of the pillar there are four reliefs of girls' heads: curly, shawl, plant shoots and grapes. The entire object ends with a four-sided dome of the roof with an Art Nouveau crown and a designated banners, which serves as a decorative indicator of the world's sides.

Several craftsmen participated in the production. František Tuček made a pillar, the Art-Nouveau crown with a head was made by sculptor workshop Hátle and Vejs from Horice and the famous banners made by artistic locksmith Barták. Technical equipment was supplied by the watchmaker from the Belgrade Spa. The column had two hours, thermometer, barometer, humidifier, pressure gauge, compass and statistical table. The clock and thermometer were placed on the south side, barometer, second clock and humidifier on the north, mercury thermometer on the east and compass with a table on the west side. A box with documents about the history of the Enchanting Society was inserted inside the column.

After the completion, the column was taken into its care by the city of Miletín and the clock was regularly stretched by the city officer. In addition, the barographer was added, but was moved to the local post office window in No. 100 for fear of theft. In 1929 the base plate, instruments and display cases were repaired and a table with information about the city was added. A pressure gauge was stolen in 1933. In the 1950s, the Enchanting Association was abolished and all instruments were gradually stolen from the weather station.

The basic renewal took place after 1989. In 2015, a metal rudder was stolen, which was later found and replanted. A base instability was detected in 2018. The column is now decayed and its overall reconstruction is being prepared.

This object represents a rare example of a combination of technical instrumentarianism and Art Nouveau from the early 20th century. It is a valuable witness to the activities of local ornamental associations and is worth visiting as an architectural unique in the village Miletín.

Welcome to Miletín. Right now, you're standing in the square of Karl Jaromír Erben and in front of you is a very unusual object. At first glance, it may look like a decorative pylon or a monument, but you're actually looking at a unique weather column. Stop for a moment, take a breath and let your eyes get used to this interesting shape that stands out from the surrounding space. It's a place where science meets, practical benefits and high art.

Now let's move back more than a hundred years in time. Imagine the atmosphere of the early 20th century. It was a time of optimism, faith in progress and interest in science. It was in this spirit that the idea of building this pillar arose. It all started in the year of a thousand-nine-seven, when a group of people from the Enchanting Society met. These citizens wanted something for their little town that would not only be useful to every citizen, but would also have taken down the main square. They wanted a place where everyone could find out what time it was and what the weather would be like without having to travel far away.

This ambitious plan was implemented very quickly. Already in the year one thousand nine-eight, the column was completed and ceremonially presented to the public. At that time, it was a modern technological element that looked very noble in the landscape. It was a symbol of modernity and community care.

Now pay attention to the very appearance of the column. Look at the material it's made of. It is a high-quality sandstone, which is known for its durability and its beautiful colour. Note how smooth and elegant the object lines are. The whole column is shown in the spirit of Art Nouveau, which was a very fashionable style, inspired by nature and preferred organic shapes to strict geometry.

Who actually designed and built this column? We don't know the exact name of the architect, but we do know that the work came out of the hands of the student of the Sculpture-stone school in Hořice. It can be seen that the author had an excellent craft base and managed to combine practical function with aesthetic value.

Take a closer look at the details surrounding you. Notice in the lower part of the pillar of the four reliefs. They are finely worked girls' heads that give the whole object a human dimension and finesse. These details are typical of the period at the time and show that the creators did not just want to build a simple measuring instrument but a real work of art.

If you lift the view above, you will see a metal rudder at the top. It's not just for decoration. It serves as an indicator of the world's parties, which was very valuable in the days before digital maps. It's interesting that this bead has its own history. Ten years ago, namely in the year two thousand fifteen, it was unfortunately stolen. Fortunately, however, she has managed to ensure her return, so you can admire her today.

