Tepelský dům, located on Armory Street in the historical heart of Pilsen, is the oldest townhouse in the city with preserved basement space and a 13th century cross-vaults. Since 25 October 1963 it has been protected as a cultural monument. This house represents an important part of Pilsen's history and architecture, which was reflected in several building phases from Gothic to neo-Renaissance.

Founded at the end of the 13th century when Pilsen evolved as a royal city, Tepelský dům has unique early Gothic basement spaces with a cross vault. The oldest written mention of the house dates back to 1407 when it was sold by Jakub Tarantle. In the following years, it appeared as property of various owners, including Foolah Tarantle and Andrlik from Nýrsko.

The Tepelský dům has undergone several transformations. After the fire around 1542 the house was added a late nigotic element, which alternates with baroque modifications in the early 18th century and subsequently with classical changes. The most significant transformation occurred in 1884, when the facade of the house was given a neo-Renaissance form by architect Emanuel Klotz. The house has a saddle roof with two floors and a valb roof on the east wing, which is part of the original city fortification. The facade has eight window axes with risalite and profiled belt brass.

House ownership has often changed over the years. Since 1501 it belonged to the thermal monastery, which held it until the Josephine reforms in 1788. After these reforms, the house was sold to Václav and Anna Samrová, who became its owners until now. Between 1850 and 1856 the house had its headquarters and was then adapted for residential purposes.

Tepelský dům also has an interesting history associated with personalities and events. The painter Marie Usytil-Kucherová spent her childhood in this house, which affected her creative journey. The house is also depicted in historical paintings, such as the Portable Image with v Václav and Willenberg Vedut Pilsen.

Today the Tepelský dům is not only a cultural monument, but also a place where there is a cafe and drugstore. Its historical meanings and architectural changes make it an interesting destination for visitors to Pilsen. It is important to remember that such monuments not only capture the past, but also contribute to the cultural wealth and identity of the city. Tepelský dům is worth a visit to anyone interested in the history and architecture of the Czech Republic.

Welcome! You're standing in front of one of the oldest buildings in Pilsen, the Tepel House. Notice the elegant facade on Armory Street which invites you to explore its history and beauty.

This house has its roots dating back to the 13th century and is the oldest townhouse in Pilsen with a preserved basement space and a vault of the cross type. Its history begins at a time when the first inhabitants were here, making it an important place in the emerging urban life. The oldest written mention of the house dates back to 1407 when it was sold by Jakub Tarantle.

Look up at the vault and notice its unique shape. This architectural feature is an example of the skills of builders from this era who have been able to create such a structure without modern technology.

Although we do not know the names of architects or key personalities associated with its construction, it is clear that Tepelský dům was a place full of life and events. After the fire around 1542, there were changes in its structure, reflecting the historical changes faced by the region.

The interesting thing is that since 25 October 1963 the house has been protected as a cultural monument. This status highlights its importance and the need to preserve this historic treasure for future generations.

Let us move on to other parts of the city, as Pilsen offers many other attractions. I hope this guide inspired you to explore more historical sites and gain a deeper understanding of their history.

Thank you for your visit to the Tepel House. I hope you enjoyed your stay here and bring benefits from this historic adventure!

When visiting, it is recommended to take the camera or mobile phone with you to capture the beautiful architecture of the house. The best light is in the early afternoon, when the sun illuminates the interiors and from the outside are colored roofs in full gloss.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring: At this time Tepelský dům appears in a new light, when the sun illuminates its facade with long shadows and a golden shiny beam. Flowers in the surrounding gardens are blooming, thus inhaling freshness and moodiness into the atmosphere. Exploring the house is suitable with light clothes because temperatures are rising. The best time to explore will be the afternoon when the sun is no longer too hot and you can enjoy a quiet moment in the garden.

Summer: For years, Tepelský dům is surrounded by living greenery, when the trees take on their fullest colours and the surrounding landscape is revived by nature. The sun illuminates the whole object in its full glory, but it can also be a source of discomfort. We recommend visiting the house in the early morning or in the evening when the temperature is milder and the sun rays are less intense. Remember the sun protection - short gloves and hat could be useful.

Autumn: This season, Tepelský dům appears in a beautiful shade of gold and red colors. Leaves falling from trees give the atmosphere a romantic mood, which is ideal for a peaceful tour. The temperature is gradually decreasing, so suitable clothing should include helmets and warmer cap. The best time to visit is at noon, when the sun is still strong enough to illuminate the object.

Winter: Winter atmosphere around the Tepel House offers its unique view. The snow blanket can add a romantic mood and the sun rays reflect on the snowy roofs, creating a beautiful contrast with historical architectural elements. Visit the house in the time of daylight when the sun illuminates the object and its surroundings in the best colors. It is advisable to wear warm clothes such as leather and hats to avoid cold.
