Pomník Karla Jaromíra Erbena in Miletín is a remarkable historical monument, which represents one of the most important social events in the history of the city. It is located in the centre of the village Miletín in the district of Jičín in Králové hradecký kraj and has been protected historically since 1992. The memorial is dedicated to the important Czech literary historian and poet Karl Jaromír Erben.

The memorial was created in 1901 when the association for the establishment of the memorial was established. In 1899, a memorial plaque was unveiled at the home of Erben, which became the first success in preparing for the construction of the monument. In 1901 there was a festive revelation of the memorial, which became one of the biggest social events in the history of the city.

The memorial is the work of sculptor Henry Říhou, who was selected after the winning competition between twenty-eleven designs. The style of the monument is academic to match the then taste and character of the square. Before this, there was a competition in which twenty-one sculptures were involved.

The monument is 8 meters high and stands on a stone pedestal. The bronze bust of Karl Jaromír Erbena is located on the pedestal, which is approx. 120 cm high. On the sides of the monument there are bronze reliefs with scenes from Erben's Bouquet - Wedding shirts and Záhrov's bed. The base is made of sandstone blocks and above the base is a belt made of a bundle of bars bound by a cross. The crown ledge of the pedestal is blown forward with the plate and strip profile.

The memorial was made one year after the jury's decision. In 1903 it was supplemented with decorative fittings. In 1943, Erben's breasts and both bronze reliefs were confiscated for war purposes, but all were saved and melted. In 1945 the statue was returned to a stone pedestal.

Approximately 8000 people attended the memorial ceremony. Among the guests were the author of the cantata Jan Malát, painter Karel Liebscher, Erben's friend and director of Gymnasium Klemper, writers František Serafin Procházka, Josef M. Hovorka and František Herites. Professors František White and František Stýblo were present during the Association of Czech Teachers. The Czech Museum and Matrix of Czech represented Jaromir Čelakovský, the association Svatobor Alois Jirásek, was also represented by the town meeting in Prague. Members of the Reich Assembly Josef Černý and J. Jaroš and councilman of the Royal Capital of Prague were also present.

Today the monument is protected as a cultural monument and is worth visiting for its historical value and significance. It is remarkable by its architecture and creative rendition, which corresponds to the then taste and character of the square. The monument is also a symbol of the worship of cultural personalities in Czech countries in the period around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Welcome to Miletín, a place deeply connected with one of the most important names of Czech literature. Right now, you're standing in front of Karl Jaromír Erben's memorial. Stop for a moment, take a breath and feel the space around you. There is a noble work before you, which is not just a mere reminder of one person, but a symbol of national pride and respect for the Czech word. The first thing you're probably interested in is his remarkable height. The whole monument measures eight meters, which gives it some authority and makes it the dominant of this space. It is a place where history, art and poetic moods meet, which has accompanied the entire life of this poet and historian.

Let us now look together at how this monument originated and what was the context of its establishment. The path to this form was neither short nor simple. It started in 1884 when a special committee was set up, which was a group of people who decided that in Miletín there must be a dignified place to honor Karl Jaromír Erben's memory. Imagine that time when people united in a desire to preserve the legacy of their famous son. But before the monument in its present form saw light, other important steps were taken. In 1899, a commemorative plaque was revealed at Karl Jaromír Erbena's home house, which served as the first official sign of its importance in this place. That was just a prelude to the big moment that followed two years later.

Now pay attention to the work itself. If you look closely, you will see that the monument is the work of the sculptor Henry of the River. His name isn't here by accident. The design of the monument was not simple, but a competition was announced in which several candidates met. Jindřich Říha won this competition, which shows his ability to capture the spirit of the time and the personality of Erben himself. Notice the base that carries the entire structure. Right here, at the level of your eyes, is the bronze bust of Karl Jaromír Erben. Look at the features of the face, the expression that radiates from it. The Bronze, as a durable and noble material, was chosen to resist time and pass the face of a poet to future generations. The entire composition, from the high pedestal to the detailed bust, is designed to create a sense of respect and stability.

When we think about this place, we can't ignore the personalities associated with it. In addition to Karl Jaromír Erben himself and sculptor Henry Ríha, other important names appear in connection with this period and creation. Among them are Ladislav Šaloun or Jan Malát, who embodied the then artistic peak. Also Karel Václav Rais or Jaroslav Sutnar are names that, within a broader cultural context, accompanied efforts to preserve national heritage. All these people, whether they worked directly at the memorial or were part of the then intellectual society, helped create an atmosphere in which this monument could be created and still survive.

Now I want to take you back in time to 1901. Imagine you're standing right here, but there's no peace around you, but the noise and excitement of thousands of people. The ceremonial discovery of the memorial in Miletín was one of the most important social events in the history of the entire city. Estimates say that about 8,000 people have participated here. At that time it was an incredible number that turned little Miletín into a centre of Czech culture. People came from around, from cities to celebrate together a man who helped define Czech identity by his creation and study of history. Imagine the feelings of pride, the festive speeches and the sense of belonging that day in this space. It is this event that shows how deeply Erben had an impact on its contemporaries and on all the generations that followed.

You may be wondering why this monument is so important today. In addition to its aesthetic and historical value, the work is protected as a cultural monument. This means that the state recognises its irreplaceable importance to our history and culture. It is basically a promise that this monument will be preserved for future generations in unaltered form. When you look at these eight meters of stone and bronze, you don't just see the statue, but you see the memory of a nation that is embodied in one particular figure. It's fascinating how one object can combine so many emotions, names and historical data.

Karel Jaromír Erben was not only a poet who wrote fairy tales and myths, but was primarily a precise literary historian. His language work and his respect for tradition are the mirror of what this monument represents. You are therefore facing the materialisation of respect for the truth, history and beauty of the Czech language. All of these elements connect at this one point in Miletín.

Now that you have learned of the origin of the monument, of its creator, and of the incredible crowd that celebrated its unveiling here, I recommend you to bring it back again. Try looking at it from different angles. Feel its height colliding with the sky and the bronze bust responding to the light of day. Let yourself be consumed for a moment by the silence that is now in Miletín, and imagine the echoes of the thousands of people from 1901.

Your Miletín journey does not end here. There are other places in the area that can impress you and help you to complete a comprehensive picture of the life and work of Karel Jaromír Erbena. I invite you to continue to explore this picturesque place, visit nearby monuments and be inspired by the atmosphere that still persists. Thank you for your attention to this noble monument, and I wish you the pleasant rest of your stay in Miletín. Goodbye.
