Prague... Žižkov is a former main freight station representing the largest preserved functionalist industrial building in the metropolis. It is located at the address of Jan Želivský 2200 / 2 in the village Žižkov in the territory of the former Red Court under the Jewish furnaces and its architecture and history are among important technical monuments.

The construction of this vast complex has been ongoing since the early 1930s. The line project was processed by Ing. Miroslav Chlumecký and approved by the State Regulatory Commission in 1927. The building itself was designed together by Dr. Karel Caivas and Ing. Warehouses and ramps have grown since 1931, administrative buildings since 1934. The construction costs amounted to approximately CZK 100 million. The whole process took place during the period when Czechoslovakia faced the effects of the Great Depression. This has led to extensive public investment in infrastructure and modernisation of the transport network in order to cope with increasing traffic volumes.

The construction was realized by important companies Karl Skorkovsky, Bohumil Beladu and František Strnad. The steel construction was supplied by ČKD and elevators by Jan Prohol. The main building of the railway station is combined with the patron warehouse. The axis of the complex follows the line of Olšanská Street near Jana Želivský Street, which is perpendicular to them. The uniqueness consisted of a progressive solution at the time with an ethage warehouse located on both sides of the track. In the underground administrative building they set up a transformer station with seven transformers of 150 kWa output. The second basement of the administrative building was housed by specialized machinery for cold stores and cold stores, which was installed by the company Českomoravska- Kolben-Daněk.

In February 1935 they completed the northern warehouse and started regular operations on March 1, 1936. The transport importance of the construction began to decline after the construction of a food warehouse in Strašnice in 1966. Normal operation in the building ended in 2002. Subsequently, an official, political and economic struggle to preserve buildings took place between 2005 and 2013. The main objects were declared a cultural monument for the first time on December 3, 2010. After several rounds of appeals and new decisions, the protection of the main building became effective on 12 March 2013. The building was rented to various companies for warehouses or shops. On 31 December 2015, the last carrier, Rail Cargo Operator - CSKD, took the last cars. Since 1 January 2016, the authorities have officially stopped the railway operation. At the time, the railway authority cancelled the train and in the following years the downstream infrastructure was gradually interrupted and disconnected. The location is planned to build a residential and administrative complex for 11 000 new flats and up to 23 000 inhabitants.

The recorded events include, for example, the events of 21 September 2010. At that time, the Club of Railway Travelers in cooperation with ROPID organized a historic personal motor set from Masaryk Railway Station through Libeň and Malešice directly to the freight station. On Saturday, February 5, 2011, there was an accident in moving the train set. Due to the failure at the end of a piece of track, one car crashed into the building and caused damage provisionally calculated at 1.7 million crowns. The next event was the disconnection of the railway station from the railway network in November 2019. The Railway Infrastructure Administration then replaced the switch with a straight track after an emergency in Malesice.

This extensive functionalist complex is now a valuable proof of interwar industrial architecture and technical maturity of its time. Visiting the site offers a unique view of the history of Czechoslovak transport infrastructure and is worth seeing as a reminder of the past era of railway transport in Prague.

Welcome to this monumental building, which is now acting on you with its unprecedented size and its unwavering presence. You are standing in a place that carries the soul of old, industrial Prague. If you look at this structure, it's likely that its purity, its order, and the incredible power that it emits. It's not just an ordinary building, it's an nákladové nádraží Žižkov, one of the most important pillars of our city. Feel the atmosphere of a place where once the strength of iron tracks met with human work and technical progress. This construction represents the largest preserved industrial building in this modern, functional style that you can find throughout the metropolis. Its lines are clear, its shapes are logical, and in every part of it there is a sense of intention that it should be useful, strong and lasting.

Let us return together to the time when everything was beginning to be planned here and when this space began to change beyond recognition. This entire area you know today was formerly part of a territory called the Red Court. Already in the year one thousand nine hundred and twenty-seven, big preparations started here when the state regulatory commission approved the new line project. But it wasn't just a random project, it was a vision of the future. After the road was set, the era of intensive construction followed. Between a thousand and nine hundred and thirty and a thousand and thirty-six years, this massive structure, which was supposed to serve as the heart of cargo transport, rose here. Behind this ambitious purpose were capable creators who were able to combine the needs of technology with aesthetic purity. The main authors of this proposal were Karel Caivas and Vladimír Weiss, and Miroslav Chlumecký participated in their work. These three men must have brought not only technical skill but also the courage to build something so extensive and so new.

Now pay attention to what you see right in front of you, and try to understand the brilliant logic that keeps this building together. Notice how architecture is connected to function. What makes this place absolutely special is the way that individual parts of the building are interconnected. The main building is not only an isolated block, but is closely connected to the patrols which are located on both sides of the track. Imagine the incredible efficiency of moving goods, as they moved on these floors, as they were organised to make everything go as fast and smooth as possible. It is a fascinating example of how the architecture serving industry can be beautiful with its own logic and its ability to organise a huge volume of work into one harmonious whole. Every surface, every line, and every floor has a clear purpose here.

Now, if you think about what kind of life this place has led, you will feel an echo of ancient activity. In the year one thousand and nine, thirty-six, exactly on the first of March, a regular operation started. Imagine the noise, the movement, the constant stream of things going through this place. The station was a living organism that powered the city. It worked for so many decades, until the year two thousand and two, when normal traffic in the station building was terminated. A place that used to warm up activity became a silent witness to history. But this silent era did not mean oblivion. On the contrary, the value of this place was so high that in the year two thousand thirty-three the main building was officially protected as a cultural monument. That was recognition for the incredible quality that the building carries.

Do you know how ambitious this building was at the time? To understand its importance, we also need to look at how much effort and resources have been put into it. The construction costs amounted to approximately CZK 100 million. In those circumstances, it was an incredible amount, a huge investment that shows how much the company relied on the railway and industrial development. Every crown was put into something that would take generations. And this building really takes time. It is a monument that has endured its era and still teaches us about how people have been able to plan in the past with respect to the future.

And if you're interested in anything else, pay attention to what's under your feet. This building is not just what you see on the surface. In its foundations, in the underground areas, there is an administration that was crucial to the management of this huge whole. The whole system, from underground rooms to high storehouses, was designed as one connected machine. It's a fascinating idea that underground was the most important management that allowed all the movement above the ground you imagined.

Now, there is no other difficult path for you, but I invite you to move on and continue to explore this place or its vicinity. Let yourself be inspired by this monumental presence and see how history intertwines with the present in every step you take. Thank you for stopping by and taking part in this historic monument. We wish you a beautiful and inspiring journey further.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit this monumental functionalist building is in the morning, when the sun is ideally drawn by magnificent industrial shapes and long platform of the former main station. Take with you fixed shoes to explore a large area, because the surfaces can be uneven, and also plenty of drinking water. For photography we recommend to capture massive concrete structures and industrial details in afternoon side light, which gives the frames maximum depth. The adjacent location of the Jewish kilns and the connecting line of Olšanská Street in Prague's Žižkov district is worth a visit in the vicinity. Families with children can see a visit as a discovery of a great technical adventure, but it is necessary to be careful given the nature of the historic industrial site.
