Osvračín is a castle ruin on the eastern edge of the village of the same name in the Domažlice district. It stands at the top of the island called The Castle, which switches off above the right bank of the Precious Brook at an altitude of approximately 400 metres. Since 1972 the site has been protected as a cultural monument and represents an interesting example of medieval fortifications in Domažlick.

The settlement of Osvračína with feudal character dates back to the end of the 13th century, when the owner of Zdislav z Osvračína is mentioned here in 1289. The castle was built later. According to archaeological findings, only a short period of time was inhabited at the beginning of the 15th century, and during that period a number of nobles had a minor status. The last mention of the functional castle dates back to 1474, when Půta Švihovský z Rýzmberka bought an Oscračín estate, but the castle was already described as desolate at that time. He died as a result of the fire and his masonry was deliberately torn down, believed to be in 1422 or 1431, in connection with the Hussite siege of nearby Horshov Týn.

The castle had characteristics. The entrance led from the east. A narrow foothold followed the passage through the trench of the neck, from which the rear of the Nарoje was running a wall around the trench, which surrounded its own castle core. The core formed a hill with a top platform without visible traces of structures on the surface. The 19th century descriptions indicated the existence of a tower, small buildings and cellars, but the archaeological research from 1997- 1998 provided a more precise picture. These proved to be the so-called closed castle where the buildings are covered by a collapsed wall. At the bottom of the hill there was a square two-space palace up to the height of the first floor. Around the castle core was led by a park from which a fragment of its southeast Nарoje was preserved.

Today there is an island with the remains of the castle freely accessible from the way that leads around the football field. Visitors can explore the remains of the medieval building and learn about the architecture Osvračína, which was discovered by archaeological research from 1997- 1998.

The ruins of Osvračín castle are located on the eastern edge of the village of the same name in the Domažlice district. The castle stood on the summit of a promontory called Na Zámku. It rises above the right bank of the Dravý stream at an altitude of approximately four hundred meters. Since nineteen seventy-two, the ruins have been protected as a cultural monument.

A manor residence was already standing in Osvračín at the end of the thirteenth century. In twelve eighty-nine, its owner Zdislav z Osvračína is mentioned. Archaeological finds, however, show that the castle itself was built later. It was inhabited only briefly, at the beginning of the fifteenth century. At that time, a number of minor nobles held it in succession.

The castle was destroyed by fire. The damaged masonry was then deliberately torn down, probably in fourteen twenty-two or fourteen thirty-one. At that time, the Hussites were besieging the nearby Horšovský Týn. When in fourteen seventy-four Půta Švihovský z Rýzmberka purchased the Osvračín estate, the castle is already listed as desolate.

Access to the castle was from the east. Behind the neck moat lay a narrow outer bailey. From both its rear corners, a rampart protruded, which encircled a ditch around the castle core. The core consists of a hillock with a summit plateau, on which today there are no traces of buildings.

Descriptions from the nineteenth century nevertheless mention a tower, a small building, and a cellar. Archaeological excavation in nineteen ninety-seven to nineteen ninety-eight explained this mystery. Osvračín is a so-called closed castle, whose buildings were covered by collapsed masonry. Inside the hillock lies a rectangular palace with two chambers, preserved up to the height of the first floor. A palisade wall ran around the core. From its rampart, only a piece of the southeastern corner remains.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit the ruins of Castle Osvračín is early in the morning or during the late afternoon when the sun creates an ideal atmosphere for discovering the remains of the medieval island and gives the landscape around the Precious Brook a unique character. You can use your own car and public transport for transport, and you can best verify the specific and up-to-date connection in the online connection search engine; The car can be parked in the village Osvračín and the castle itself can be reached by short walking. Take with you fixed shoes suitable for uneven terrain ruin, drinking water and in case of humidifying weather also waterproof clothes, because the terrain at the top of the island castle can slide. Photography offers the best footage from the angle where you capture the relics of the masonry along with the meanders and shores of the Precious Creek, while the best light for the atmosphere of the old manor resides during the golden watch before sunset. In the wider area within 30 minutes of the trip you can visit the nearby Horšovský Týn with its rich history and monuments, which will perfectly complement your trip to Pilsen Region. For families with children, this location is suitable as a simple trip to nature, connecting light tourism and discovering mysterious remains of the castle from the end of the thirteenth century, but it is necessary to keep the children under constant supervision due to unstable remains of the masonry and steep slopes of the island.

For kids

Imagine going back to when Castle Osvračín was the highest point in these northern Bohemia. It was when the castle guarded important roads and controlled the trade between cities.

It's like people from the past came back to tell you that the castle stood like a big rock on a hill. He had four towers and was known for his defence skills. One had to be very strong to avoid the castle.

And as for the people who lived here? They were people who dealt with agriculture, livestock and trade. They liked music and dancing, and they often met in the square to enjoy life.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring in Osvračín awakens a ruin into a new life, when the surrounding landscape in Chodsko is still awakening and the trees still do not have a full leafy veil, providing a great view of the remains of the masonry. The lighting is usually fine, often accompanied by spring showers, which deliver dramatic moist texture to old stones. From the point of view of practical advice it is necessary to count on the brown terrain in the surrounding area, so wear fixed waterproof shoes. You can easily avoid crowds of tourists during this period because the traffic here is low, and the best time to visit is in the morning when the morning herpes leaves the valley.

Summer brings to Osvračína lush vegetation, which partially grows into the perimeter walls and creates a romantic wild atmosphere. At noon, sunlight penetrates the trees and creates interesting shadows of light on the earth, but because of dense vegetation, it is harder to see into some corners of the monument. In the main summer season I recommend arriving early in the morning or in the late afternoon in order to escape the biggest heat. Choose light, breathable clothes, but do not forget long pants for ubiquitous nettles and tick repellent.

Autumn turns the ruin into a painting canvas full of yellow, red and brown shades of decaying leaves. The low sun creates suitable lighting conditions for photography throughout the day, as the rays penetrate through empty window holes and missing ceilings. Due to the often fallen leaves, the ground may be slippery, so take care when moving on unstable stones. It is suitable for layered clothing and wind-proof jacket, as the autumn wind can blow unpleasantly in the elevated ruins.

Winter gives Osvračín a warm and quiet atmosphere, underscored by a snow blanket covering the surrounding field and wall remains. The lighting is very short, while the low sun casts long shadows and soon in the afternoon there is a shadow. Few people come here this time of year, so you will enjoy complete peace, but access routes can be unprepared and icy. The need is warm winter clothes, hats, gloves and solid winter shoes with anti-slip soles, the best time for a tour is around noon when the best chance is at least a partial brightening of the sky.
