Vřeskovice Fortress

Although it may seem today at first sight that this place belongs primarily to the quiet landscape and the calm of the surrounding fields, believe me, you can feel the weight of centuries under your feet and in the air itself. Now that you have headphones, let me take you on a journey through time to guide you through the history of this place, from its ascension to its silent decline.

Look around you. You may not see tall walls or massive gates that would immediately bend you in their size, but pay attention to the place itself. Feel the atmosphere of this space. Even though this fort is now known as extinct, its presence is still felt in the very shape of the terrain and in the way time stops. As a cultural monument protected by the law today, this place is not just an empty area, but proof of human efforts to build a home, a safe haven and a symbol of power.

To understand why this place was created, we have to go back deep into the early 14th century. Imagine a time when power in these countries was built through lineage and fixed mansions. It was at that time that one of the branches of the mighty Drslavic family laid the foundations to secure their name in the future. This fortress was not just an ordinary house, but a mansion to represent the stability and influence of the lineage in this part of the region. The first person whose name shines brightest in the history of this place was Ota z Vřeskovic. It appears in the period records with an addition from Biřkov, which tells us about its broader ties and significance. He and his family relatives here created a world that was governed by tradition, duties and constant efforts to maintain a family name.

Now pay attention to how the fate of this place changed over the next decades and centuries. History is not linear and does not always change smoothly. The fortress Vřeskovice was often at the center of noble disputes and political movements. In 1409, Racko z Vřeskovic appears in our chronicles, which was the first clearly mentioned holder of this mansion. His name is firmly linked to this soil. Later, in the mid-fifteenth century, between 1455 and 1462, there was a major break. The object was definitely taken into the hands of the lords of Roupov. This transition could mean a change in the perception of the place, a change in its administration, and in the people who lived here in the corridors and the yards.

If you look at the surroundings now, try to imagine all the characters that once lived here, ruled or simply sought safety here. The names we read today in the ancient papers are not just a dry list of personalities, but the stories of people like Zdebor Bílý z Vřeskovic, Bušek z Vřeskovic or Přibík z Vřeskovic. Each of these names represented a specific fate, ambition, and effort to preserve the family property. Sezema z Borov or Bohuslav Hrubec ze Schonangru also moved in these places. Even though their specific daily lives are now hidden beneath the layers of earth and time, their presence here is still perceptible. Let us not forget names such as Jan z Vřeskovic, Otík z Vřeskovic or women's names which often remain in the background in history, but which were the very heart of this mansion, such as Kunka.

Let us now move on to one of the most important and yet most tragic chapters in the history of this place. Every big thing has its end and the fortress Vřeskovice had its own slow and sad pace. After centuries of working as a seat and center of power, the process of its decline began. In 1573, an event appears in the documents, which essentially closes one era. Jan Jr. of Roupov sold this estate and it is during this period that the fort is officially declared desolate for the first time. The word, desolate, carries a great melancholy. It means that the place that once lived through noble disputes, family celebrations and daily ruckus has become empty. It became an abandoned space that was no longer meant to protect anyone and served no one with prestige.

Why did the place that was so important to the families like Drslavic or Roupovci eventually give up its glory and be swallowed up in time? Was it an economic decision, a change in political ties, or perhaps the simple fatigue of the constant disputes surrounding this place? This mystery remains in the silence of the surrounding fields. Sometimes it is said that every ruin or lost place retains its mysterious energy, as if the echoes of the old debates and decisions were still in it.