Now let's talk about what made this column really functional. Imagine you're a resident of Miletína a century ago. You come to the square and the column provides you with all the important information at once. A series of instruments were placed in his body. Notice the places where there were double clocks to be seen from different directions. In addition to time, the thermometer informed you about the current temperature of the air and the humidity level in the atmosphere. The barometer, which measured air pressure and helped predict weather changes, was also a key element.

But the history of the column was not without complications. Of course, the time and weather that the column measured affected it physically. In the year one thousand and nine hundred and twenty-nine it was necessary to repair the base plate in order to remain stable and at the same time to revise and repair the measuring instruments themselves. The column remained operational even in times of great social change.

Here we come to one of the little mysteries and sad events of this place. In the year one thousand nine hundred thirty-three a pressure gauge was stolen. Imagine confusing the locals who were used to watching air pressure right here. This event shows that even so unique monuments can be targeted by clumsy or deliberate interventions. Yet the column survived and lost its value.

Today meteorologický sloup v Miletíně is registered as a protected object. This means that the state recognises its uniqueness and value for the whole country. It is a rare example of how science, craft and art can be combined in one object. It's fascinating to think how many generations of people have passed it, how many times they've looked at it to see if they can take an umbrella or if it's not time to go to work.

Now try to imagine what contrast that was in the year of the thousand and nineteen eight. Among the traditional houses in MiletínA, this elegant sandstone column with metal elements and precision devices grew at once. It must have been a real experience for people back then.

Take another look at this object. Feel harmony between hard stone and fine Art Nouveau lines. Note how the colour of the flaming sandstone changes depending on the light and weather that this pillar has watched so faithfully. He is a silent witness to the history of this place that has survived for decades and still stands proudly in the middle of the square.

That concludes a short journey to this fascinating piece of technology and art. I hope you enjoyed this view of the past and that this unique column has attracted you with its combination of utility and beauty. Now you can quietly continue to explore the beauty of Miletína, perceive the atmosphere of the surrounding area and perhaps stop at other attractions that this town offers you.

Thank you for your attention and wish you a pleasant rest of the day on your next trips.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is late spring or autumn, when the colors of surrounding nature are softer and the sandstone of the column excels in natural light. Transport to the village Miletín is possible by car and public connections, check the specific routes in the current timetables.

To visit we recommend to take opposites for comfortable walking and plenty of water. As it is an outdoor object, it is advisable to monitor the weather forecast so that the rain doesn't surprise you when you look at the details.

For the best photos we recommend to come to the morning or late afternoon sun, which beautifully highlights the carvings in the mountain sandstone. The best angles are from a low perspective so that the column is captured at its entire height against the sky.

Families with children can use a visit to explain the basis of weather and time measurements. Children will like the discovery of various brands and gauges that are represented on this unique building from 1908.

Themed route

Here is the proposal for a visit:

1. Meteorological column in Miletín - unique tower. It is the main destination of the journey where you can see the rare apparatus for measuring air pressure and weather. 2. Landmark area - surrounding area. Walk around the column allows you to perceive its size and architecture from different angles. 3. Exposure in the object - internal space. Here you will get detailed information about the operation of the column and its history.

Seasonal recommendations

In the spring, the area of the column wakes up in green and fresh air gives new energy to the place. The light is fine in the morning, which helps to perceive the details of the construction. We recommend shoes suitable for humid terrain and light coating of clothing because spring weather is usually unstable.

Summer brings bright sun and bright colors of the landscape that highlight the object itself. The atmosphere is hot and dry, which is ideal for long walks around. It is advisable to choose the morning time to avoid the greatest heat, and not forget the headgear and plenty of water.

The autumn of nature around Miletína turns into gold and brown tones, creating a melancholy background for this memory. The light is golden and less intense, which is pleasant for sight. It's practical to wear a waterproof coat and tight shoes that can handle fallen leaves and mud.

Winter wraps the landscape with silence and a possible layer of snow that turns the whole place into a dream. The atmosphere is freezing and raw, which may highlight the poor state of the building. Hot clothes, thermal pads and high-quality winter shoes are essential to make the visit safe and comfortable.
