Meziměstská telefonní ústředna is a monumental building in Prague 3 in Žižkov. It was created in 1921- 1926 in the style of Czech art deca. The building is important with its period technical equipment, corner towers and history of telecommunications development in the Czech state. Since 1958 it has been protected as a real-estate cultural monument.

The construction was built according to the Bohumir Kozák project in response to the rapid development of the telephone network. The previous centre in Jindřišská Street was no longer enough for growing interest, which required the construction of a new, modern centre. The first intercity call was a new switchboard on Fibich Street connected in June 1927. The total construction cost about 10 million crowns.

Architecturally, it's a four-story building in a block building. It is superior to two six-story corner towers with eight-sided upper parts supported by columns. The facade is broken down by mansions, pilasters, suprafenestras, circular targets and rectangular fields. The main wing shows a triangular skyline, while the other wings have a curved line. The front of Fibich Street is decorated with portals with life-long allegorical statues of Ladislav Kofránek. These represent postal, shorthand, crop, welfare and telephone. The interior has an arched vestibule with a cassette and a main hall with dimensions of 26 x 15 meters and a height of 10 meters, which is decorated with a rib arch. The original plans envisaged a pool, which was probably not implemented.

At the time of its launch, the switchboard was one of the most modern in the world thanks to equipment from Standard Electric, Bell Telephone and Siemens & Halske. She employed 350 people, mostly connection manipulators. These were operated by 82 connecting stations in the main hall in continuous three-shift operation. The building also served as a post office and telegraph exchange. In 1936-1938, the Technical Institute of the Ministry of Posts and Telegraph broadcast a test television signal.

The capacity of the building was insufficient in the 1970s. In 1974 a new telex exchange was launched in Jindřišská Street and in 1979 the central telecommunications building in Olšanska Street became the centre of telecommunications. A two-kilometer underground collector was built between the two buildings to transfer the lines. The building served as a post office, office and veterinary clinic in the years 2006-2010. The interior and the sgraffite plaster of the staircase suffered insensitive modifications.

Since 2010, the building has remained unused, despite the competition for a study of its further use in 2016. In 2026, the development company PSN announced a reconstruction plan for rental housing to take place between 2026 and 2028. At present, only an underground collector is operating on Olšanska Street.

The building presents a unique example of Czech art deca and technical progress of the first republic. Its monumental appearance and historical importance make it a remarkable goal for every interested person in Prague architecture and the history of communications.

Welcome to Prague, Žizkov. You are standing right in front of a building which, both its size and its surrounding area, is completely oval. It is a monumental building that has certainly attracted you to your strength at first sight. Look at her silhouette, characterized by two corner towers. These towers make it a long-term dominant feature of the entire panorama of this part of the metropolis. It's where the history of communication meets the courageous architecture of the beginning of the last century.

Now let's stop at how this building came into being and why it actually stands here. Imagine the time after the First World War, when the newly created republic tried to modernize and connect. It was in this atmosphere that the construction of this complex began in the year of nine-twenty-seven years. The whole project was designed by architect Bohumír Kozák. The aim was to create an area that would serve as an interurban and international telephone exchange. At that time, it was a key hub for the transmission of information to ensure a smooth flow of calls between different cities and across state borders. The construction lasted five years and was completed in the year nine and twenty-six. At the time of its launch, it was one of the most modern telephone stations in the world, which shows the ambition our country had at that time.

Now pay attention to the architecture itself. The building was performed in the style of Czech art deca, which is a direction that emphasizes geometry, elegance and a certain kind of luxury. Note the clean lines and monumental character of the entire object. If you look carefully at the facade, you will see details that give depth and meaning to the building. The facade is decorated with superlife allegorical sculptures. These characters are not just for decoration, but each one represents a certain area. You can find here a representation of postal, shorthand, crops, well-being and, of course, telephone. It's a fascinating way the architects at the time expressed the function of the building through works of art. The whole project was worth approximately CZK 10 million at the time, which was indeed an astronomical amount which underlines the importance of this place for state infrastructure.

