Radnice v Mělníku is a historically protected complex of three historic buildings in Peace Square. Its core is the speed of the 14th century. The city bought the building in 1449. The construction represents an important document of administrative development and has absorbed elements of Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Classicism and modern architecture throughout the centuries.

The oldest part of the complex is the original spruce, in which the chapel of St. Barbara and St. Jacob used to dwell. The first speedster is documented in the sources in 1311. The city itself is mentioned for the first time in the list of King Premysl Otakar II of 25 November 1274. Between 1429 and 1437, Mikuláš of Tujánka, the highest marshal of Queen Sophie of Bavaria, owned fast. After a 30-year war, during which the Swedish and Saxon armies occupied the City Hall and plundered the city archive, the city administration settled under the supervision of the representative of the Czech queen.

The architectural form of the town hall is the result of many reconstructions. Before the year 1558, there was extensive Renaissance adjustment involving the extension of the bay and the design of the facade. The fires of 1592 and 1765 followed further repairs and the Baroque form was completed in 1793. From 1939 to 1941, architect Josef Šebek did a major modernization. He connected three separate objects, created an inner courtyard with a fountain and modified the interiors for the needs of the office. Today's exterior features a tower with a needle roof, baroque shields and Gothic arches. The entrance mazhaus and the first floor kept their arches. On the floor there is also a torso Gothic chapel with fresco from the 17th century.

Historical attractions include an outdoor wall near the entrance portal. It still shows historical measurements, Viennese and Prague elbow, which were used in the markets. In 1887, a memorial document was inserted into the town hall, with a message to future generations, by the City Secretary František Tříska. In 1949 a three-part relief from Alois Kroupa was installed in the entrance. It depicts scenes from Czech history, such as the Princess Emma in the mint or St. Wenceslas in the vineyard. The important moment for modern history was October 28, 1918, when Mayor Josef Valina from the town hall balcony announced the creation of the Czechoslovak state.

The City Hall building also serves as a seat of the City Office. For visitors, it represents a valuable set of architectural styles that document the transformation of the city administration from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. The tour of this place offers an opportunity to look into the history of Mělník administration and to see preserved details that have survived centuries of building modifications and war events.

Welcome to one of the most interesting places Mělníka! Under your feet lies the central square of Peace, and before you stands the historic town hall, which is like a book full of stories. This complex of three buildings will invite you to travel through time if you look at the original speed of the 14th century that the city bought and turned into City Hall in 1449.

Look up at the facade! You see how architecture tells the story of transformations from Gothic through baroque adjustments to modern originals. This complex is the result of many years of effort and artistic spirit, especially extensive modifications from 1939-1941 under the guidance of Josef Šebek.

Now let's focus on the oldest part. Previously, the chapel of St. Barbara and St. James was based here, which gives this place even more historical importance. Note the historical peace on the outside wall of the portal - Vienna and Prague elbow. These characters are witnesses to the past and served as a standard of measurement.

The key story associated with this town hall is the merit of František Trysk, who has been involved in its development over the years. His efforts and many others allowed this complex to become an icon of Mělníka.

The commemorative charter from 1887, which was inserted into the city hall, is also interesting. This Charter carries a message for future generations and recalls the importance of preserving history.

Let's take a closer look at the details that surprise you with your art. Architects like Dobroslav Klusáček and Kamil Hilbert have left their trail in the forms and lines you can see.

Now that you've been immersed in the history and architecture of this place, we invite you to continue your research. Mělník has many other hidden pearls waiting to be discovered. Thank you for your visit and we hope you enjoyed it!

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is in the morning on working days when Peace Square is quieter and the light falling on the historical facade of the Town Hall is ideal for taking quality pictures without a large number of people in the shot.

You can easily reach the centre of Mělníka by car or public transport.

For the tour of the historical core we recommend comfortable shoes suitable for paving cubes. Don't forget to take the camera because the city hall architecture and adjacent buildings offer many details to capture.

In the immediate vicinity of the town hall you can visit the picturesque historical center of the city, the Mělník castle with a rich history or walk to the view of the confluence of the Elbe and Vltava rivers, which are places you should not miss.

For families with children, visiting the square is a pleasant walk. The historical environment offers plenty of space for movement and in the surrounding area you will find places to relax, with close castle and river confluence being an interesting destination for children.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring: In the spring, the town hall is shrouded in fine light and the surrounding gardens are starting to bloom again. The atmosphere is fresh and hopeful when nature wakes up. It is advisable for visitors to wear layered clothing, because the wounds can still be cold while the afternoon is warmer. In this period the crowds are not as big as later, so I recommend visiting the morning when everything is quiet and clean.

Summer: The summer months bring bright sun and lively tourism to the city. City Hall building is shining in a sharp midday light and the neighborhood is full of people. Because of the great crowds, it is best to arrive immediately after opening so that you enjoy the tour in peace. Dress lightly and do not forget drinking and sun protection. The best time to observe the details of architecture is an early evening when light is softer.

Autumn: Autumn in Mělník offers wonderful gold colors and often morning fog, which provide a memorable mysterious touch. The atmosphere is calm and a little melancholy. It's good to have a warmer jacket with you, because the air is cooling fast. There are fewer tourists at this time, which allows us to perceive history without any unnecessary rush. The ideal is a visit in the afternoon, when the leaf colours most excel.

Winter: Zimą days are running out and the town hall is very cozy and noble in the dark. The atmosphere is quiet and calm, which is ideal for those looking for contemplation. It is necessary to prepare for the frost and wear very warm clothes. In the Advent period, the city can be even more charming thanks to bright lights.
