Socha svatého Prokopa (Police nad Metují) Statue

Statue of St. Prokop in Police over Metátije in the district The entrance is a good example of the late Baroque sandstone sculpture in eastern Bohemia. The building from the beginning of the 18th century is located in Kostelní Street and since 1958 it is protected as a cultural monument.

It is assumed that the statue was created around 1706 in the workshop of co-workers Jan Brokoff. This group formed the statue of the Virgin Mary at the Broum Square during the period. In 1746 he donated the work to the Polish municipality of the Bojnov-broum Abbot Benno Löbl.

From the point of view of art, it is a sandstone figure in a slightly sloped position. The center of gravity lies on the left leg while the right leg is forward. The saint has a master on his head and is dressed in a pelerine with a rich mascara. The whole object stands on a massive three-piece plinth with an elevated central segment. In its part there is a niche ended with a mussel lunette. The statue is today supplemented by a stone balustrade, which originally served as a railing of a bridge above the gutter from the submonastery mill.

Historically, the statue was not in the present place, but in front of the city mill in Nádražní Street. It was transported to the Church Street in 1857. In the local context, the counterpart is the statue of St. John Nepomuk.

Over the years, the monument has passed through two restaurants. The first was carried out in 1871 by the police benefactor Augustine Kejdana. The second was held in 1997 in the studio of the academic sculptor Antonín Wagner in Dvořa Králové nad Labem. Currently, the statue lacks a cross that the saint originally held in his hand.

The monument is written in the catalogue of the National Heritage Institute under register number SZP 31965 / 6- 1851. Thanks to its artistic value and its connection with Jan Brokoff, it represents an important point for everyone interested in Baroque art in the region. The visit to this building offers direct insight into the sculpture tradition of eastern Bohemia.