When we talk about the people involved in this place, we must not forget personalities like Ladislav Kofránek. It was these people who helped control complex call coupling systems at a time when phone calls were not automated, but required the operator's intervention. Imagine hundreds of people in huge halls who, with the help of cables and switches, connected people from different corners of the world. The main milestone in the history of this place was the June of the year of the nine-twenty-seven, when the first intercity call was made. It was a moment that changed the way people communicated and shortened the distance between cities for a mere moment.

Now I'm going to transfer you to something that's left in many records as a little mystery or curiosity. If you looked into the original plans that Bohumír Kozák prepared, you would find something very surprising. The original plans for the building included a pool. Imagine, in such a strict and functional building for a telephone exchange, there should be room for swimming. However, modifications were probably made during construction and this pool was never built. It's interesting to think about how working with technology and relaxation in water would be combined in such an environment.

This building has survived decades of changes and regimes. Its value was recognised very soon and therefore since the year nine-fifty-eight is protected as a real cultural monument. This means that its appearance and structure must be preserved for future generations to remind us of the era when the telephone was a miracle of technology and architecture expressed national pride and modernity.

Now, if you look again at these two towers, which are so strongly protruding into the sky above Zizkov, remember that there is a monument to human connection before you. A place where millions of words and messages ran through wires to connect people across continents. It is a building that combines the strict functionality of the switchboard with the artistic lift of statues and the geometric beauty of its time.

Thank you for stopping by this fascinating building. I hope you enjoyed a look at this jewel of Czech art deca. Now invited to further explore the surroundings of Prague 3, where many other hidden stories and architectural pearls await you. I wish you a pleasant journey and a beautiful day in our city. Goodbye.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is in the morning or late afternoon when the sun hits the facade of the building at an angle that best highlights the details of Czech art deca. The building is available by car and public transport; Check the current connection in the search engine.

Since it is a building in operation, it is not necessary to bring any special equipment, it is enough comfortable shoes to walk around. We recommend to have a camera with you because the monumental appearance of the building is very impressive.

For the best photos, focus on the geometric shapes of the building and its massive appearance. The ideal light for exterior images is shortly before sunset, when the colors are more saturated. Since the building serves as an office, take care of the privacy of people in the building.

During a short walk in the surrounding area you can visit Žižkov TV Tower, which is located in close proximity. It is an ideal combination of modern architecture tower and historical style exchange.

For families with children we recommend to focus the way on finding interesting ornaments on the facade of the building, which may be a playful challenge for children. Then a great experience is visiting the nearby TV tower.

Themed route

Here is the design of the thematic route:

1. Meziměstská telefonní ústředna (others) - Technical monument. The place serves to know the history of connections and voice transmission in the urban environment. 2. Žižkov TV Tower - Important building in close proximity. It offers a unique view of the city from a great height and captures its unusual form.

Seasonal recommendations

In spring, the surrounding area of the building awakens into life and the first trees bloom. The light is soft and pleasant, which helps to better perceive the facade details. We recommend light spring coats and walking in the morning when the air is the cleanest.

In the summer months it dominates areas of strong sun and hot air. A building in a dense building can act as a cold island, while the surrounding parks are in full bloom. The best time to visit is early morning or late evening, when there are fewer people and radiant heat retreats. Light clothing made of natural materials is necessary during this period.

Autumn brings the golden colour of leaves and more frequent fog to the district, which provide a mysterious atmosphere. Lighting is summing and dimming, which creates a melancholy pattern. It is advisable to choose waterproof shoes and a warm sweater, with the best weekend afternoons.

Zimą is the atmosphere cramped and grated, often accompanied by snow or freeze. The building stands out in contrast to the grey sky and evening lights in the windows, which in advent time seem cozy. A warm cap, gloves and solid winter shoes are essential for visitors to avoid cooling during the exterior observation.
