Thomayerovy sady Park

Thomayerovy Sady is a public park in Prague's Libeň district, covering 4.25 hectares. Established at the start of the 20th century by František Thomayer, a renowned Czech landscape architect, it is notable for its historical significance and natural beauty. The park features landmarks like Bílá skála and offers insights into Prague's cultural evolution.

The origins of Thomayerovy Sady date back to a site that once housed a castle belonging to the Rotlev family until 1437. Ownership changed significantly over time; by 1662, Staré Město acquired it as a summer residence for Prague's mayors, serving this purpose until the mid-19th century. Following Libeň’s acquisition of city status in 1898, the area became a public municipal park. This transformation was led by František Thomayer at the dawn of the 20th century, marking a pivotal moment in its history.

Architecturally significant for its integration with nature and thoughtful design elements introduced by František Thomayer, the park expanded between 1935 and 1938 to include northern and western sections. Architectural features such as the Libeňka well and a spring dedicated to Saint Vojtěch highlight the blend of natural and human-made elements.

Ownership and administration have shifted dramatically over centuries. Initially under the Rotlev family until 1437, it later became part of Staré Město in 1662, serving as a summer retreat for mayors. The transition to a public park began with Libeň's city status and was realized through Thomayer’s vision at the start of the 20th century.

In December 2008, plans were announced to designate part of the park as a specially protected territory due to unique flora and fauna, such as orsej jarní and snědek přímolistý, alongside various amphibians.

Today, Thomayerovy Sady remains an accessible and cherished green space in Prague. It connects with the main cycling route A2 between Troja and Libeňský ostrov, making it easily reachable for both locals and tourists. The park's historical layers, combined with its natural beauty and educational opportunities like the Školní naučná stezka, make it a worthwhile visit.
