The Velvarská Gate is the only preserved gate in Slaný. It belonged to the former medieval fortifications of the city and stands several dozen meters north of the historic Masaryk Square.
It is not known exactly when it was built. The first written records of it date from 1443. A relief inscription beneath a window on the second floor of the southern façade tells us about the tower's origins. It reminds us that it was built under Aleš Krejčí and Václav Novinka, long-serving Slaný councilmen.
During the reign of George of Poděbrady, the gate was repaired and given the designation New Gate. From that time, the year 1461 has been preserved on its southern wall. Originally, it also had accompanying ramparts with crenellations, a bastion, and a bridge over the moat.
